To think Stacey Dooley was right in her response to David Lammy

“ Africa doesn’t need white saviours” says Lammy commenting on pictures of Stacey Dooley on a comic relief trip. Why pick on her? Loads of celebrities over the years have gone to Africa to show how money is helping the poorest of the poor, and the huge difference it has made over the years.
What Africa does need is governments that are not corrupt and better leaders.

I haven't read the whole thread but I do agree with Lammy. I have always felt uncomfortable with the way Comic relief presents Africa. He was not being personal about Stacey. He was criticising who she is working for who should have used her and advised her better. Her caption under the photo is the worst thing in my opinion. Very naive.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 01/03/2019 23:29

Catsinthecupboard I totally agree with your post 1000%

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 23:35

And there you have it. Everything that happens to Africa is the fault of the UK. Therefore we should keep our hands in our pockets. Ok. Not our problem let’s stop foreign aid completely. Colonial bastards that we are.

My point is that £1bn spent on a continent comprising 50 vastly different countries over 30 years is nothing when Britain is going to spend £40bn over the same time period for a railway that we can't even agree on Imissgmichael

A billion quid isn't going to go very far. Especially eked out over 30 years. And yet Comic Relief pat themselves on the back and perpetuate the myth that their model is working while sending slebs out there in that there Africa.

YABU

I'm tired of the white saviours narrative.

Aside from corruption Africa is a rich continent with vast resources supporting the WEST.

Take for instance France who are still benefitting from their colonial tax... they even did the same thing to Haiti....who paid France from 1825 to 1947 for daring to become free men and women 😱.
... imagine all the diamonds in the royal jewels... can't remember there being a diamond field in the U.K.

Stacey Dooley needs to go do some research and educate herself. It's a distasteful photo.

Fazackerley · 01/03/2019 23:45

If Africa is so injured by their portrayal then why are they taking the money?

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 23:53

Limit I agree with you. I don’t think you understand what I meant. The money spent on a British railway is British tax
Payer money spent on something for British taxpayers.

Hey let’s stop this patting on the back. Perhaps all donations should stop seeing there all racist.

quencher · 01/03/2019 23:55

@Imissgmichael people and their black whatever person. Grin
That defence is tired and old. Get a new one. And not an African child from the orphanage either. Madonna has done that already.

Your black husband deserves a medal for representing all black people. We all bow down at his blackness and mercy for we have forgotten our saviour .

On. Serious note, you cannot give with one hand and take with the other. You cannot think that the little charity people make will solve the bigger issue. To ignore the role the uk plays is silly. To ignore the sort of games that takes place to keep certain people in power is ignorant and naive.

quencher · 02/03/2019 00:10

If Africa is so injured by their portrayal then why are they taking the money? I said you cannot spoon feed people.

Read up on African debt and how it works. How they pay it back. Corruption from those governments is the cherry on top of fuckups. Taking money is ingrained in a lot of the systems. I say systems because you cannot just generalise all of Africa. Every each country has it won way of dealing with colonial past even though there is general history. White saviour is actually ingrained in the system. The way white people are worshiped around sub Saharan African is something else. And if people think that it's a joke they need to look beyond the money they give.

The first primary school I went to, they came and signed up lots of children whom they assumed where orphaned. At that time I was living with my grandparents and my grand mother thought it was wrong and not necessary to do so. She thought it was bad luck to claim other wise. Some people did because they could. Most people will not say no to any form of help if offered.
One of the first things I remover the children being told was that they would be given bags from England. None of them ever received it. Not to my knowledge anyway as child. But even then I knew that every time the children where promised things they would never receive it. I know this because kids will always talk.

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:20

Limited and Smitzy what colour are you. Where you brought up in the 60s like my husband.
Where you physically attacked by a police officer when you were 10. Kicked off your bike and threatened with violence if you complained. Were you told by teachers when you were beaten up it was probably your fault.

You have no idea what you are talking about. How dare you.

MariaNovella · 02/03/2019 00:27

Stacey Dooley has built her career on being an insular uneducated ignoramus having her eyes opened to life’s harsh realities. Her value lies in the fact that she is easy for other uneducated people to identify with and learn from without feeling intimidated.

However, sometimes Stacey Dooley’s lack of education means she makes cringeworthy mistakes. This is one of those times!

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:29

Quencher you need help.for gods sake najeca didn’t cries appointment.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 00:32

You have no idea what you are talking about. How dare you.

What are you wittering on about now? Angry that your attempt to shut down any disagreement with 'my husband is black and he agrees with me. So there!' failed?

You've ranted, you've raved. You've said very little of substance.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 00:33

Quencher you need help.for gods sake najeca didn’t cries appointment.

^^

Well someone needs help, that's for sure...

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:34

Limited do you think my husband view should be ignored

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:38

Switsy you are ignoring racism.

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 00:40

Imissgmichael If your husband thinks Lammy is racist he has a very strange definition of racism.

Switsy · 02/03/2019 00:42

I think it's a very cheap tactic indeed to use racism that your husband has suffered to shut down people who disagree with you on this subject. Disgusting of you in fact.

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:42

Ok I’ve looked at what everyone’s said. It’s ridiculous that white people are some how critisized for caring about people in

quencher · 02/03/2019 00:42

Quencher you need help.for gods sake najeca didn’t cries appointment. Thanks for the save and being very kind and thoughtful. I will take with both hands Grin

BertrandRussell · 02/03/2019 00:46

“It’s ridiculous that white people are some how critisized for caring about people in”
White peoples are not being criticised for being caring. They are being criticised for having pictures taken of themselves with anonymous black babies and putting them on Instagram with crass captions.

Imissgmichael · 02/03/2019 00:53

quencher your a nasty person and quite racist.
