AIBU?

Or are these forums actually set up as a 'den of vipers'?

Mumsnet forums are crap. The format is so old! Even free blogs allow you to;

  1. thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP. I'm supposed to remember the spelling of a random user I agree with and @ them? Bollocks.
  2. edit posts so you can correct inevitable typos and...
  3. so the OP can add edits of pertinent info so responders don't have to trawl through for updates
  4. RTFT?!?!?! Nowhere else on the internet do we have that bollocks! Upvote, downvote technology should push the most relevant and helpful comments to the top.
  5. avatars so you have some chance of remembering who people are. Come on that's absolutely basic.

That's why AIBU is such a pile on [pile just autocorrected to 'polenta'?!?!], why is it so crap?

ODFOD

oh wait, don’t tell me....you also hate the abbreviations?

Don’t let the door smack you round the arse on your way out Hmm

CSIblonde · 27/02/2019 08:00

It's nest of vipers, not den. Misses point of thread.

ShannonRockallMalin · 27/02/2019 08:00

Overall I like the linear format here, and I’m reasonably new to MN. I find Reddit very confusing and unwieldy.

I do think a time limited edit button would be good though, it’s hard to avoid typos sometimes especially if posting from your phone.

But I find it refreshingly uncluttered here, no flashing signatures and silly avatars.

AgathaF · 27/02/2019 08:02

So now you've said your piece are you going to swan off into the sunset to a better forum? Please?

hippipo I really dislike the @ thing that's arrived here within the last year or two, too.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 27/02/2019 08:04

An edit post function would be really nice though...

SaturdayNext · 27/02/2019 08:05

1) thread replies to get a CONVERSATION going rather than every person responding to the OP.

I bloody hate that. It gets so confusing and disjointed. I'm on FB forums which are primarily there to support people, so when I'm thinking of posting a piece of information, I skim through what's already been posted to check I'm not duplicating. I hate it when someone's gone meandering off on a separate conversation because you see 50 posts on that sub-thread and realise you still need to check whether the piece of information has popped up in that conversation. I like a nice, linear discussion, me.

TanteRose · 27/02/2019 08:06

Bless.

It's such a shame there are no others parenting sites and social network sites out there.

birdsdestiny · 27/02/2019 08:06

I know. Imagine being Justine and inventing such a rubbish forum. Thank god I didn't do that, where would I be now.

LuckyLou7 · 27/02/2019 08:09

You don't have to post here or even read here. Try Dogs Sleeping forum for avatars and arguments.

FlibbertyGiblets · 27/02/2019 08:13

Oh noes we're doing it all wrong, people. We must improve to make MN all samey samey just like all the others, quick smart lickety-spit.

Or, um, no ta.

ThePants999 · 27/02/2019 08:16

There are legitimate reasons not to use a threaded format. But the inability to edit your posts isn't a style choice, it's just a missing feature that's been totally standard on forums for, like, forever.

Bumblebeezy · 27/02/2019 08:25

I think vipers are sort of part and parcel of some MN boards. I think the cut-throat nature of AIBU is actually what many people like about it (myself included, to a point).

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 27/02/2019 08:27

If you could edit your own posts there would be no funny typos such as snapped and farted

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 08:31

Was "snapped and farted' a typo? I agree that it was a classic if it was. Grin

I loved that thread. I don't think the OP of it even acknowledged the error, let alone showed any humour about it or inclination to explain it..Grin

PorpentinaScamander · 27/02/2019 08:33

I like mumsnet precisely because of its simplicity. I like that the posts are in chronological order. I like that there are no avatars.

I just wish people would quote someone when they are agreeing/disagreeing with them so I know what they are agreeing/disagreeing with rather than just using the @ function

longwayoff · 27/02/2019 08:36

Bye

echt · 27/02/2019 08:45

Porpentina, so that's what the # means. Lazy feckers.

RiverTam · 27/02/2019 08:46

I can see the OP's posts, they're highlighted

you don't have to @ people, in fact most MNers hate it (I've switched off my email notifications so there's no more point @ing me than just bolding my name)

I like the simplicity, I hate forums where conversations literally split off, it's impossible to follow what's going on

DoneLikeAKipper · 27/02/2019 08:48

@Topseyt, the snapped op did come back to clarify that's exactly what they meant, because they knew exactly what kind of reaction it would have. Some bollocks about having IBS.

Whilst MN is somewhat out of date in terms of modern forums, it's not bad. I'd like a colour system for usernames (I'm sure Digital spy uses stars next to names) indicating how long a poster has been around, regardless of namechanges. That way trolls can't claim to be namechangers just by spouting off other crap troll threads like snapped and fucking farted.

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 08:49

No point in @ing me either. I don't have email notifications (don't want them, they are a nuisance) and it won't get through.

ALargeGinPlease · 27/02/2019 08:53

I'm another "viper" who actually like the simplicity of a simple, chronological thread.
The only things i would like "improved" is the addition of a 2 minute edit, for typos, but not so that the op can change their story if the replies aren't going the way they want.
The ability to just read the op's updates, without trawling through the whole thread looking for 'their' colour updates.
And, on the app, a search facility within a thread to find a particular user, for when someone posts e.g. "username [grin ] ", so i can easily find what the funny comment was, rather than scrolling and skimming looking for that particular user's comment.
I've tried reddit, but found it so confusing with all the sub comments and lack of chronological order, i returned to MN.

Topseyt · 27/02/2019 08:54

Donelikeakipper, ah, thanks. I missed that bit of that thread. It was very long.

I do agree generally with the rest of your post too. There are things that could be tried.

I have OP posts and my own colour coded. Not others.

Calvinsmam · 27/02/2019 08:58

Of course you don’t have to remember a random username, you just do this apple

bibbitybobbityyhat · 27/02/2019 08:58

I wish Mumsnet could literally just put a rocket underneath threads that have been done too often. Delete the bloody lot of them. There was an almost identical thread to this in the last week or so although, iirc, the op was rather more polite about it.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 27/02/2019 09:02

It annoys me when people post things like "Agree" on a thread which has several hundred posts already. WHAT/WHO are you agreeing with?

It does just seem rather a pointless "contribution" to the discussion.
(At least quote what you are agreeing with)
