AIBU to ask family to bring their own food?

I have family visiting for Easter. I know they have been "forward purchasing" in case of shortages caused by any no-deal Brexit, as have I. Would I be unreasonable to ask then to bring their own food to avoid depleting my store? The children will eat up all my pasta and pesto in next to no time. And I don't want to waste freezer space on fish fingers, which I never eat.

Ha ha. Very funny OP.

capaciousbladder · 28/02/2019 10:37

Perhaps if you ask them to come earlier than Easter/Brexit, you could ask them to help you dig your shelter in your garden? And plant you vegetable patch. Dig for victory!!!! All for the price of a bit of extra pesto Wink

ADropofReality · 28/02/2019 10:38

Goodness knows how we got through WW2 if this was the mentality. As soon as Neville Chamberlain finished speaking everyone would've been down the shops buying anything they could get their hands on.

You do realise if the shops run out of bloody pesto there are 1001 things to eat that aren't pesto?

I voted Remain but for God's sake have a bit of faith in your country.

Op - I would play it by ear. Hopefully, all will be fine as there'll, more than likely, be an extension to A50 by at least a few months so a crash out on March 29th is unlikely. No harm in stocking up on extra pasta etc for the visit now if you have the space .

It sounds like you are, quite rightly, anxious about the implications of no deal. However, it also sounds like you and your family are preparing as best you can, so try not to get overly anxious.

The naïveté of some people is amazing - do you not read about what’s happening right now in terms of Brexit?

Yes, the UK manufactures food - not nearly enough to feed the population of the U.K., however. Where do you think all the ingredients for food and medications made in the UK come from - all grown and produced in the U.K.?

At present we send a significant percentage of our livestock to be slaughtered in Europe because we don’t have enough slaughterhouse capacity, and then it gets shipped back. Most of the fruit and much of the veg we eat is produced abroad. If just one ingredient in a processed food comes from abroad, the production of that product will be affected.

What do you think happens is there are (pretty much inevitable) issues with customs in the event of No Deal? Why do you think so many people who know what they’re talking about are so opposed to this? Have a look in your fridge and cupboards and see what you think you’d be able to get.

If you’re not holding stocks of enough food / essentials to get through at least a tough couple of weeks, you’re a fool.

I don’t believe it will be Armageddon but think about the things that could be impacted by a severe backlog at customs (food, medicine, fuel, other essentials produced abroad, trucks stuck in queues rather than delivering things, so a truck that’s due to make a two day trip to Europe and then come back and do multiple other jobs may not be able to get out / back and that has a knock on effect to everything else).

Stocking up on tinned and dried goods is so easily done if you can afford to - why wouldn’t you do it just in case, when the likelihood of an issue is so high?

OP, I guess it really depends on the situation by Easter - if everything has gone to shit and everyone is living on their stockpiles then it would be more than reasonable I guess. Maybe buy extra of those things now just in case.

Alsohuman · 28/02/2019 10:41

Maybe they could bring food for you too? And their own bedding and towels. Or maybe save on petrol and stay at home which is what I’d do if I were them.

Seriously? Have you been following this shitshow?

If we do crash out with no deal, no amount of faith in our country will make customs function as it does presently given the current arrangements for importing and exporting from / to the EU.

ChoccyBiccyTastic · 28/02/2019 10:48

If you've got people coming, better stockpile stunt pineapples too.

Nickpan · 28/02/2019 10:57

OP, what were you like with the Millennium bug?

Although it's written in black and white "there may be shortages", I don't think anyone reckons there'll be empty supermarkets. Probably just means you can't get your favourite pear until the afternoon, or some branches of Waitrose don't have almond croissants till tomorrow.

Springwalk · 28/02/2019 11:01

This a def a wind up. Your brexit stores will need to be used up as I don't think we are leaving in March hun Grin

TheCreativeLife · 28/02/2019 11:02

get a few lettuce seeds in, they'll be up by Easter. Yep, YABU

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 11:09

I think I'm almost at brexit bingo @TheElementsSong-please come join the fun and get you Brexittania Dictionary at the ready Grin

TakeMe2Insanity · 28/02/2019 11:10

Why don’t you both stay in your own homes, eat your own food stores and face time each other instead? What is wrong with people. Don‘t invite people if you don’t want to host. Simple.

HoppityFrog3 · 28/02/2019 11:10

LOL. YABU obviously.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 28/02/2019 11:11

I really wouldn't worry about it now. If it all goes pear shaped then cancel the visit nearer the time. I would imagine if food is difficult to get delivered to shops then fuel will be too, so that might naturally affect the visit. Or if food is limited in choice locally, you can discuss with them about them bringing food suitable for their children.

Basically, leave it all until nearer the time to discuss.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 11:11

StinkyCandle · 28/02/2019 11:14

why don't you go and visit them to eat their food and save yours?

MTGGirl · 28/02/2019 11:17

@ILoveHumanity

being rational, yes. Stockpiling only to a reasonable level. Mostly the basics (flour, chocolate, glutenfree flour, pasta, canned things).

  1. We will eat them anyway
  2. It's not about fearing that there'll be no food, it's more about making sure that I have the basics + the things I like.
  3. If there are shortages and ppl go crazy I'd rather be nice and cozy in my kitchen and bake my bread than have to wait in line for a long time....

I do think though that in a no-deal scenario we will have issues with fruit/veg/dairy/meat products. Maybe not right away, but eventually as the stocks run out and the economy hasn't corrected itself. + also factor in that the agriculture is reliant on weather, which we cannot control. Some things won't be available as it's not their natural season here....

Mitzimaybe · 28/02/2019 11:17

So you're stockpiling frozen food too if you have no room in the freezer for a few packets of fish fingers? What happens if the electricity goes off? IIRC aren't most of our electricity companies foreign-owned?

brookshelley · 28/02/2019 11:19

Well unless they’re also stockpiling, they’ll have starved to death between Mar 29 and Easter so you won’t have to host them anyway.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 28/02/2019 11:22

AIBU to find a dad In Crouch End to be a Mr Judgy pants. He says...

Collecting Alex from nursery school I watched a mum arrive with her head in her phone... minutes later she came out with her 2 year old, her head still in the phone. The kid was trying to talk to mum. She ignored him. But I guess it must have been really important for her to neglect her kid. As they say, “meet you kid with a hug not a phone”.

Crouchendmumoftwo · 28/02/2019 11:22

Ignore that!

SoupDragon · 28/02/2019 11:24

Can you not simply buy more pasta now?
