To think being slim should be normal for most people.

By slim i mean sizes 8 to 12.

Obviously you get a minority who are not in this range naturally but for 80% of people this size should be natural, say they eat a reasonable diet of between 2000-3000 calories.

Im so sick of people at work making out i am abnormally thin for being a size 10. I watch what I eat but dont deprive myself. The same people making me out to be lucky to be slim eat fried chicken or pizza for lunch and seem to be able to demolish a whole pack of biscuits at 3 o clock.

Aibu to think that the normal human man/woman should be a size 8-12 and that to attain or maintain this does not require super human discipline or strength.

I used to get abused in the street for my weight. People are worth more than a number on a scale.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 03/03/2019 20:03

What a spiteful post .

I am a size 10 as well , but I , unlike you, am not nasty with it .

Some people are overweight due to medication .

TalkinPaece · 03/03/2019 20:03

If we deny it
its not real

Cantusethatname · 03/03/2019 20:03

It's not just TV though, look at old photographs of people. Not famous people, people in your family. People were slimmer.
My mum was a size 14 all through my 1970's childhood. I buy a 10 or a 12 now but I have a few old skirts of hers and the waist doesn't do up round me. I am bigger than she was but my clothes say smaller.

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 20:05

HelenaDove. Yes they should be so the OP is entitled to be annoyed at her colleagues constantly commenting on her weight/size and remarking she is ‘abnormal’ in some way for being skinny when the reality is that she is within what the NHS would consider a healthy range.

That’s the point the OP was making, that we’ve become so overweight as a nation that the ‘normal’ has shifted far outside of what is healthy.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/03/2019 20:06

"Since I hit a certain age, I have to work out at least 5 times a week to stay in my size ten jeans."

Out of interest, do you mean the menopause or another 'certain age'?

chewbacca83 · 03/03/2019 20:08

Why do you have a mutlipack of wotsits and Jaffa cakes in your bedside cabinet?!

Bedsidedrawer · 03/03/2019 20:09

Ah one of my favourite type of threads. I make popcorn, get comfy and laugh at the utter bullshit that gets shat out. Some of my absolute favourite stock phrases are as follows -

I know someone who is a size 10 but overweight
We have lost sight of what obese looks like
I am a size 8 but clinically obese
If you are under 6 ft and anything over a size 6 you are fat

It's fucking brilliant. Never fails to cheer me up. Had the right old hump today as well. Golden!

Samind · 03/03/2019 20:09

I agree people are worth more than a number. I have a healthy BMI an have stretch marks and arse dimples and cellulite. It doesn't matter a thing to me what other people look like. It's how you deal with it is the main thing. We cannot take on the world!!! The schools, local governments etc are constantly changing their ways of doing things to keep and make children healthy. It's a massive effort on a huge scale. You can only do so much got yourself and your family. Why worry about other people. Size should not come into it!

Choccywoccyhooha · 03/03/2019 20:09

You eat 3000 calories a day and are a size 10, OP?

There can only be three explanations for this:
You have been genetically gifted an over-active metabolism (lucky you, but nothing to be smug about).
You are 7ft 2, (see above).
You are a professional athlete who has time to exercise all day because that is your job.

I eat half the calories you eat, am 5'7" and bigger than a 12. But that's okay, because I'm not a judgey dick.

motherheroic · 03/03/2019 20:10

Some women wear larger sizes due to muscle but they are still slim. Did you account for that in your little sizing requirements?

PrtScn · 03/03/2019 20:10

I was a size 12 then had a baby. I can’t fit into any of my size 12 jeans anymore. One pair I can’t even get over my hips!
I just need to look at a chip now and I put on a stone.

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 20:12

Choccy. Not as unusual as you might think. The average women needs around 2,000 calories a day to maintain their weight. Add in a decent HIIT class or a trip to the gym plus walking and you can easily add on 1,000 calories as a maintenance.

Seline · 03/03/2019 20:12

I agree OP but people get offended by this for some reason.

