To not cook pancakes for breakfast?

My 7 year old was nearly in tears that mum isn't doing pancakes for breakfast on pancake Day. Am I a selfish cow? (They can have them tomorrow night....tonight is parents evening, swimming, and fitness class). Unless Dad will cook them for the kids later on.....

We'll have them after school. One child doesn't eat them and I CBA making different breakfasts to order.

Ohyesiam · 05/03/2019 07:44

For breakfast? Jeez, that’s a fresh hell for me. I’ll do them tonight, but wouldn’t even consider doing it for breakfast.

YABU

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/03/2019 07:47

YANBU to say you can't do them for breakfast, but saying you will make them another day is a bit crap. Pancake day is today. They must be eating something this evening - why not have pancakes for dessert? Takes 5 minutes.

unfortunateevents · 05/03/2019 07:50

Why wouldn't you have them for breakfast? Or otherwise, even if you have all these activities this evening, you have to eat in the middle of it all anyway - or is everyone going hungry? They are really simple to do so anything else you eat is going to take at least as long. And yes, when you're seven it's important to be able to join in - all her friends will be talking about how many pancakes they ate and no-one wants to hear how many your DD will eat tomorrow instead!

No, we won't have your birthday Cake today, you can blow out the candles tomorrow.

Nah, you easter egg hunt? Has to wait until Monday.

Sorry love, you have to wait until boxing day evening to open your presents

Oh, it's world book Day on Monday? To can go dressed as Peter Pan on Tuesday....

EarlyBird39 · 05/03/2019 07:51

I woke up earlier today and made a big pile of pancakes before leaving to catch the train to work so the kids would have them for breakfast. I hope they'll enjoy it, They'd be very disappointed if there were no pancakes as we made it a tradition over the last few years...and I don't have the guts to make them sad over a few pancakes... so happy kids, happy mummy ❤️❤️

Fakeflowersandlemonade · 05/03/2019 07:51

Dp has got out of bed after 2 hours sleep to make our dc pancakes (I am a hopeless cook) it's one day a year op, make them pancakes

OopsUpsideYourBed · 05/03/2019 07:55

If you have time to go on Mumsnet, surely you have time to make pancakes.

I made a batch this morning and it only took 10 mins, max.

Pinkbells · 05/03/2019 07:56

Make them super quick now, they really take minutes!

DocusDiplo · 05/03/2019 07:56

Mine asked for them for breakfast. I said no. Bit of a fuss but meh. We will have them tonight for pudding.

Slowknitter · 05/03/2019 07:57

YANBU, but I'd find a way to squeeze them in for dinner - presumably everyone needs to eat at some point anyway, regardless of activities.

trancepants · 05/03/2019 07:57

I got a pack of American style pancakes for this morning. Served up with lots of fruit and Greek yogurt. Essentially 0 effort and while not the healthiest breakfast I’ve ever served, a few pancakes on a special occasion aren’t going to hurt.

Days like pancake day are massively important to little kids. They feel a bit meh to adults but they honestly are a really, really big deal when you are seven.

labazsisgoingmad · 05/03/2019 07:58

rather have porridge for breakfast and we always had traditional pancakes with sugar and lemon for pudding with our evening meal thats when i shall be making mine -cant wait yummy-

AgentJohnson · 05/03/2019 08:00

It’s one day and the batter takes 1 minute to make.

CouldntThink · 05/03/2019 08:00

I make them for pudding later. But we tend to have th me ready made ones in the house anyway as the DC love them.

TheSmallAssassin · 05/03/2019 08:00

Shrove Tuesday pancakes are for pudding, not for breakfast. We've always had them after tea. With lemon and sugar, obv.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 05/03/2019 08:01

Normally I'd agree with you but as you aren't even having them tonight then I think YAB(a bit)U.

TheSmallAssassin · 05/03/2019 08:02

And they don't take minutes if you want to have all the fun of making them together and having a go tossing them, which is half the fun, isn't it?

dementedpixie · 05/03/2019 08:04

I made scotch pancakes this morning. The kitchen is a mess but ds loves them and it's a bit of a tradition

Lavellan · 05/03/2019 08:04

You can't even enjoy it properly if you're rushing in the morning. We always had pancakes for dinner at some point in the week near pancake day and we were fine. They take too long coming out of the pan one at a time, and you can properly go in on the toppings and feast.

CalmdownJanet · 05/03/2019 08:04

Surely their dad will just make them later? Once they have them at some stage it's fine.

They'll be for dinner here.

Do they get them in school?

CardsforKittens · 05/03/2019 08:10

The recipe is easy and the batter is quick to make, but I find that cooking a stack of pancakes takes more time than I have in the morning. We always have them in the evening. In you situation OP perhaps you could make some for dessert just before bedtime? Or is there simply no time at all tonight?

NotSorry · 05/03/2019 08:10

YANBU OP - I’m not sure i’ll bother at all, but if I do, it’ll be tonight

AppleKatie · 05/03/2019 08:11

The hyperbole on here! Poor kids because there’s no pancakes for breakfast? Er what?

It’s pancake day not pancakes the second you get out of bed day.

We’re having them for lunch because that’s when it’s convenient for me (and DS will be at home).

Never occurred to me I was being a bitch by not foregoing my morning cup of tea on the sofa to run round the kitchen instead.

Also who wants ice cream, choc sauce and sprinkles for breakfast?
