To not understand this latest baking trend?

I love a bit of home baking and follow a lot of cake makers etc. on instagram. I can't understand this latest trend of putting chocolate bars, sweets and biscuits out of a packet on homemade bakes especially from people who are then selling them to the public as a business. So they're making say a chocolate chip cookie or a brownie and then sticking a Jaffa cake or a jammie dodger on it! I understand say maltesers to decorate a cake or a rocky road made with broken up chocolate bars but what's the point of buying home made and half of what you're paying for is a biscuit out of a packet.

YANBU. I'm really not a fan of cakes anyway but the ones with full crunchie bars on look sooo sickly!!

That said I don't think the cakes with chocolate fingers around thw sides fall into this category

What heresy is this? ilovemaxi you should be kneeling on marshmallows and beating yourself with liquorice laces to atone for this

Grin I meant as opposed to just baking it yourself. I would never buy chocolate chip cookies. They’re so easy to make (and I’m really not a baker!) so it would take something pretty extra to make me buy them at the prices they sell for in these cottage industry baking business.

switsy Shock that’s horrendous! You can’t bite into that slice!

It's a load of shitty old custard creams MASQUERADING as a fancy pants gateau. I'd fling it back at whoever served it to me Grin

Isn’t it just an easy way to make cakes look good without having the sugar craft skills?

I imagine they’re for special occasions not every week. I do a sweetie / bar covered cake for dds birthday at her request. She used to have traditionally decorated cakes.

Switsy - OMG. That's just a custard cream covered in about 10,000 extra unnecessary calories of fat and sugar. Confused

I made my own wedding cake - chocolate ganache cheesecake with Oreos and brownies dotted in on top of the chocolate digestive base, layer of salted caramel over the ganache then topped with butter fudge icing, cocoa powder and chocolate decorations. It tasted fucking fantastic.

So a slice of custard creams? Ew

Good lord-how to ruin a custard cream!

I don't even like them that much, but can't see how that would improve them-or any biscuit!

@Switsy, you're not wrong there! And custard creams, ugh

Yeah that custard cream cake, all that work to make the toppings and decorate it and when you bite into it, it's a shop bought custard cream! Such an anticlimax if you were given a slice of that. What a gimmick.

I was thinking you’re all being a bit harsh but then that “cake” Switsy posted has made me furious. Actually properly angry. It looks like a lovely cake then it’s just custard creams in ganache. And it would be actually really difficult and fiddly to make! Absolute cunts.

That custard cream cake had me thinking would custard creams taste nice smooshed up and turned into a cheesecake base? I do a chocolate brownie cheesecake but I've never done a custard cream one hmmmm

I've done something on a smaller scale for years, although I freely admit it is partly laziness!

Buy cakes decorated in this way? I missed that. No way would I buy something so simple. Stick a bunch of kitkats / Cadbury’s fingers round the sides and shove sweeties on the top or ice and add a selection of biscuits on the top, easy peasy. That custard cream cake is a monstrosity. Just why? Who would want a slice of that? Looks dry and tasteless.

The chocolate orange was because some fussy people would complain about buns being chocolate orange flavoured. The segment hopefully gives them a clue!

Wasn't this done in the last series of The Apprentice? Perhaps that's how it's become so popular.

So I generally hate these things too..... except that custard cream thing looks pretty fab. I’d eat that. If it the same with pink wagers though, it would be returned with haste straight into the mouth of hell itself.

Ugh, that custard cream cake, so over rich as well. I'm really going off cakes since cupcakes came in, more icing than cake. I am more into a plain jam sponge these days, with a sprinkle of icing sugar. Luckily that's about all I can bake!

Switsy · 02/03/2019 19:26

@slipperywhensparticus whizzed up oreos make a good cheesecake base so the custard creams probably would too.

YABVU. I made this for my dd's birthday and the Cadbury fingers were essential in covering up my shit decorating skills! Grin I make a good sponge, but Im crap with the decorating thing!

It's completely unnecessary and ruins cake. Cake is cake. It's lovely as it is. Leave cake alone.

Similarly, wtf is with Freak Shakes? A milkshaked topped with biscuits, sweets, candyfloss and a bloody doughnut!!
