To think Stacey Dooley was right in her response to David Lammy

“ Africa doesn’t need white saviours” says Lammy commenting on pictures of Stacey Dooley on a comic relief trip. Why pick on her? Loads of celebrities over the years have gone to Africa to show how money is helping the poorest of the poor, and the huge difference it has made over the years.
What Africa does need is governments that are not corrupt and better leaders.

@Imissgmichael I know who SD is an I have watch most of her doc. My problem is even not with her. People's comments have pissed me right off. I would rather people who cared donated rather than those who do it because they have quilt and when they find an African better than them they think it's ok to bully that person.”

What have quilts got to do with it?

An African better then them? what the hell does that mean.

“And let's not divert this topic away into antisemitism”. Wrong sort of bigotry. OK then. I see you.

user1457017537 · 01/03/2019 21:51

Did I read that Comic Relief have millions on deposit that had not been given out to needy causes. Also Terry Wogan was very highly paid for presenting it wasn’t he and did not do it for free.

Justanotherlurker · 01/03/2019 21:58

He has a legitimate point but he has history of race baiting under the umbrella of being left progressive.

Its a more of an alternative mainstream slant on the divide and conquer tactics that both tribal political sides want to hunker down in.

It should show the situation is far more nuanced than what it is, but some are so knee deep in political ideology that any nuance is lost.

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 21:58

“People keep going on about how Comic Relief has raised £1 billion over 30 years. Wow.

HSB2 which is not even built yet, and might never be, is on course to cost Britain £80bn to connect London to Manchester and Leeds”

And what’s your point? HSB2 is being paid for by tax money. Comic Relief is being paid for by voluntary contributions

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:02

Well, you can see me all you want. I would not go into a thread talking about antisemitism and divert the topic. This is bigger than Stacy or David. I have wanted this stupid racist rhetoric to end for years. I know there will be a slight change and it will be for the better.

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 22:06

“Comic relief should end its clearly had it's time when they start to complain that people are doing it wrong and focusing on the colour of anyone's skin it is failing

Plus we have been helping them since I was in middle school I turn 44 next week nothing has changed in thirty odd years we have failed let someone else try”

Yes apparently you’re right. Let’s leave Africa to it.

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:06

And what’s your point? HSB2 is being paid for by tax money. Comic Relief is being paid for by voluntary contributions the point is, you should look at it in the grand scheme of things. What the money is actually worth on the ground? How much of that money gets there? Who uses the money when all the aid workers from Europe have left?

Pashal2 · 01/03/2019 22:10

Who?

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:10

Are people actually thinking that 1b would save the whole continent of Africa within 30 years? Can people just sit back and actually think about that? Really! Just think about.

While you are at it, think about how much resources has been stripped from the continent. Hmm

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 22:13

“Well, you can see me all you want. I would not go into a thread talking about antisemitism and divert the topic. This is bigger than Stacy or David. I have wanted this stupid racist rhetoric to end for years. I know there will be a slight change and it will be for the better”

Yep you’re right, racist white people giving to African charities. It’s because of people like you with your ‘divide and conquer every ones racist’ attitude divisions are caused stopping people contributing. But hey you’ve already said that’s ok with you. You need to check your agenda.

Switsy · 01/03/2019 22:13

And continue to be stripped.

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 22:17

Can you still hear from that big hole you’ve dug quencher?

If every single person in the Uk stopped contributing, what would you say?

Imissgmichael · 01/03/2019 22:24

There you have it. I will cancel all my donations now. Thanks for the tip. Happy now?

I know all the above but always hopef some of my contributions got through. However as you think it’s a waste of time and it in any case makes me racist why bother. Cheers.

Switsy · 01/03/2019 22:25

cheers!

Catsinthecupboard · 01/03/2019 22:35

I think that there is a genuine worldwide push to divide people at the moment.

White vs black, religious differences, sexual orientations, male vs female. Rich vs poor.

In reality, i think it's more like political ideology playing us.

I've usually gotten along best with people on my income level and I've started at very bottom. Now tryng to stay middle.

I can say this current "everyone white is evil" isn't anymore true than "everyone black is evil." We need to think for ourselves and STOP being led down this path of division!!

I remember food rotting on docks bc of corruption in 80s. In 90s there was a concerted effort to rebuild infrastructure that failed too.

Until governments are responsible and govern fairly, Africa will stay in conflict. They're in flux right now and China is/was setting up schools there? Why? To better use the people for labor and mining resources?

