To not understand this latest baking trend?

I love a bit of home baking and follow a lot of cake makers etc. on instagram. I can't understand this latest trend of putting chocolate bars, sweets and biscuits out of a packet on homemade bakes especially from people who are then selling them to the public as a business. So they're making say a chocolate chip cookie or a brownie and then sticking a Jaffa cake or a jammie dodger on it! I understand say maltesers to decorate a cake or a rocky road made with broken up chocolate bars but what's the point of buying home made and half of what you're paying for is a biscuit out of a packet.

I bought what I thought were hot cross buns only to find they were choc chip and caramel "hot cross buns". Abomination! They are vile.

That custard cream thing-I counted 6 actual custard creams in a slice plus the sickening slop they spilt into the gap and over the top so only 1200 cals or so -blerg -just wondering what sort of person you would have to be to, not only think that was a good idea in the first place, but to pay for something like that?! And what sort of friends would you have if they all pretended that was an amazing cake...?!

There are some ok dessert mashups out there. Like bread and butter pudding made from pain au chocolate. Or waffles soaked and layered into a trifle/tiramisu type thing

I would only eat a custard cream if it was the only biscuit in the house and I was desperate for something sweet ( I think of it on a level with Nice biscuits and slightly below Malted Milks and Bourbon Creams). The custard cream cake looks lovely until it is sliced and the sheer Custard Cream dullness is exposed.

This is a new one on me, but I must admit when the kids were little and I was really skint, I used to make my own 'crunchy chocolate' ice cream.

Id' buy a big tub of own brand Vanilla and stir in a packet of smashed up cheap own brand Bourbon biscuits.

It went down a treat.

There's a cake maker that I use that does proper brownies.

We get a mix of ferrero rocher and some chocolate orange, both with the chocolates on top. We love them.

It adds a dimension, as was once probably done with different breads/naans and adding fruit etc to things like scones.

I personally don't like spice in anything baked, so no hot cross buns, but I wouldn't critise those that do.

Yanbu. I know cakes aren’t exactly healthy but it just feels like unnecessary extra calories. I like brownies, it doesn’t need a mars bar in the middle.

Showing my age here but I remember forty years ago the height of sophistication was a dessert made by dipping ginger biscuits into sherry, then sticking them together with whipped cream to form a log, and then covering the whole thing in cream. Overnight in the fridge and it was a very gooey, boozy, gingery pudding.

Chocolate fingers round the side, fine. Matchmakers ditto. Chocolate buttons, smarties or maltesers scattered on the top, or a few other little sweets, lovely. Grated chocolate orange or Aero, fab. Cadburys mini eggs are essential if you are making chocolate nests.

Great lumps of other stuff or whole biscuits jammed in... no.

Chocolate fingers (or even Kitkat fingers) get a pass from me too, when used as edging

But not when used in place of an actual cake (like the custard cream thingy in the video) or as compensation for poor decorating skills (plonking an Oreo on top of a cupcake)

I’ll give a pass for the chocolate fingers thing. But the whole confectionary cake is just ridiculous. However DD loved the custard cream thing!

As much as I love a custard cream, that looks nasty, I would be expecting a lovely cake and would feel cheated.

Also why ruin any cake with Oreo's? They are awful, rock hard and no flavour.

How am I meant to dunk a bloody custard cream cake into my cuppa?!!

This makes my eye twitch. I'm not the best at combining weird things to make a meal but a hard biccie or choc bar should not be put on cakes.

Its like that idea of sticking kit kats round the edge! noooo.. cakes are soooooooft.... cakes are eaten with a fork/ spoon/ hands. kit kat is hard... If I have to dismantle a cake to eat it I don't want it.

Just give me a slice of gooey choc cake and a kit kat separately ta very much.

And don't get me started with hard sweets inside a cake. Are you trying to break my teeth and deprive me of inside cake goodness?!

I think chocolate fingers are an exception, and certainly cheaper than buying those chocolate cigarellos that you see in proper patisseries. That cake looks lovely.

It's completely unnecessary and ruins cake. Cake is cake. It's lovely as it is. Leave cake alone.

Similarly, wtf is with Freak Shakes? A milkshaked topped with biscuits, sweets, candyfloss and a bloody doughnut!!
