8.10/8.15(latest) leave house
8.20/8.25 drop DC to school/Montessori
8.25 go to work
9.00-2.40 work (I’m a teacher so these are my contact/school hours)
2.40-3.00/3.10 sort out some planning/photocopying etc
3.00/3.10 leave work
3.30/3.40 collect DC
3.50/4.00 home
4.00-5.30/6.00 this is our free time so it varies depending on day or weather , take DD to swim lesson/gymnastics/etc or light the fire and stay home or go to the park/visit friend/family for an hour. And also make dinner
5.30/6.00 dinner time
6.00-6.30 DC play for half hour
6.30 bath/get ready for bed. Listen to DD read.
7.00-7.15 bedtime
7.15....get all bags and lunches (most of) ready for the next day, set out clothes and uniforms for the next day.

My DH Works away for weeks at a time so this is a day when he is away.

2-5 work stuff and odds and ends in the house.
5-7 relax, potter, make some food
7-10 relax some more
10 read or MN in bed for an hour
11 sleep
It’s a low stress life!

Honeypickle · 03/03/2019 22:50

@youngandfree - do you not shower/bath daily?! Wink

MegaBat · 03/03/2019 22:51

I work from home for myself.

I get up at 7.30am and do all my housework for the day (easy in 45 mins as I'm on top of it as do this every morning) Put a wash on. Empty dishwasher. Make sure my youngest is ready for school ( eldest at uni)

8.30 - drive him to school

8.45 - back home. Coffee. Work from my sofa in front of tv until 3pm ish

3 - pick up child. Ensure everything ready for next day such as fresh uniform and books all packed

Might do more work.

I now realise I'm a very slack boss GrinI have had full on jobs before but prefer working for myself

Arrive at work for 19:30, receive nursing handover and hit the floor at 20:00.

Do a four hour drugs round and set overnight pump feeds up. Settle everyone into bed and make sure they're comfortable.

Tidy up and have a cup of tea around 01:00. Check pump feeds hourly and keep a close eye on any poorly people. Do paperwork and charts.

Start checks and more drugs at 05:00. Deal with any issues like blocked catheters, people getting chesty, high temps, diarrhoea etc. Make a list of people who may need to see the nurse practitioner.

Complete handover sheets and give handover at 07:30. Finish at 08:00 then return home for bath and bed.

I love my job 🙂💕

@Honeypickle 😂😂 yes I bath in the evenings mostly, I don’t have time to shower in the morning when Dh is away so I bath and sort hair in the evening before bed. Then just brush it through and pin a section or two back...et viola 😂😂

@Youngandfree my mom was a teacher when I was growing up in the 1970's and her teaching week was very similar to yours at that time! I think things had started changing here by late 1980's when she took early retirement and just did agency work as that was less paperwork.

hippoherostandinghere · 03/03/2019 23:04

I work in the NHS in a clinic based post.

6.45am wake up, shower, prep lunches
7.10am give DC a 10min warning, dry and straighten my hair
7.20am DC get dressed and I do DDs hair
7.45am leave for breakfast club
8.15am arrive at work
8.30-4.50 work
5pm collect DC from my parents house
3 times a week collect DD from gymnastics
Take DS to football
Dinner, homework
8pm DD bed
8.45pm DS bed
Relax, prep for next day
11pm bed

I'm amazed how early some people have to get up.

PrismGuile · 03/03/2019 23:16

Why call it 'the Montessori' rather than nursery...a bit affected is it not?

I'm jealous of everyone getting home so early. I usually get back around 7.30pm and DP can be out until midnight

Youngandfree · 03/03/2019 23:21

@PrismGuile because it’s not a nursery, it caters for age 2.5 upwards to school starting age usually 4 or 5 here. They follow the Montessori method of self directed play etc. that’s why it’s a Montessori.

I’m resisting a strong urge to work out the average “waking time” from all of this info 🙈😂😂

bundesdelboy · 03/03/2019 23:33

What strikes me from all these posts are how run ragged everyone is on a"normal" day.

When did our workforce start to accept 7:30-8:30 start times and beyond 5pm as expected (plus evening work after children in bed) in normal/no manual jobs with (I'm guessing) salaried, contract hours ..?

I mean, many of the full-time workers here.. if you start at, say, 8am, run out of the office without a proper lunch break by 5.30pm to collect kids.. commute home... Dohours of work in the evening.. and this is normal, no unusual deadlines or unplanned event...

It's no wonder we have huge rates of family fractures, mental health issues, exhausted stressed employees!

When do you people working those ways get to enjoy exercise to stay healthy? Catch up with loved ones over a relaxed family dinner? Actually do DIY or volunteer to help a neighbor or go to a library or just LIVE a life? Or (shock horror) manage to get in a proper 8 hrs of sleep!!

When you add in those work commitments and commutes on top, I think we're all fucking doomed if we show today's children that this is normal work life!

siestakey · 03/03/2019 23:37

I'm looking for a new job atm so working part time from home for my partners business (he also works from home!)

My day atm is a lot less structured than it would be if I was going out to work each day- I have a job interview tomorrow though for a part time travel agency job so that's exciting. I also am studying online too for my degree.

8am wake up
Coffee, shower, have some breakfast around 9am

9-11am study

11-12 answer emails for my partner and schedule in calls with clients for him

12 lunch time ish

1-3 study again

Go out if I need to (usually pop into town for a walk or have a napGrin)

6 dinner

Evening I again just answer emails and keep on top of his calendar and schedule in more appointments/ reply to potential clients.

