To think that my friend has lied to me for money?

A month ago, my friend decided that it'd be a good idea for us two to go on an overseas trip in April for "old time's sake" (we were very close during our uni years). I agreed, and sent £500 to her bank account to cover for my share of the lodging (payment was all supposed to be done online).

Fast forward to today, trip is cancelled since she "doesn't feel like going anymore". Okay, no problem. Asked her to transfer me the money, and she can't because she's "only got cash at the moment" and she wondered if I could "wait till Friday".

AIBU to be suspicious about this? If she was planning to book everything as per our agreement, why would she even withdraw the money in the first place? I don't want to sound like the paranoid/untrusting friend so haven't said anything to her beyond an "Oh, okay thanks".

She'll be saying she couldn't withdraw it all from her account at the same time, I bet, and it'll have to wait until next Saturday. Or something like that. Then she'll brush it off with more lighthearted "But you're not desperate for it, are you?" tinkly laugh

OP I would invent some problem with the car/boiler etc to give you some extra leverage otherwise she is going to put you off again, saying “oh but you dont really need it at the moment do you?!”

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 08/03/2019 08:18

I’m interested to see if she apologises or if OP is supposed to thank her for keeping her money for weeks and then returning it.Wink

Some people are dreadful.

LoisWilkerson1 · 08/03/2019 08:55

If she's into showing off new clothes on instagram, she could well be short of cash. It's an expensive hobbyGrin She was very rude op.

Nowthenforever2019 · 08/03/2019 08:59

I'm not confident but hope I'm proved wrong!

CountessWindyBottom · 08/03/2019 09:06

I really hope you get your money back. It’s very odd that she instigated the suggestion of a weekend away and then suddenly cancelled it because she didn’t feel like going. Seems to me like she realized she can’t afford the trip and in addition used your money as a short term ‘loan’. I agree with the suggestion of saying you’re glad you have it as a cushion as boiler has packed up/clutch gone in car etcetc. Hope it works out for you! Flowers
