Or are these forums actually set up as a 'den of vipers'?

Mumsnet forums are crap. The format is so old! Even free blogs allow you to;

  1. thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP. I'm supposed to remember the spelling of a random user I agree with and @ them? Bollocks.
  2. edit posts so you can correct inevitable typos and...
  3. so the OP can add edits of pertinent info so responders don't have to trawl through for updates
  4. RTFT?!?!?! Nowhere else on the internet do we have that bollocks! Upvote, downvote technology should push the most relevant and helpful comments to the top.
  5. avatars so you have some chance of remembering who people are. Come on that's absolutely basic.

That's why AIBU is such a pile on [pile just autocorrected to 'polenta'?!?!], why is it so crap?

OP posts:

Agree.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/02/2019 09:06

You lost me when you described being expected to read the full thread as ‘bollocks’ (plus the overdose of punctuation to express your horror and disbelief at the very idea). There’s nothing worse than someone chiming in on Page 15 of a thread saying ‘Haven’t RTFT but couldn't you...’ before suggesting something the OP explained on page 2 was impossible. Why are these people so desperate for their little say? What makes them so blindly convinced that their comment will be a Road to Damascus level revelation that crossed no one else’s minds? THAT’S bollocks.

But if it's so bad why are you still here

Might I suggest a hobby to fill your time so you don't have to spend it looking for forums that you don't like and trying to change them to be the same as the ones you do.

What an odd thing to do

chipsandgin · 27/02/2019 09:14

you know you can leave, right? Or are they holding you hostage in MNHQ?

CallMeSirShotsFired · 27/02/2019 09:15

Ifailed Agree.

Completely agree that the format is why OP's get piled on. Often, they ask if they're being unreasonable and have a nice conversation where they accept they are and make a decision on what to do next then you get pages and pages of people ranting at the OP having missed the updates.

I't all very well and good saying people should RTFT but since they clearly don't, surely it's wise to improve the site. I don't understand why threads like this get so much hate. People are just suggesting things to make everyone's lives easier, it's not a personal attack. Most sites provide an "old site" view when they update so it's entirely optional.

userschmoozer · 27/02/2019 09:21

There's a button at the top of the page you can click that will take you to Mumsnet HQ comments on a thread; maybe they could add one for all of OP's comments.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/02/2019 09:22

What, in addition to being able to make it a specifc colour so it and out?

userschmoozer · 27/02/2019 09:23

Well the main problem seems to be that people don't read 15 pages and miss the updates. I can see how if you're on mobile its a PITA.

BiglyBadgers · 27/02/2019 09:25

I have the OPs comments highlighted and can then just do a quick scroll through to check what they've said.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 27/02/2019 09:26

Well. This thread's going to end well ...

BiglyBadgers · 27/02/2019 09:27

I think people just like to get their knickers in a knot and will do so no matter what, even if that means conveniently ignoring updates from the OP. That's people for you. Changing the format isn't going to change that.

ThePollutedShadesOfPemberley · 27/02/2019 09:27

It's the easiest thing in the world to put things like I agree with UserNo3 though. Just liking and voting is lazy.

The lovely thing about this site is that you get interaction and the written word. Thought has been put in.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 27/02/2019 09:56

@Topsyt I assumed it was! I was following the thread live, soo funny

Cornettoninja · 27/02/2019 10:39

Tell you a feature I would like, on the something awful forums (many moons ago) you could filter the thread to just read the OP posts. It was great for longer threads where you just wanted to catch up.

Might have a wander (viper slither) over the site stuff....

Margotshypotheticaldog · 27/02/2019 13:02

I haven't read the full thread.
But I also agree.
😂

LittleMissMarker · 27/02/2019 13:08

YABU because MumsNet is a nest of vipers. Vipers don't live in dens anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2019 13:12

So much moaning. Why do some people want to make MN exactly the same as every other internet forum?

It's good that there are loads of other forums that might meet the OP's exacting standards out there.

Mmmhmmm · 27/02/2019 13:23

It's a nest of vipers because you can change names on a whim whenever you like...also it's the internet.

FemalePersonator · 27/02/2019 13:45

To paraphrase the American satirist Tom Lehrer: MN is like a sewer. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

RiverTam · 27/02/2019 13:53

wow, that's the first time I've seen Tom Lehrer referenced on an MN thread! Exciting times.

FemalePersonator · 27/02/2019 13:54

I've reference him before, River.

SurgeHopper · 27/02/2019 13:54

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/02/2019 13:55

I don't understand the OP. Moaning about the tech (yes it would be useful to be able to edit but then the threads would get confusing - you can always ask a moderator to make changes) - but what does that have to do with the users?

Avatars? Are we kids?
