Or are these forums actually set up as a 'den of vipers'?

Mumsnet forums are crap. The format is so old! Even free blogs allow you to;

  1. thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP. I'm supposed to remember the spelling of a random user I agree with and @ them? Bollocks.
  2. edit posts so you can correct inevitable typos and...
  3. so the OP can add edits of pertinent info so responders don't have to trawl through for updates
  4. RTFT?!?!?! Nowhere else on the internet do we have that bollocks! Upvote, downvote technology should push the most relevant and helpful comments to the top.
  5. avatars so you have some chance of remembering who people are. Come on that's absolutely basic.

That's why AIBU is such a pile on [pile just autocorrected to 'polenta'?!?!], why is it so crap?

For the uninitiated I. E. Me

RiverTam · 27/02/2019 13:57

guess I haven't been following you around the site enough, Female! I barely know anyone who's ever heard of him!

FemalePersonator · 27/02/2019 14:18

Tam, you have been missing out on my wisdom! Grin

RiverTam · 27/02/2019 14:28

but not Tom's, which is something!

Chloemol · 27/02/2019 14:36

So don’t comment then. Byeeee

CrazyCrunk · 27/02/2019 14:37

Have you tried a solicitor? You should get a free half hour for this project.

JaneJeffer · 27/02/2019 14:37

thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP.
What does this mean?

JassyRadlett · 27/02/2019 14:44

So basically, the OP wants the forums to be redesigned for the lazy and egocentric who can’t be arsed to read a few highlighted posts and just want to broadcast their opinion and gather upvotes?

Bugger all to do with wanting a conversation then....

averystrangeweek · 27/02/2019 14:44

The rest of the internet is thataway >>>>>>>>>>>>>

Byeeee.

CabbageHippy · 27/02/2019 14:48

have to admit the format could 100% be better improved & replying instead of the weird @ thing would be better as OP said

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/02/2019 14:52

Tell mnhq if you you’re happy?

baddayattheoffice · 27/02/2019 15:04

Don't know if anyone else has said this already because I haven't RTFT but surely the phrase is a "nest of vipers"?

Trillis · 27/02/2019 15:19

I also prefer simplicity of chronological thread and don't like the idea of up/down votes.

I'm also happy with lack of editing, so people can't change what they've written and then deny what they said previously. However I would be ok with a limited time edit (max 15 mins) so people could correct typos etc, or add to their op if they realise just after they have posted that they have missed something out.

Sometimes on other forums replies don't make sense if the OP has changed after replies have been received.

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 15:39

OP, I guess it is better not to post sensible and reasonable suggestions in AIBU. Despite the claim in the description of it, it often turns into a fight club.

The vipers and their nastiness have been out in force on this thread, just proving your point about them.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/02/2019 15:49

Ah! So a viper is a poster who quite likes the place just as it is and doesn't want to FaceTweetInstaThingy. Worse, they say so... en masse!

Yeah! Count me in! CuriousViper, that's me!

CheshireChat · 27/02/2019 15:59

I agree with everything ALargeGinPlease said, except for the actual Gin part.

In regards to the edit function, one of the forums I used to be on both used to tell you that a post had been edited and you could also add the reason you've edited the post in the first place.

I'd also like to see how many posts everyone has as I'm nosey.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/02/2019 18:45

What a load of bollocks! People just disagreed!

I’m so bored with posters claiming everyone is ‘nasty’ just because they dare to say an OP is wrong without sugar-coating it.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/02/2019 19:03

I don’t think people are allowed to discuss or disagree these days. People get awfully upset and traumatised.

The80sweregreat · 27/02/2019 19:05

It's ok as it is.

Bohbell · 27/02/2019 19:08

Lol at this! You are right OP, it does cause ‘rounding’ behaviour. But it’s the only social media apart from linked in i do and has been for fifteen years so there’s just something about it i 💕

borntobequiet · 27/02/2019 19:18

Dens are for thieves. Or iniquities. Haven’t RTFT.

earlyrisingcat · 27/02/2019 19:37

I like it as it is. And edit button would be good though.

earlyrisingcat · 27/02/2019 19:45

Never been on reddit in my life.

SmallFastPenguin · 27/02/2019 19:48

Its how we like it 🐍. Simple, low tech, anonymous and slightly vicious.

HoppityFrog3 · 27/02/2019 19:50

I like it here, but do agree with several of the OP's points.

  1. Edit button for typos would be nice.

  2. It would be great to do polls.

  3. It would be nice to be able to quote people.

If I could just pick one, it would be an edit button. Even if it just allowed 5 minutes for you to do it (like digital spy does.)

No need for avatars really. And I like it that's it's easy to namechange, so people can't throw your posting history in your face.

And mixing the posts about to put the most 'popular' or 'liked' ones at the top, and create a conversation type thing, sounds terrible. No need to highlight any 'popular' posts either. Several forums I have been on have a 'like' button on peoples posts, and it's awful because it creates cliques, and people only liking posts of people they like/get on with.

There are some nasty catty vipers on here, just waiting to pounce, and have a go at ANYone, but there are lots of lovely people too. (More nice than not.) I have read some lovely replies on a couple of threads this past few days.

One where a woman got no acknowledgement of her 60th birthday from her family and friends, and one where a young mother with 2 small kiddies, had a horribly controlling husband who criticised everything she did, and she felt she enjoyed herself way more without him, and felt she needed to get out of the marriage...

There is some wonderful support on here, and lots of laughs... Smile

Threads about the same subject are annoying though. I have seen about half a dozen age-gap threads this past week alone!

I do find having to 'read the full thread' quite annoying, as I quite often can't be arsed to read 250-300 posts!!!

So quite often, when a thread is 10-12 pages in, I won't bother with it, as I can't be bothered to spend half an hour reading all the posts. Plus, by that point, what I would have posted/wanted to post has already been said! (Often many times!)
