AIBU to think that if the police had back the powers to stop and search anyone ,and to arrest any persons with a knife ,our country would be a lot safer..
I know it's not quite as simple as that ,as we need more officers on the street to do so ,and more prisons to house people caught with a knife .giving them a lengthy Sentence as well.
But would it not be at least a start? And if it saved one person from dying it would be worth it..
Plus if you have nothing to hide, you won't mind the police stopping you ,as you will understand they are just doing their job..

Waterloo totally agree. This is a consequence of funding cuts. You could compare it to the increase in homelessness. If we want a society that is peaceful and works for all we need to pay for it.

Do you actually know you are racist or is it too intrenched?

I think it's all very well to say that you're a in favour of stop and search if you are white and middle class and know that the person who is going to be repeatedly stopped and searched for suspicious activities like being a black man walking down the road in a hoody isnt you, or your child.

Stop and search alone is not going to make anyone any safer. Its not as though this approach hasnt been applied previously. We know how to make a difference to young people's lives in deprived areas - good policing and parenting but also positive interventions, opportunities to get involved in sport or the arts, good educational opportunities (of all kinds). But it costs money so we stopped doing it - and here we are again.

Namechangedforgoodreason · 03/03/2019 11:12

Why is it that every thread about race brings out the bigots? I have noticed they start with .. well done if them are all right...then let all their bigotry out.

I guess at least you are obvious

Namechangedforgoodreason · 03/03/2019 11:13

I have knee and reported you... Again sos

anniehm · 03/03/2019 11:14

The problem is drugs. Not just the kind you think of but cheap cigarettes even bargain booze at the cornershop. Drugs mean gangs.

Bowchicawowow · 03/03/2019 11:14

Horrible post knee

We just need more police on the streets.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 03/03/2019 11:14

Knife crime is on a cycle, its nowhere as high as it was 20 years ago, but it is at its highest point in 8 years. And I'm going to open my self up here, one of the reasons the reporting is so high profile is the right wing perpetually trashing Sadiq Khan - I didn't see Johnson getting this level of attack when he was mayor, nor did Livingstone, both of whom oversaw far higher levels.

Desperately looking for a graph which covers the 20-odd year cycle, but the obvious ones are nicely edited to 8 years. (And I have no intention of trawling through statistics making my own)

I would point out, most 80% of violent attacks have no weapon, 6% involve a sharp blade.

Another factor is the counting rules changed. Two graphs attached, a little out of date, but showing it has been a lot worse.

There may well be a correlation between reduction in Stop and Search, and an increase in knife crime, but correlation doesn’t equal causation. The police force is on its knees financially, and austerity as a whole has seen council budgets in shreds. I grew up in the area that I now live in, there are now no more youth clubs for teens - there was one in each area when I was younger. Schools can’t and won’t support troubled teens and don’t get the support from services such as CAHMS etc etc because the threshold for support is so high now that being disruptive doesn’t quite cut it and they get expelled. Social services again, massively high thresholds before children can be removed because they just don’t have the money to throw at troubled families although in my experience they try their absolute best. There’s no money, no community support, kids get bigger and bigger and their environment starts to define them. The police can stop and search all day long but until the root cause is addressed, they’re never going to resolve the wider problem. FWIW and just to address some pp comments, in our area, the underclass are white British, and they’re the ones mostly doing the stabbing and being stabbed. They’ve got nothing to do and for the most part come from deprived estates and have no support or encouragement and live in workless households.

Inability to understand your own racism is fortunately your issue and shame to own

theWarOnPeace · 03/03/2019 11:19

Knee no you’re right there, and my kids won’t be either. But. If you’re a feckless idiot of a parent, your child still deserves the correct support to overcome and rise above their environment. The parents fault or not, it was probably their parents’ fault too, but that doesn’t help us end the cycle and live in a nicer world.

Eliza9917 · 03/03/2019 11:20

Enfield do bring in a clause to activate stop and search for set times in the area. If you like their Facebook page you can see what they are doing to tackle the problem and they post pictures of what they find on people.

It's still not making a dent in the problem though.

Livelovebehappy · 03/03/2019 11:20

Maybe part of the answer is for police to disperse gangs of young people hanging around streets at night, and stop and search every single time. TBH, if I was in charge I’d probably have a curfew on anyone under 18 being on our streets after 9 at night, but I know most people would not agree with me on that one!

I do love the way youth clubs always come up as an answer, growing up we had youth clubs, the nerdy kids went to youth club, the naughty kids waited outside at the end of youth club & mugged the nerdy kids for their pocket money

Black people seem wholly incapable of taking responsibility for their own actions and the consequences thereof.

What, all black people? ODFOD. There’s a difference between pointing out that certain communities may have a problem with particular crimes and making sweeping statements about one race like you’ve done. You’ll start bleeting on about how you “can’t say anything anymore because of the PC brigade.” It’s obvious what your aim is.
