To ask how to treat a 10mo with a temp of 40.2

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 26/02/2019 23:04

Shamelessly posted here for traffic Blush

Ds2 is 10months. He hasn't been unwell, not even snotty . Yesterday afternoon at lunchtime he wouldn't eat which is unlike him. Cried and crashed out and slept most of the day and night. He had a temp of 38-39.5 all day despite regular Calpol and ibuprofen.
Today he's been the same, eating and drinking okay but sleeping longer than normal and high temps.
Still doesn't appear poorly. Isn't upset just raging hot.
He had Calpol at 6pm. Ibu at 8pm. Just been to check on him at 10.30pm before i went to bed and temp is highest yet at 40.2.
He had gone to bed happy and in a babygrow with no vest or sleeping bag.

Is a temp alone worth doing anything about
If they're not seeming poorly / rashy/ upset?

I've given him more Calpol at 10.30 but he's maxed out on his doses now for both meds in a 24hr period so I'm at a loss

My plan is currently stay awake till 11.30 Then go and check temp again to see if it's coming down. Does this sound the right thing to do?

I do hope they'll take urine and bloods and rule out the most likely infections.

SoftSheen · 27/02/2019 20:36

Good luck OP, hope you get it sorted Flowers

Imustbemad00 · 27/02/2019 20:40

You’ve been given a hard time. You’ve done nothing wrong. Hope he’s ok.

jcmayj · 27/02/2019 20:41

Good luck OP, hope your DC is okay Thanks

TheSheepofWallSt · 27/02/2019 20:43

Well done on doing the right thing OP- although I am sorry that your little boy is still poorly.

Hope you get some answers and you’re home quickly.

Uncontrolled and unexplained fever does concern medical professionals - they won’t think you’re overreacting and they won’t think you’re a fraud. You have a sick kid and you have every right to seek emergency medical attention for him.

I hope that posters who piled in to say with the certainty of hindsight “oh but MY kid was fine” understand that they’ve been hugely irresponsible-regardless of the diagnosis - especially given this is a child under 1.

OP I hope your little boy is ok, how worrying this must’ve been, it’s so hard to know what to do for the best (even with all of Mumsnet telling you) I think it would make it harder..
Making decisions based on heart, mind, gut, Mumsnet, 111, GP.
Can’t understand why some posters have to be so rude, you wouldn’t have posted if you wasn’t concerned. I prob would have gone to a+e sooner but I live only 10 mins away and I am a terrible worrier.
Hope your baby is well and gets the appropriate treatment. Flowers

Thatsnotmyotter · 27/02/2019 20:49

Hope everything is okay OP. It’s so hard to know what to do sometimes!

IHateUncleJamie · 27/02/2019 20:51

Glad you’re at A&E, OP. Thinking of you. Flowers

M0reGinPlease · 27/02/2019 20:53

HennaLights The NHS website says “do not undress your child or sponge them down to cool them – fever is a natural and healthy response to infection”

Yes it does. Earlier this year my DD had a temperature of 41. At A&E the nurses stripped her off and put a fan not directly on her, but in her vicinity. They said she just needed to get her core temperature down ASAP. I felt stupid as I still had her in a vest and pj's re the advice above. Bit contradictory isn't it?

MrsFrankCastle · 27/02/2019 20:58

.

Bluemascara4 · 27/02/2019 21:03

Also glad you're in A&E now .

Hope you're seen soon Thanks

lickencivers · 27/02/2019 21:09

Some of the advice on this thread is some what disturbing, and judgemental!!!!

I Would never bother calling 111.... because the triage system is terrible, it's either an a&e job or ride it out until the GP is open.

Good luck OP hope your LO is better soon.

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 21:20

We are out... I'm actually really not happy!
Nurse did his obs in paeds a&e.
Temp was 39.5.
Heart rate 155.
Extremely hot
She said rather than go back to waiting room she would take us straight round to the gp as she felt he would be put on antibiotics.
Saw a lady (doctor i assume... plain clothes?) Who said he doesn't have a pink throat, gp this morning shouldn't have given difflam and said that he will just have a virus and go home and let him sleep it off!
He was slumped on me, burning hot, extremely lethargic.
How can her opinion he so different to the nurse!
I asked her about his urine and she said "well you just told me he is weeing as normal. Feel free to smell his nappy tomorrow and take him back to gp if you're concerned"

That's totally shocking Shock

I would be fuming . Are you actually out / discharged from hospital??

EarlyBird39 · 27/02/2019 21:30

DONT HO HOME! Go back in there and make sure you see a doctor who will take into account the nurse advice!!!! DONT LIVE!!! Make a big scene!

EarlyBird39 · 27/02/2019 21:31

DONT LEAVE*! Blush

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 21:31

Yeah! As in in the car! I'm actually in disbelief

OP posts:
2birds1stone · 27/02/2019 21:32

Hmmmm that does seem odd. When my dd was about 8 weeks she had a slight raised temp and was weeing normal but very sleepy (more so than normal)

I was sent to hospital where they did lots of tests including a lumber puncture and urine . Turned out to be a uti . I did not notice anything different with the wee....

Have you asked how they advise you control the temp?

Whoevenknowswhattodo · 27/02/2019 21:32

Cross post... already gone. My mum is saying get home and call 999

OP posts:
Froglette16 · 27/02/2019 21:33

I hope your DC is getting better. Don’t listen to negativity. It’s better to go to a&e and be sure of what’s wrong than not going. Little people can’t express what they’re feeling so sometimes the hospital is the best place to find out what’s up. I’m saying that as a mum of 2. Both have been taken to a&e for different reasons but both with high temperatures and one had to stay in for 4 days. So no, you didn’t panic. You’ve done the right thing.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 27/02/2019 21:34

OP go back in and ask for a second opinion. You know your child. The first doctor my sister saw when my niece was 3 months old and very poorly told her to go home, it was probably viral. My dad was fuming as my sister was very upset (she knew it was more than that) and another doctor noticed he was pretty irate, offered to take DN to peads to observe her, she ended up being transferred to oxford and they couldn't say if she was going to survive!! Please don't leave if you don't think he's ok.

BuildAParsnip · 27/02/2019 21:35

Ask for a second opinion

Bluemascara4 · 27/02/2019 21:38

Agree with home and 999.

Froglette16 · 27/02/2019 21:39

Cross post. This doesn’t sound great. Is there an out of hours surgery you can go to? Or can you go back to a&e and insist on a second opinion? The lethargy is what worries me along with the temperature. If you’re not happy OP trust your instinct. X
