Or are these forums actually set up as a 'den of vipers'?

Mumsnet forums are crap. The format is so old! Even free blogs allow you to;

  1. thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP. I'm supposed to remember the spelling of a random user I agree with and @ them? Bollocks.
  2. edit posts so you can correct inevitable typos and...
  3. so the OP can add edits of pertinent info so responders don't have to trawl through for updates
  4. RTFT?!?!?! Nowhere else on the internet do we have that bollocks! Upvote, downvote technology should push the most relevant and helpful comments to the top.
  5. avatars so you have some chance of remembering who people are. Come on that's absolutely basic.

That's why AIBU is such a pile on [pile just autocorrected to 'polenta'?!?!], why is it so crap?

Oh Reddit is just awful, had a look at it once and couldn’t work it out at all.

differentnameforthis · 27/02/2019 07:32

Yeah but if we did it like that, it would be just like all those other boring forums, wouldn't it?

And you can have the most recent comments at the top if you want.

Also, you know you don't have to stay, don't you, @applesisapple5?

differentnameforthis · 27/02/2019 07:33

And I can see your responses, because I have them highlighted.

appointmentsaretheworst · 27/02/2019 07:34

I really really like the format. I really dislike going into other forums and seeing a million quotes in the responses before I see the actual response. Reddit does my head in for all the little 'responses' to the side and clicking to see more. Can't be doing with it.

I'm on mobile app so all I do is click @ and I get the usernames pop up. Not hard.

BiglyBadgers · 27/02/2019 07:35

I hate forums where posts move about with up/down voting. It loses the context of the post within the wider conversation and makes it hard to know what you've seen or not seen when you come back tomorrow catch up.

I also like the fact that without the reply function it keeps the focus on the OP and discourages sidetracking. It keeps each thread a unit rather than it splitting off into different discussions. MN is a Question and answer format at its core and the simple format encourages that way of working.

NotTheDada · 27/02/2019 07:38

Nope, can't stand the format of Reddit. I want to read responses to an OP in chronological order. Often time the most upvoted comment doesn't make sense in the context of the OP or it references a comment that is buried under 60 billion tangential conversations.

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 07:38

I'd agree with you, OP. These forums need updating. I've been on plenty of others where you can edit posts and there are no issues with it.

No, I don't intend to fuck off to Reddit. Dreadful place. I want it to improve here.

Ragwort · 27/02/2019 07:38

I love Mumsnet, been here nearly 19 years, I can’t comment on other forums as I don’t use them, sometimes have a quick look and can’t even work out how to use them. I don’t complain about them, why should I? They clearly work for their users and Mumsnet works for us.

And I disagree we are a ‘bunch of vipers’, we are a strong community of articulate women (& a few men) who aren’t afraid of robust discussion.

FemalePersonator · 27/02/2019 07:38

YABU.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 27/02/2019 07:41

I loathe forums where you have to click to expand everyone else's comments etc.

I loathe avatars (where there are avatars, sparkly tickers will surely follow).

I don't want up or down-voting, this ain't the Mail Online.

I do agree that it's terrible you are being forced against your will to post on a site you hate, though. Thoughts and prayers.

ArmchairTraveller · 27/02/2019 07:43

I would like the opportunity to edit my own posts, but apart from that, I’ve liked the format here for over a decade.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/02/2019 07:44

No, I don't intend to fuck off to Reddit. Dreadful place. I want it to improve here.

But the OP wants to change MN so that it’s more like the forums you say you hate. So how would that work?

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/02/2019 07:45

I like that you can’t edit posts - it means when someone is an arsehole they can’t cover it up. I like the format. I’m a prolific poster here. If you don’t like it, you could FOTTFSOF?

hippipotamiwantstoloseapound · 27/02/2019 07:47

I have been here for 12 ish years.
The @ thing to reply to a poster has snuck in recently. I don't like it. Just type their name (or the first few letters of) if you want to address to them specifically.
The current format allows me to see OP's post and replies as they are highlighted in blue.
Conversation flows just fine.

And it is nest of vipers...

Darkstar4855 · 27/02/2019 07:48

Ok, bye then.

Asta19 · 27/02/2019 07:49

I like the simple format here. However the one thing I do agree on is editing. I wrote a post ages ago, that I had written badly in the first place, it came across a bit wrong and not how I meant. So of course I got nasty replies. I had to actually beg MNHQ to remove it, and that I don’t agree with. We should have control of our own posts.

HamiltonCork · 27/02/2019 07:50

I’ve been here for 15 yrs and like it the way it is.

Aberforthsgoat · 27/02/2019 07:51

Just because other sites and platforms have the functionality, why do they all have to be the same?

I too hate Reddit, it’s a jumbled mess and half the time posts only have a few replies - I’m convinced it’s because of this.

Mumsnet is easy to use as far as I’m concerned and while like buttons might be fun there’s no real need in my view.

Drogosnextwife · 27/02/2019 07:52

Love mumsnet the way it is thanks. You sound lazy!

Aberforthsgoat · 27/02/2019 07:52

@asta19 I do agree about the editing function, I’ve never understood why we can’t have that

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 07:53

FamilyofAliens, no. I would like a time limited edit button for stuff like correction of typos. I know from other recent threads that I am certainly not alone there. It has been mooted on Site Stuff etc. as a potential update, as have other things such as OP is very reasonably suggesting.

OP, I think that is generally the place to make such suggestions. Not AIBU. AIBU is the place to get pulled apart. I hope you have your rhino hide and hard hat on.

Prequelle · 27/02/2019 07:54

I first joined mumsnet about 8 years ago, stayed for a bit sodded off and came back now I'm pregnant. This 'nest of vipers' shite has been said time and time again, I don't get why people don't leave if they aren't happy.

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 07:57

It isn't entirely a nest of vipers. There are vipers here though, who just seem to come onto some threads to stick the boot in and argue for the sake of it.

Many may well be trolls. Some are not though.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/02/2019 07:59

Didn't we have this exact complain a week or so ago?

Yes, a short lived Edit button would be useful for typos and mispes, but otherwise, it's good as it is.

If a Like button r simialr got added I would have to seriously reconsider posting... I don't want to FaceRedTwInst
