To think Stacey Dooley was right in her response to David Lammy

“ Africa doesn’t need white saviours” says Lammy commenting on pictures of Stacey Dooley on a comic relief trip. Why pick on her? Loads of celebrities over the years have gone to Africa to show how money is helping the poorest of the poor, and the huge difference it has made over the years.
What Africa does need is governments that are not corrupt and better leaders.

Wow TwitToWoo that is awful, I dien't know that, I totally agree with you, that is why I highlighted celebrity Westerners, not colour, it is not about that!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 02/03/2019 10:07

Upthread when someone said Lammy was racist, it was pointed out that he had a white wife and therefore it was unlikely. Why does his white wife have any relevance but michael's black husband doesn't?

And quencher you might prefer that certain people don't donate, but you have no right to speak for those women in Uganda who are dying through lack of healthcare. Has anyone asked them?

Wrt SD and Instagram - some people can't exist without posting their every breath on social media. She was just cooing over a cute kid, as people are inclined to do. Is she supposed to be miserable the whole time she's there. She is in a place seeing lives being saved that wouldn't otherwise. Maybe that made her happy.

CR can't fix everything, but the impact for the individuals it has helped shouldn't be written off as nothing

“Terms such as 'white fragility' 'white saviour' and 'white supermacist'
I do think putting “white supremacist” in that group suggests that you may not understand any of the terms being used. Or at leas I hope not!

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 10:13

“Why does his white wife have any relevance but michael's black husband doesn't?”

Presumably because Lammy didn’t say “I checked with my white wife and she agrees with me so that proves I’m right”?

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 02/03/2019 10:18

He probably did though and she probably does Wink

Aeroflotgirl · 02/03/2019 10:19

Thank you Bertrand I do, I saw white supremacist used further upthread, along with the usual negative labels.

OrangeCinnamon · 02/03/2019 10:28

If Owen Jones had said it would there have been this amount of outrage do we think?

Would we have the amount of vitriolic posts 'well I'm not going to bother to donate anymore as a white person I'm offended brigade'?

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 10:32

Oh well, I suppose it’s good that there are people ready to stand up for poor beleaguered minority groups....

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 10:35

What I find odd is how easily people are put off doing things they think are right. If I was truly committed to something like Comic Relief, one MP criticising it in a way I didn’t agree with would probably make me donate “more”, rather than make me take my bat home!

Quintella · 02/03/2019 10:37

It's a masterclass in white fragility in here

Isn't it just. The tantrumming is something to behold.

OrangeCinnamon · 02/03/2019 10:41

This is exactly what I don't get Bertrand it's so weird.

The term 'white saviour' is very problematic and David should not necessarily have used it when referring to Stacey he did explain he considered it a historical issue regarding race. If he had said 'Western Saviour' I wonder if it would have been similar reaction of people getting upset about one MP challenging comic relief.

CheerioHunter · 02/03/2019 10:43

white fragility god, another term to shoot down any response that does back up an original posters (not the OP to this thread) argument.

White privilege, white fragility, racists, bigots etc.
Getting to a point where debates can oy be one sides or there needs to be a catch phrase for everyone to jump on to shoot it down.

But still, none of this escapes the fact the guy is massive c**t

KingHenrysCodpiece · 02/03/2019 10:47

I'm trying to think why you think its ok to say this. But I don't doubt if I talked about Black fragility it would not be so casually accepted.

Nope I cannot imagine a scenario where it would be fine.

Aeroflotgirl · 02/03/2019 10:47

I am seeing s few 'white saviours' on this thread right here. Stomping their feet because people dare have a different view to them.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 10:48

It's hard to wade through all these tears.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 10:49

Classic tantrumming.

Well done you!

Coffeebean76 · 02/03/2019 10:50

*So...a few weeks ago I talked about Meghan Markle going to Rwanda for three days and posing with unnamed children for photographs that she used on her blog and which were also featured in a magazine article called “Humanitarian Glam” (because of what she was wearing).

After coming back she wrote a truly repellent article praising herself and claiming that she divided her life between “red carpets and refugee camps” (after spending three days in Rwanda). Notably she never once used the platform she was given to actually talk about Rwanda - only herself.*

Agree with this. That article was horribly self serving and the worst example of white/western/celebrity saviour. Using cute African babies for faux humanitarian instagram opportunities is disgusting.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 10:52

People will vehemently deny it but of the fact Lammy is a black man is a major reason as to why people are so outraged by what he's said and why he's repeatedly being called a cunt. They think he should pipe down and know his place.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 02/03/2019 10:54

TwitToWoo

I saw that on MM blog. But you can't expect to be on any thread about MM and mention anything negative without being automatically called a racist. You should know better.

CheerioHunter · 02/03/2019 10:58

People will vehemently deny it but of the fact Lammy is a black man is a major reason as to why people are so outraged by what he's said and why he's repeatedly being called a cunt.

No, Owen Jones is arguably an even bigger c**t.
But hey, don't let that get in the way of pushing your agenda.

Aeroflotgirl · 02/03/2019 10:59

Again making race an issue. The 'white saviours' are out in force today! Anybody that does not agree with their limited view!

Switsy · 02/03/2019 10:59

As I said, people will deny it.

Oh, I mentioned he’s married to a white woman because a PP accused David Lammy of being a racist towards Stacey who is a white woman. I can’t speak as to why the other PP decided to mention her black husband “before anyone says anything”.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 02/03/2019 11:10

Because that poster felt she would be accused of being racist or suffering from 'white fragility' so she wanted to pre-empt the typical backlash she knew she would likely experience.

Still got the backlash anyway.