Religion is being used to keep conflict going. Education is a weapon to prevent people from gaining their own lives. Or rather lack of education.

Africa is a continent. Many countries. Many governments. Not even a common religion. It's had generations of war and despots.

It's not about collecting money. Nothing will change until the politics does. Going over there to help is both laudable and stupid.

I do not know the answers but I'm really sure that there is something bigger afoot than what is obvious.

It's not just Africa. Step back a look at the bigger global picture. I don't know what's going on, but someone's ginning things up.

This is an American former politician who seems to have more understanding than most about our world's turmoil.

I can hear and see very well. Grin

I guess African are shaking in their donated boots because they will all die from poverty. Come on! And I am the one dividing and conquering? You just don't want somethings pointed out.

sunshine11 · 01/03/2019 22:38

In so fed up with the ‘white privilege’ agenda. Like somehow we should have to apologise for our skin colour or country of birth.

What does it matter how the aid is raised? As long as the aid happens? The (black) in country governments sure as hell aren’t helping their own people. And monies given by our own government invariably end up in the pockets of the corrupt.

I think that until people are prepared to give up their lovely houses, nice cars and warm beds, and swap places with those less fortunate than us, they should STFU.

Switsy · 01/03/2019 22:42

In so fed up with the ‘white privilege’ agenda. Like somehow we should have to apologise for our skin colour or country of birth.

My heart breaks for your suffering.

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:44

It’s because of people like you with your ‘divide and conquer every ones racist’ attitude divisions are caused stopping people contributing. But hey you’ve already said that’s ok with you. You need to check your agenda. Nope! Not everyone is racist. You just choose to believe that a system can be racist and people will willingly go along with it because they only think of little things pushed right up their noses constantly. Maybe you should try and see beyond the dying children.

Maybe you should see beyond the children during the baifran famine and why that happened. What the British government played in that war and what legacy it left behind? While you are thinking of those children, you can also, wonder about the legacy of that very war and why bokoharam is a thing now and abducting and killing more children.

Switsy · 01/03/2019 22:45

Yes. African countries need saving from themselves........by all those well meaning multinationals like Elf, Shell, and BP, plundering Africa's natural resources.

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:49

Until governments are responsible and govern fairly, Africa will stay in conflict. They're in flux right now and China is/was setting up schools there? Why? To better use the people for labor and mining resources? True! Another form of colonial rule and it's one which is sipping in because people think that the little help they get is worth more than receiving charity. They think they are working for their money when in fact it's another form of close your eyes while you pray so that we can take your resource bullshit.

Bicyclethief · 01/03/2019 22:52

David Lammy should focus on representing his constituents who voted for him instead. There are plenty of people here both black and white who going to food banks to survive in Tottenham.

It's time to think aid and charity. It never goes to the right people. What Africa needs is fair trade, perhaps David can focus on this in parliament instead of having a cheap shot at some minor white celeb who everyone will forget about in s few years.

This identity politics is just so decisive, it's not going serve anyone well.

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:53

What does it matter how the aid is raised? As long as the aid happens? The (black) in country governments sure as hell aren’t helping their own people. And monies given by our own government invariably end up in the pockets of the corrupt. Maybe you should read up on that. You can't be spoon fed all the time.

What does it matter how the aid is raised? How insulting? Do you mean dignity means nothing for a human being? Omg this is Steve Harvey at its best.

quencher · 01/03/2019 22:56

In so fed up with the ‘white privilege’ agenda. Like somehow we should have to apologise for our skin colour or country of birth. But it's ok for black child right? They didn't choose to be born in a place where people are willing to take advantage of them. Use them at all cost to make money like prostitute and ditch them when they can.

PerkingFaintly · 01/03/2019 22:58

It astounds me how some people on MN are perfectly capable of grasping that talking about male violence and eg adverts using stereotyped images of male violence, does not mean we're saying all men are violent.

But are unable to grasp that the same is true when we talk about racial tropes.

There is a specific trope, that of the White Saviour. It's been around more than a century and is very well explored. As pointed out above, Kipling even wrote poetry about it. (Perhaps it could indeed be re-named Western Saviour these days, but White Saviour is the original trope.)

Stacey Dooley played into this trope, and was criticised for it.

This doesn't magically expand into a claim that "everyone white is evil."Hmm

I'm white and don't feel I'm being labelled "evil" by people criticising Dooley's Instagramming. Why on earth would I?
