To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

yes go back in and say you are unhappy

DS has had it really badly twice and both times he was monitored for awhile until they could see an improvement. The first time an ambulance came out (caveat he had previously had sepsis from scarlet fever) and he spent 3 hours being monitored

The other was on holiday and he got private clinic treatment where he stayed for 2 hours until he perked up and then checked him in the morning

First time he needed 2 sets of antibiotics to shift it (he had a 5 day course and went downhill rapidly after he stopped)

needthisthread · 27/02/2019 21:41

Agree with home and 999

You know 999 will send paramedics who will do the same checks as both doctors have already done, gather the history (ie child has been seen twice already) and reach the same conclusion? It's very unlikely they will take the child in, and even if they did, A&E doc is just going to send them gone again.

999 isn't a gateway to hospital admission.

Random18 · 27/02/2019 21:42

Op your son is poorly and it is very worrying for you.
Take comfort that 2 medical professionals have checked him over and both are happy that it is just a virus.

Keep an eye on him, continue to give pain relief and try and keep temp under control.
But it’s probably just something that has got to run it’s course.

And I say that as a mother who has had many visits to 111 and a couple to A&E.

Normally they do know what they are doing and if they were concerned at all would have kept him there.

Don’t be afraid to take him back if he gets worse but go him and give yourself a rest - and get off this forum as it must be stressing you out big time.

PixieBob28 · 27/02/2019 21:42

Please trust your instincts. As a mum of a 7 month old only last month I was in the same situation.

My son was smiling, was playing, but off his food and his temperature was raging. We saw the GP who thought it was a urine infection and we were sent home.

Hours later he started becoming sleepy and I could feel his heart thumping through his chest. Called an ambulance, they weren't concerned. His observations were on the high side but because he looked ok and happy A&E sent him home.

Long story short three hours later I rushed him back in and thank bloody god I did because my poor baby has sepsis and if I hadn't he would have died and not made the night.

I don't mean to scare you but he saw 6 health care professionals that day and noone apart from me spotted the signs.

It's on the rise and it's a killer. It acts fast. So if anything changes or your instincts tell you differently then keep going back. Also ask..could it be sepsis?

lickencivers · 27/02/2019 21:43

Don't go home and call 999 for bloody hell sake.... the ambulance crew will convey regardless because of age. You will be genuinely wasting an ambulance. Go back to a&e if you're concerned.

Bluemascara4 · 27/02/2019 21:45

I know that 999 isn't a gateway to hospital admission ...... I work in the NHS.

I'm saying that a child so young and to have had a high temp for this long needs a second opinion.

Gut instinct OP and you know your child x

Strugglingonagain · 27/02/2019 21:46

Goodness me what a horrible situation and so confusing. Raly hope your little one picks up quick and you get the right help and treatment if not OP xx

PixieBob28 · 27/02/2019 21:46

I know I'm posting again but honestly I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did. The young are most at risk. Ask them to do the sepsis tool for their trust. Honestly think it's that from what you've said

2birds1stone · 27/02/2019 21:47

I have just re read the nhs guidelines on fever and to be honest they are just following that.

Unless he has had a high temp for more than 5 days, dehydrated etc it's just a case of monitoring, getting him to drink and eat if possible.

There are so many colds ect around . I feel like dd and I are constantly ill .

A good way to check a temp ( basic first aid) place back of your one hand on your forehead, place back of your other hand on patients forehead. This is a good way to judge if the patient is feeling much hotter than you (provided you are of a normal temp) and also if they are clammy. You should always use the back of the hand and not the palm

Surely since you work for the NHS you would know that leaving A&E to go home and phone 999 is a massive waste of resources all round and walking back in for the second opinion would be more logical?

Bluemascara4 · 27/02/2019 21:49

I was just concerned about the possibility of sepsis.

Froglette16 · 27/02/2019 21:50

OP please go back to a&e and insist on further help. You may be tired and speechless right now but you won’t regret trying. We don’t know your child but YOU DO. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If you’re still worried about your child it’s worth trying. X

ohfourfoxache · 27/02/2019 21:53

Joining the chorus of “he needs to be seen again”.

And when you get through this I’d encourage you to complain to the practice manager and the hospital

CoperCabana · 27/02/2019 21:55

Sorry if I have missed this but has he had his urine dipped? Every time my two have had lethargy and fever, they have not let me leave until they have provided a urine sample. Which has on occasion taken some time.

Really hope you get sorted.

SinkGirl · 27/02/2019 21:56

I agree that they are following the NHS guidance from what I’ve read (which is why I didn’t take DS to hospital when he was like this).

Is there anything else - hands or feet cold, ribs pulling in when he breathes, anything else they didn’t pick up on?

I do think they should have checked his urine and maybe some blood tests since you were there.

Do you have a partner? When my twins were very little they got really sick, hospital sent us home and said it was bronchiolitis and would get worse in a few days and come back then - DH and I slept in shifts and watched them round the clock. I would do the same tonight and get to the GP first thing, or call 999 if he develops any of the red flag symptoms on the nhs info.

TheoriginalLEM · 27/02/2019 22:01

What you need to do is print off this thread and show them at A&E. That way they will get a proper dr to check him out!

If you hadnt posted this thread would you still be worried or would you be reassured by what the drs are telling you? If you are still worried then go back and tell them. 999 isnt appropriate and youll end up waiting ages

ememem84 · 27/02/2019 22:03

I hope he’s ok op. And that you manage to get some rest.

Has he had s flu spray? Or is he too young? (I can’t remember - Although I don’t think ds had one...)

You WHAT? oh that has made me laugh. Do you really think an A&E Dr on nights has the time or the inclination to read a mumsnet thread Hmm

Sassenach85 · 27/02/2019 22:23

Thinking of you OP, it's so stressful and frightening sometimes being Mum and I'd echo what others have said. Trust ur gut xx
