AIBU to ask family to bring their own food?

borntobequiet · 28/02/2019 09:36

I have family visiting for Easter. I know they have been "forward purchasing" in case of shortages caused by any no-deal Brexit, as have I. Would I be unreasonable to ask then to bring their own food to avoid depleting my store? The children will eat up all my pasta and pesto in next to no time. And I don't want to waste freezer space on fish fingers, which I never eat.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 28/02/2019 11:25

As an aside, I think Crouch End Dad has a point.

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/02/2019 11:36

I would wait, see what happens in the next few weeks and if there are shortages rethink the Easter plans then, if they delay Brexit by a couple of months which they keep mentioning then Easter should be fine for getting food in. Always best to have a small stash anyway in case of bad weather or illness.

MrsExpo · 28/02/2019 11:36

You've been forward buying pasta in case of a No Deal brexit ...??

Confused

.....misses the point entirely .....

downcasteyes · 28/02/2019 11:41

OP's slightly hysterical attitude aside, I think it really says something that the government didn't even think about the fact that the deadline for Brexit is in the middle of what food growers call 'the hungry gap' - the time of year when there isn't much homegrown produce about.

I really wonder about the isolation of threads like this from society. Say the OP is right about there being no food imports at all after Brexit happening in late March (two massive assumptions there, but let's go with it for now). How long do you think supermarkets would remain totally empty before serious social unrest began? It would begin much earlier than Easter.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 11:47

There won't be no imports but if you read the impact assessment that OP posted you'll see that delays and shortages are expected along with price rises. It is sensible to have a buffer of food and household essentials. Like pp I'd rather be safe inside with my supplies than out queuing or fighting over the last milk or whatever. No one has got a warehouse full, but those of us prepping have got extra supplies to last varying amounts of time depending on our budgets and storage space. I have about 3 weeks in average, more in terms of medicines and household supplies.

NannyRed · 28/02/2019 11:48

Yes, that would be beyond unreasonable, that would be incredibly rude.

If you don’t want to feed your family, don’t invite them.
Better just buy another bag of pasta.

Yabbers · 28/02/2019 11:58

I see “Effects of Brexit” on every project risk and exclusion register these days. I never thought would appear on the list of things to think about when family visit.

If you need to ask if YABU you’ve probably got bigger problems to worr about.

Be sure and get extra tinfoil!

IDoN0tCare · 28/02/2019 12:01

You’re brilliant, OP. I can’t believe you actually went and started a thread. Well done, you brave woman. 🥇

gnushoes · 28/02/2019 12:14

Good grief there are some unicorns on this thread. How can you all be so badly informed? If we crash out without a deal on March 29 there are likely to be major shortages for the short term at least. And buying extra now isn't being greedy - the supermarkets can replenish shelves now which means there is more for the unicorns to panic buy come March 30 when it all goes tits up.

IDoN0tCare · 28/02/2019 12:15

BINGO! I call bingo!

Can we have TheElementsSong’s Brexittania Dictionary please? 🥺

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 28/02/2019 12:18

Well I wouldn't be travelling and staying with anyone over Easter if all they were feeding me is bloody pesto pasta. I expect a full roast, duck eggs, hot cross buns dripping with butter, simnel cake and mountains of chocolate, oh and wine. Actually that has reminded me that I definitely must stock up on wine. I've got a full drinks cupboard, but getting a little low on the wine. Thanks for the reminder Op.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 12:19

@IDoN0tCare I knew it would be comedy gold hence encouraging OP Grin

I do love a good Aibu for the incredulous responses 🤣

On a serious note, it's worrying how many still have their heads in the sand over the anticipated effects of a no deal brexit. I worry for those with health conditions and vulnerable family members such as children and the elderly.

I hope everything is cancelled goes smoothly but if it doesn't I'm secure in my stash and know my family will have enough to eat. I also have extra for my elderly (leaver) mum. She has her own small stash but it's not as extensive as mine and she can't afford price hikes on her pension.

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 12:28

House!

There’s some people here who may soon be thinking back to this thread and kicking themselves.

Just because we’ve grown up in a country where we have good infrastructure and food is plentiful doesn’t mean that’s inevitable under any and all circumstances.

Look how quickly the London riots devolved into every idiot looting for TVs and setting fires, look at what happened when one KFC ran out of chicken - what do you think will happen if supermarket stocks drop by even 25%? What percentage of products on supermarket shelves do you think are either imported completely, or made in the U.K. with imported ingredients?

The millennium bug got sorted, thanks to an obscene amount of work by people who knew what they were doing, so we are screwed on both counts there. The millennium bug could have quite easily messed up everything from banking to air travel without those interventions, so anyone who stockpiled then was pretty sensible. They didn’t need it so they would have just used it up - sorted.

When people are setting fire to Waitrose, you’re welcome to go and see about that croissant - best of luck!

Oh you are wicked......but I like you. Grin

viques · 28/02/2019 12:37

You could always go a bit Jonathan Swift on them and suggest that since we will all be making sacrifices post Brexit they might like to nominate one of their children to be the highlight of the BBQ........

I wouldn't worry too much about upsetting them, sounds as though you won't be seeing much of them in the future.

BlimeyCalmDown · 28/02/2019 12:38

This has to be a troll thread! Even if you were stockpiling you would just buy an extra bag of pasta duh

DontCallMeCharlotte · 28/02/2019 12:39

If you've got people coming, better stockpile stunt pineapples too.

Grin

You can have my ration of pesto OP (or not OP). Vile stuff.

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 12:41

But Easter is weeks after Brexit so if there is very limited food she likely won’t have much (if any) left and would understandably not want everyone to turn up and eat what she does have

Jinglejanglefish · 28/02/2019 12:41

Surely if you have guests coming you’d do a shop for the period they’re there? Why would they eat your stash?

GreatWesternValkyrie · 28/02/2019 12:43

I agree with 7yo7yo, eat them. Not in one sitting obvs, you may need to eke them out over several months, so smoking and/or salting is probably required.

Some tinned fava beans might be useful too 🍴

SinkGirl · 28/02/2019 12:45

Surely if you have guests coming you’d do a shop for the period they’re there? Why would they eat your stash?

I think you’ve missed the point there a bit!

LightAsTheBreeze · 28/02/2019 12:51

Pasta is horrible anyway, one bag lasts us about 6 months and that is only because DH eats it occasionally

How much pasta do you expect to dish up, just get an extra bag now.

Jinglejanglefish · 28/02/2019 12:51

SinkGirl

I haven’t, food shortages does not mean absolutley no food, there will still be supermarkets, life will go on. If it really is that bad after 29th March and you will have to feed guests precious food that you need to survive, just don’t have guests, there will be more important things to worry about.
