AIBU to ask family to bring their own food?

I have family visiting for Easter. I know they have been "forward purchasing" in case of shortages caused by any no-deal Brexit, as have I. Would I be unreasonable to ask then to bring their own food to avoid depleting my store? The children will eat up all my pasta and pesto in next to no time. And I don't want to waste freezer space on fish fingers, which I never eat.

It's going to be a wild Easter round at yours Grin

Omzlas · 28/02/2019 10:11

HmmHmmHmm

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 10:12

My stash wouldn't last long if we had visitors either. My children eat food like there's no tomorrow so my impressive looking treats stash won't last long at all with 4 of us. They'll be rationed. Treats in a weekend or something. Like back in the good of days Wink

That’s a troll thread isn’t it Grin

FuerzaAreaUruguay · 28/02/2019 10:13

1/10

Prettyvase · 28/02/2019 10:13

What a miserly and negative post op! Where is your generosity and good will?!

There are plenty of British farmers and fishermen who will be happy to sell you potatoes, carrots, eggs, fish etc at very good value so why don't you just make something? Hmm

IHateUncleJamie · 28/02/2019 10:14

Wait, are people ACTUALLY stockpiling food? Seriously? I thought you were joking, OP

TheFaerieQueene · 28/02/2019 10:14

Perhaps you should set up a weight loss clinic this Easter instead. 😂

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 28/02/2019 10:14

Never mind the pesto OP, it’s Easter! You need to stockpile creme eggs!!

ILoveHumanity · 28/02/2019 10:15

But on a serious note , are people actually stocking up on food before brexit ?!! I know some overly pessimistic people are, but are the actual level headed people doing that too now ?!

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/02/2019 10:15

You are wanting to ask people to bring their own food?? Read that back, you cant be serious! Dear God YABVU. Of course you dont do that! If you dont want to feed them dont have them to stay - simple!

AuntieCJ · 28/02/2019 10:16

Hilarious. Can't be real. Good joke, OP.

SparklySneakers · 28/02/2019 10:18

Yes, people are stockpiling a supply for their families.

Some people are very worried about shortages and price rises which were confirmed as highly likely in guidance issued by the government on Tuesday.

Make sure they bring their tasty pets with them as well.

Just so they aren't left alone.....

borntobequiet · 28/02/2019 10:27

I am worried -this Government Impact Assessment has just been published. It's not Armageddon, but does say there could be problems:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-47379308

"However, at the time of year we will be leaving the EU, the UK is particularly reliant on the short Channel crossings for fresh fruit and vegetables.
"In the absence of other action from government, some food prices are likely to increase, and there is a risk that consumer behaviour could exacerbate, or create, shortages in this scenario.
"As of February 2019, many businesses in the food supply industry are unprepared for a no-deal scenario."

@ILoveHumanity - But on a serious note , are people actually stocking up on food before brexit ?!!

Any one with any sense keeps a stockpile for events that are likely to cause shortages. So, if you live rurally you should keep a stockpile in case of extreme weather in winter. If you live on a small island, you would probably have a bigger stockpile in case of bad weather preventing the supply ferry docking.

If you live in the UK and you don't know whether there will be interruptions to the supply line after Brexit, you should keep a stockpile. It's the same as taking out holiday or home insurance. Hopefully, you won't need it but if you do, at least you're covered.

Stockpiling means buying a bit extra of the stuff you normally buy in your regular shopping over an extended period. It does not mean panic buying the day before the storm hits or the day before Brexit happens. Panic buying, not stockpiling, is what causes problems.

HennyPennyHorror · 28/02/2019 10:29

What? If you WEREN'T stockpiling, you'd get in extra for the duration of their visit surely? Confused Just do that...they won't "Eat up" all of your pasta then.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/02/2019 10:29

I am absolutely stockpiling useful items in my garage, yes. But if I am having someone to stay I just buy more food....

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 28/02/2019 10:29

But on a serious note , are people actually stocking up on food before brexit

Yes, all the indications are that there is a good chance of reduced supplies, delayed supplies and substantial price hikes. Plenty of people are trying to protect themselves against the impact by storing some items. Because of where my DH works, information he has access to, he has specifically requested that I create a small stockpile of some items. If the worst case does not come to fruition, not a problem, we will eat it anyway.

ScatteredMama82 · 28/02/2019 10:30

You do realise that we manufacture food in the UK right? Ok you might not have parma ham, prosecco and chorizo for a while but we're not going to starve! Just feed your family. If it worries you that much go and buy some more pasta and pesto today.

ADropofReality · 28/02/2019 10:32

On balance, OP, I would have the family over, but remember: if your grandmother or any other member of your family should die from contamination whilst in the shelter, put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes.

(The air attack warning sounds like - This is the sound - When you hear the air attack warning - You and your family must take cover...)

Believability · 28/02/2019 10:32

Just no words OP.

doIreallyneedto · 28/02/2019 10:33

@ScatteredMama82 - You do realise that we manufacture food in the UK right?

You do realise that the UK is nowhere near self-sufficient in food and cannot possibly feed anything near the full population, right?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/02/2019 10:33

Asking guests to bring their own food is downright rude.

Hollowvictory · 28/02/2019 10:34

If there's a shortage of fresh fruit how will a stockpile of pesto help?
