Have any of you actually seen it for yourself? Or is it an internet hoax?

sagradafamiliar Wow, so much misinformation there.

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 27/02/2019 23:43

Sorry but in our case school has caused the damage. I’d never heard of it and I believe parents should be notified about what they’re going to address as important. My children don’t have full internet access so would never have come across it by themselves. Not everybody uses You Tube as a babysitter.

Vulnerable people, and this includes all children, should not have to hear about this without their parents being forewarned and forearmed. I was caught out today when DS1 came charging out of school in a panic.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:45

I'd prefer it third hand smell because at least then I can say it's just silly playground gossip and their friends are wrong. To hear that shit from a voice of authority is enough to scare the crap out of any child/they will believe it because children don't think that adults lie.
A general talk on internet safety is what I'd have preferred (which we do all the time anyway).

Smellbellina · 27/02/2019 23:47

Do you think the children don’t talk just ? They do, a lot! You don’t always have the option of sending out letters and having a meeting before addressing a real concern over what some children are telling their peers. If you don’t trust the adults that care for your child 30+ hours a week you shouldn’t keep them enrolled there.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:50

I actually haven't heard one child mention the momo challenge, it's adults who have all gone hysterical over it. You only have to look at these threads and on FB ect

Smellbellina · 27/02/2019 23:50

I doubt very much any school has told any child that there is a chicken woman on the internet that will cause them to self harm/harm others/kill themselves or they will come through the screen and kill them. If you believe that you need to home school.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:53

Make your mind up, smell. On one hand you're backing schools up and on the other saying home school instead as the teachers can't be trusted.
My school sent an email out outlining what I said a few posts up. Hence why I'm pulling my child out of the 'talk'.

Smellbellina · 27/02/2019 23:53

Yup they have, I saw it about a year ago and forgot about it. By registration this morning it was the hot topic. On the way to assembly I heard children in other classes talking about it and telling teachers about it. It seemed to blow up over night, not in school, but in some homes, those children then bought it into school. It’s not possible or responsible to ignore it.

Smellbellina · 27/02/2019 23:55

No I’m quite clearly saying if you don’t trust the adults who have care of your child 30+ hours a week to deal with something like this, you should rethink leaving them in their care.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:55

I'm ignoring it because it's daft, irrelevant bullshit and I think it's irresponsible to promulgate the idea that a made up creature is somehow hacking into cartoon videos on YouTube and giving out dangerous instructions.

slashlover · 27/02/2019 23:56

PhillyD video calling it a hoax.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:57

That's a bit pathetic and extreme, smell. Pulling my child out of the planned talk and explaining why will suffice.

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 27/02/2019 23:57

My friends nephew had Momo appear in a Peppa Pig video yesterday so it is real. The mother was horrified and the kid was scared.

Our school have sent home a letter today. I do think it’s been overhyped though. I keep hiding all the stories on FB because the image scares me Grin

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 27/02/2019 23:58

Parents are criticised all the time for delegating to teachers. I’m my case, I support my school and the curriculum but I do believe that in matters such as this parents should be consulted first. We have to authorise every trip, sex education class, etc. My vulnerable child’s mental health has taken a blow over what is actually a hoax. I wasn’t prepared as I’d never heard of it. My DS picked up on that and it freaked him out even more.

sagradafamiliar · 28/02/2019 00:01

Tell your friend to stop lying just because it's trending, hamster.

slashlover · 28/02/2019 00:04

Ask them to go into the history and send you the link then.

Epanoui · 28/02/2019 00:06

DD had had another child mention it to her before I was aware. She's 12. I took it as an opportunity to reiterate advice about never communicating or connecting with people you don't know in real life over the internet. And yet here I am on MN. Ho hum.

Smellbellina · 28/02/2019 00:07

Settle in for the long haul sag once this has blown over it’ll be something else. It simply isn’t possible for schools to refuse to engage with it, a) because the children talk and whip each other into a frenzy and b) they have a duty of care.

Smellbellina · 28/02/2019 00:08

@Epanoui 😂
But you’re doing it safely! Presumably

Epanoui · 28/02/2019 00:20

Haha, yes. But you know, we give our kids this advice and I am absolutely communicating with people I don't know over the internet! And have done for some years, approaching decades in fact, and nothing bad has happened!

NunoGoncalves · 28/02/2019 00:24

It's kind of crazy how many people are saying it must be real because their friend's/relative's friend or relative has seen it. But nobody can post or find a single video of it. Seems like bullshit to me.

But anyway, when it came up with my friends, my response was "all the more reason to just use netflix and never youtube... just in case of stuff like this". Then I thought, what if this whole thing has been orchestrated by the Netflix marketing team?! Shock

YY my friend's brother's wife says the sky is falling in! and something about a chicken........
the world is about to end people!

Aragog · 28/02/2019 07:30

Can I add that not all schools have sent out warnings. I haven't sent out such information- I'm curriculum leader for computing and run our social media. The children haven't mentioned it (their infant school age) and neither have we. I have done reading and some research and decided that this is not something we need to be teaching and speaking about, especially at this time.

Somewhereovertheroad · 28/02/2019 07:33

My three teenagers had all seen it or were aware of it.

I think Scottish Peppa pig is a bigger threat to younger children.

Somewhereovertheroad · 28/02/2019 07:36

Ds came across it on Roblox. I have it restricted to younger age and no chat.