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 03/03/2019 20:13

@chewbacca83

Why do you have a mutlipack of wotsits and Jaffa cakes in your bedside cabinet

Because I'm disabled and sometimes I'm completely bedridden. I have to keep non-perishable food in the cupboard next to my bed for times like this when I literally can't stand up. It has to be food that doesn't upset my bowel condition so that I won't need to use the toilet in a hurry.

HTH.

Cherrysherbet · 03/03/2019 20:15

Trying to be / stay slim is a bloody mine field these days.

Everywhere you go there are eating opportunities.

Society, big business and the media have a lot to answer for.
I agree that we have lost our way with what is a ‘normal’ amount to eat. Snacking has become a way of life.

I’m a size 14, and have a very physical job, but I eat too much.
I would find being a size 12 very hard to maintain, and it would make me miserable.

I am always on and off of diets, and it’s so difficult.

I disagree with you that it doesn’t require super human discipline or strength. For so many, including me, it does.

You have absolutely no idea of how being overweight, or struggling with food addiction feels. You really should be more understanding.

BlimeyCalmDown · 03/03/2019 20:15

As a tall person (5ft 8.5" and lots of us are tall) it really annoys me when people say we should be btw an 8-12. In my younger years when really good at dieting I was a 10 and was really really skinny, ppl asking if I had a disorder. I'm now a 12-14 and a BMI of 23.5 which is well within the healthy weight range. OP if you have to do goady posts then at least don't be height-ist! My height isn't unusual.

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 20:17

Stopmakingafooloutofme. Sorry to hear that.

Have you thought about what other alternatives you could have instead? Wotsits and Jaffa cakes have very low nutritional value and won’t fill you up so you end up eating more to account for that. You might be better to try nuts or protein bars which may have more calories but will keep you full for longer if you could tolerate those?

Gwenhwyfar · 03/03/2019 20:17

"They only employed slim actors in the 1970s, same as now confused."

Plenty of fat actors on soap operas. I think actors in general are still thinner than the population as a whole, but you can see a difference on TV through the ages just as you can in real life. You can look at documentaries and the news and so on. Look at videos of choirs online comparing the 80s and now and you see how the average size has got bigger.

In any case, the fact that we've got bigger isn't under dispute.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 03/03/2019 20:17

Sorry but i agree with the OP. If the post was reversed and she was overweight with slim colleagues commenting on her weight there would be outrage.
I'm 43 and when I went to primary school there were maybe 1 or 2 overweight kids in each year. Taking my some to school, the overweight are in the majority. This is not judging or sneering but a fact. We have lost sight of what a healthy weight is because we don't want to offend anyone but the next generation are going to suffer healthwise. Yes you can give examples of the size 20 person who's exceptionally fit or the size 8 person with diabetes, but as a rule of thumb , carrying extra weight causes health issues.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 03/03/2019 20:19

I eat under 1000 cals 5 days a week, a bit more at the weekend. I'm fat. Not disabled or anything just fat.

And I've been for years and years and been called fat even before I actually was. It started at about 10 or 11 I think?

My only regret is that i spent so many years thinking I was fat and worrying about and crying about it when I fucking wasn't. Funnily enough at size 18 I'm more ok with who I am. I'm trying to do something about it but that's mainly because I think it might help my back ache.

Seline · 03/03/2019 20:20

Trying to be / stay slim is a bloody mine field these days.

Is it? Why? I don't understand why some people are so obsessed with food these days.

JaceLancs · 03/03/2019 20:20

1500 calories a day is a maintenance amount for me any more and I would gain weight
I am currently dieting so probably eat around 1200 calories which gives me small losses

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 03/03/2019 20:20

Thanks Dorset. Unfortunately nuts are a no-go. I've tried some of the meal replacement bars, but it's a bit of a minefield. I'm OK with one brand of strawberry flavour but I have none left at the moment. I can't have anything like flapjacks, cereals etc so it's usually just crisps/crackers/chocolate and dried noodles. Anything to keep me going but unfortunately severely impacts my weight. I'd rather be fat than flare up my stomach though.