It varies each day, sometimes he has little to no emails so I'll study more. Some days he's super busy so I'll do more work and not go out/have a nap.

Kismetjayn · 03/03/2019 23:39

@bundesdelboy completely agree, but can't see it improving any time soon.

Youngandfree · 03/03/2019 23:42

@bundesdelboy I agree!! That is why I love my job!! The work/life balance is 👌 I still have time after school to actually go places, visit ppl, or just relax!

I would just like to come in and add that I would love all of your ‘hectic’ days!
I would love to be able to put my children to bed every night!
Emergency services here, and not one of your days look like mine, you wouldn’t believe me if I wrote it down, so there is no point me explaining my ‘normal’ day Wink

Lwmommy · 04/03/2019 00:04

Bundesdelboy, honestly its really sodding hard work. It is absolutely expected by exec team that we are always available. My boss is based in America and routinely books meeting for my evening time, including a few wonderful all day workshops via skype starting at 3pm running to 11pm.

He very clearly stated in a group meeting that he expected to be able to contact us at any time of day and week regardless of whether it was working hours and has called me while on leave on several occasions.

I had half term off recently, spent the day with DD and as soon as she was in bed, booted up.my.laptop and did at least 6 hrs work til the early hours.

Exercise - not really just at the weekend, swimming with DD or walks to the park.

Friends/family, again weekends but mainly that for seeing family havent been out with friends in months. See family once a month roughly as weekends also need to.include food shop, housework, general errands and some fun activities for DD

House - has a very long to do list, unfortunately fence has come down tonight so thats another thing we need to sort before the neighbours kick up a stink.

I never work while DD is awake and with me, thats her time, i just push it all into the evenings.

Youngandfree · 04/03/2019 09:13

@icouldwriteabook people like you in the job that you do are some of those that I truly am thankful for. Thank you 💕

I'm on Mat leave at the moment but will soon be going back to work part time and working day will look like this:

6.15am- alarm goes off. I get dressed, maybe have cup of tea and a slice of toast if there's time. Depends how long I ignore my alarm for.

7am- kids up, DH quickly gets DD(5) breakfast ready while I change baby then leaves for work. I feed baby while supervising DD(5) getting ready for school. Then I put my make up on and do my hair downstairs while watching DC.

7.45am- DM arrives and I leave for work. DM does school drop off and pick up (5 minute walk) and looks after baby on my working days. She is an angel.

8am- Arrive at work. If I'm lucky might have time for a quick cup of tea, read through my emails etc before the madness starts. Some days I get a lunch break, some days I don't.

4/4.15pm- Leave work.

4.30pm (depending on traffic)- get home. May go to the park, play in the garden, do some crafts with DD, depending on the weather. Read with DD and fill in reading book.

5.30pm- Give DD her Tea. I'll probably have a snack. Throw a load of washing on. Load/unload dishwasher.

6pm/6.30pm- Bath DD and baby together. PJ's on and then DD will do some colouring or watch some TV while I have a tidy up and get her uniform ready for next day.

7pm- DH arrives home. One of us will feed baby while the other puts DD to bed and reads her a story.

7.30pm- Both kids asleep. I have a shower and blow-dry my hair while DH cooks our tea. We eat together, talk about our day, maybe watch some TV. If I'm working the next day I'll get my clothes ready to save time in the morning.

10.30pm- Dream feed baby then I go to bed.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 04/03/2019 10:15

This is why I took a significant pay cut in order to have a shorter commute and work term time only. I was lucky to be able to do that though and for many it just isn't an option.

WhatHaveIFound · 04/03/2019 10:28

Self employed (home office) here so my day is something like this...

6.30am - Wake DC
7/7.30 - They set off to their respective schools
Coffee
8am - I'm normally at my computer
12-12.30pm Lunch.
Twice a week I take an hour off during the day to go to the gym.
Work until 5pm when DS arrives home
Normally i stop working then so the evening is taken up with cooking, homework supervision and relaxing.
If DH is away I generally work again after the DC have gone to their respective rooms at 8.30/9pm.
Bedtime around 11.30pm or midnight.

SallySynonym · 04/03/2019 10:40

Sometimes I think I’m doing life wrong – or maybe I just really need a new job.

My day is:

6.40am – up and dressed
7.20 – bus (check emails during commute)
8.10 (approx.) – arrive at work, breakfast at desk and usually manage to get through loads of work (mainly report drafting) before other people arrive and interruptions start from 9am.
9am-1pm – Mainly back-to back meetings. Odd half hours in between are used to catch up on emails, firefighting and helping my team members with problems.
1-2pm – lunch at desk while catching up on emails and voicemails. (once per week I block out this time and go to the gym)
2-5pm – more meetings punctuated by firefighting as above.
5-6.30pm – stay in office – some combination of catching up on the day’s emails and actions, preparing for the next day’s meetings, report drafting
6.30-7.10pm – bus home – (continuing to catch up on emails)
7-8pm – make and eat dinner
8pm - shower
8.30-10pm – usually continue writing reports while DH cleans/tidies
10-midnight – downtime & tv
Midnight – bed.

Two days per week, I leave work at 5.30pm and visit my dad in his nursing home. On those days I will be home by 8pm so dinner etc starts then, with less/no downtime after I’ve caught up with work. On occasions when work is not quite so full on, I’ll go to the gym or for a run after work. I’m only actually contracted 9-5pm so it’s quite sobering to see how much extra I give and yet still seem to be struggling with workload. I have no idea how I’d possibly manage if I had kids to add to the mix too.
