To wonder if Momo actually exists

Have any of you actually seen it for yourself? Or is it an internet hoax?

It is bollocks. DS2 could happily spend 12 hours a day on YouTube if I didn't drag him off, and it had never 'popped up'. If you are stupid enough to search for it you will find it, just as you will find 'proof that ghosts exist' or 'proof the moon landings were faked'.

But everyone will know that their brother's sister's mate's dog's grandma's next door neighbour knows someone it happened to so it must be real.

OopsUpsideYourBed · 27/02/2019 20:12

My son saw it in a Minecraft video on Kids YouTube. He had nightmares.

F*cking idiots putting it into kids videos. Angry

ShawshanksRedemption · 27/02/2019 20:16

The sculpture that is being used to represent Momo was created by a Japanese artist. Whoever is behind the hoax has used a photo of the sculpture.

Momo as such doesn't exist, other than in people's imaginations.

Link?

Justanotherlurker · 27/02/2019 20:16

It's a HOAX. A great big internet hoax.

Not the first and not the last it's now become a meme that people are slipping into videos.

OopsUpsideYourBed · 27/02/2019 20:16

Just to add, no 'challenge' stuff in what he saw. Just the creepy face.

Grace212 · 27/02/2019 20:23

I'm confused

if hackers are using it to collect data, then it's real?

I don't mean Momo is real, I mean "people putting an image into online content" is real. So when people say it's a hoax, what do they mean?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 27/02/2019 20:24

Agree with a previous poster though that face is bloody freaky Confused

mamaslave18 · 27/02/2019 20:24

I searched kids you tube looking for the videos posted on Facebook that apparently had been hacked. I couldn’t find anything.

My 3 year old saw the Momo face ( from a news report) and found it hysterically funny. She thought it was a monkey. She didn’t seem to have come across it before and watched lots of Peppa Pig videos while she was very unwell for a couple of weeks. Obviously we supervise to a degree but I do start to tune it out after a while.

tierraJ · 27/02/2019 20:24

I looked up Momo online & you can buy the game for $1.99 if you really wanted to. It's in the horror genre.

SmashedMug · 27/02/2019 20:25

It's a load of shit. Anyone can look at their viewing history yet no one shares a video where it's spliced in? It's always in "a" peppa video, in "a" minecraft video. Never a specific one.

Justanotherlurker · 27/02/2019 20:26

if hackers are using it to collect data, then it's real?

No hackers are using it to collect data, its ramping up the hysteria.

Also "hackers" is the wrong term.

I don't mean Momo is real, I mean "people putting an image into online content" is real. So when people say it's a hoax, what do they mean?

It's become a meme so people are now putting the image into videos because if the initial hysteria.

cardibach · 27/02/2019 20:26

thinkfast the media reported and police sent our warnings about the Blue Whale Challenge too. Also a hoax.

ASatisfyingThump · 27/02/2019 20:28

School sent a message home today about it because some kids were talking about it. I know DS1 hasn't seen it though, he'd scream his head off if that appeared on the screen, it even freaks me out. I just told him that some nasty people are trying to scare kids and if anything pops up on his YouTube videos that shouldn't be there or scares him, he has to pause the video and bring it to me so I can check and report it if necessary. He doesn't have a phone or social media though, just a kindle fire with buckets of parental controls in place. I'm hoping that's enough.

Nicknacky · 27/02/2019 20:29

Aren’t the police just putting out general internet safety info on the back of momo? Rather than specific momo advice.

They can’t get to the bottom of something that probably hasn’t happened!

Frequency · 27/02/2019 20:33

Momo exists as in it an art installation in a Japanese fetish museum. The Momo challenge has been around for a year and is primarily bored teenagers trying to scare each other. No-one committed suicide because of Momo. A few news sites reported on a suicide in South America but no link to Momo was proven. It's blown up because of the media hysteria and is now being used by trolls. If the media had ignored it/laughed at it like the teens who got messages from Momo over a year ago did the trolls wouldn't be aware of it and it would faded into nothingness.

YouTube has not been hacked. Nor has Fortnite or Minecraft or any other platform and using YouTube Kids is not now and never has been a replacement for parental supervision. The public upload to YouTube Kids and can literally upload anything on there as long as the thumbnail and keywords meet YouTube's criteria. Anyone allowing their child to watch YouTube kids without supervision needs some serious internet safety lessons.

caughtinanet · 27/02/2019 20:35

I'm in the load of rubbish category, why are the media buying into something with no evidence?

gwenneh · 27/02/2019 20:36

Because it's trending, that's why. If it's what people are talking about, then the media are going to ride that wave.

Grace212 · 27/02/2019 20:36

@Justanotherlurker

I was looking at the BBC article that was linked, which contains this

"A police officer said Momo was clearly run by hackers who are looking for information"

so is that wrong as well?

to be clear, I'm not worried about anything, but quite fascinated by the whole urban myth thing, so just wondering what bit exactly is thought to be a hoax.

Justanotherlurker · 27/02/2019 20:38

@Frequency

Exactly, youtube kids has had many real issues with stuff like elsagate etc, this Momo stuff is just a meme and always has been.

There is far worse stuff on tumblr etc for teens, although admittedly they are going through a root and branch clean out of very questionable content.

YouTube has been hacked and it's coming up when kids are watching it it's on YouTube kids. 2 kids have killed themselves in America because of it, it's a real thing

Do you have a proper source for that claim?

Hellokittymania · 27/02/2019 20:41

What is this exactly? Like what does it look like? Sorry I’m visually impaired and I just learned about this today. Momo is the word for a zombie in Filipino, is this a zombie type a thing?

Tulipvase · 27/02/2019 20:41

Someone in my son’s class put a note in the Worry Box about it (he’s 8). The class then talked about it. He consequently came home and googled it. He’s now in bed with his brother as he’s terrified of dreaming about it.

He hadn’t heard of Momo before today.

Frequency · 27/02/2019 20:41

'Hackers' could be using Momo to try to gain passwords/personal info from people but it's no more a threat than the Arabian Prince who keeps emailing people promising them eleventy million dollars if they'll only send him their sort code, account number, address, DOB, national insurance number and marital status and oh, if they could pay $100 admin fee that would be great too.

Anyone who sends personal information to a picture of sculpture because it claims to have the ability to suck their blood/kill their family/curse them if they don't probably shouldn't be on the internet. No-one can hack you by sending you a picture of Momo. That's nonsense.

Aragog · 27/02/2019 20:43

I think its irresponsible of the BBC to had added that page tbh. It goes against what all the proper Online Safety sites are stating.

The media frenzy over it will just mean people will try and add the images on videos more now.
