To elope...

Ok so this isn't really an AIBU I JUST NEED TO GET IT OUT AS I AM SO EXCITED AND CANT TELL ANYONE IN RL! (So actually I'm BU for that, and the shouty capitals, sorry!)

We've booked to elope. Ceremony will be in just over three weeks (we booked and got our paperwork in at the 11th hour!), a beautiful spot miles from where we live. Nobody knows. We're just going away for the weekend with our kids and coming back married. We're not even "properly" engaged, no ring or proposal, just had a really practical discussion about wills and things now we've got kids and decided to get it done quickly and quietly. The venue is providing witnesses and everything.

I've bought a well fancy dress from the sample rail of a local boutique for a bargain, because whilst we didn't want to invite everyone and it's about the marriage and not the day I didn't want to miss out on the dress...just had the fitting appointments confirmed which has tipped me into this current frenzied excitement.

I'm so excited, I can't even think straight! It's so cheesy but my partner is my complete dream partner, even after two kids and almost a decade together we laugh daily and work as a team to face everything. He's a total dreamboat.

AIBU for being a cheesy div who is very excited by the romance of an elopement (even with two young kids)?! AWBU for not inviting anyone else?

My husband and I eloped. Best thing we ever did. No bullshit, no stress. It was a perfect day. Congratulations!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 25/02/2019 16:07

Oh good on you OP ...we did the same ..grabbed 2 witnesses off the street and it was just perfect.I do not regret a thing! Have the best day!

ShartGoblin · 25/02/2019 16:07

CONGRATULATIONS!

YANBU! Be excited, I completely agree about the dress I wouldn't want to miss out on that either. Missing out on the stress and cost of a big wedding though? Yes please.

I'm glad you still adore your partner after this long and children, you're both very lucky to be this happy and good on you for doing it for your own reasons. Yes you absolutely can be excited about the whole thing.

screams like an excitable teenager for you

Froglette16 · 25/02/2019 16:09

Congratulations! I hope you have a wonderful day. I love how excited you are! ❤️🌷❤️🌷🌷🌷

hiphopapotamuses · 25/02/2019 16:10

THANK YOU!!! I love the elopement success stories, and @ShartGoblin (brill name btw!) thanks for the squeals, I'd join in but I seem to have something in my eyes...

DH and I (second marriage for both of us) went to Mauritius on our own for 10 days and got married there. The witnesses were hotel staff and I wore a simple white dress. No stress or fuss and it was all about us.

We did have a big party a few months later at home though.

ShartGoblin · 25/02/2019 16:27

Just remembered that I know someone who has done this and she says her only regret is not ordering a big wedding cake and then eating it all herself. Something to bear in mind while making arrangements Grin

toldmywrath · 25/02/2019 16:32

Aw congratulations hiphop and I also want to say well done. For avoiding needless expense and hassle. I'm glad your own children are going to be there. I bet your parents tell you off, though. Just do it. Elopement is the way to go.SmileFlowers

toldmywrath · 25/02/2019 16:33

Shart, that cake to yourself sounds idealGrin

hiphopapotamuses · 25/02/2019 16:37

@ShartGoblin I've already ordered a cake that serves 8 for me and him to devour after the kids bedtime routine is done and we're back to earth with a bump!
Maybe I'll get two 8-man cakes so we have one each?

peachgreen · 25/02/2019 18:28

Ooooh I think we need to see the dress! Congratulations!!

Gumbo · 25/02/2019 18:37

Fantastic Grin - I'm so excited for you!

We eloped, I've never regretted it for a second... we celebrate our silver wedding this year Smile

hiphopapotamuses · 25/02/2019 20:03

@peachgreen your wish is my command:

There's the option of long sleeves which I may do as I worry about my arms looking like Richmond sausages in it
Not a big fan of lace usually but I've got just over three weeks so beggars can't be choosers and it fit almost perfectly so it felt like fate (the fact it was less than 1/3 RRP was also a factor!!) how mucking fuch are wedding dresses?!

I've also got an ivory jumpsuit as it's likely to be outside and if it's tipping it down then that'll be more practical:

Eek. This is really happening.

hiphopapotamuses · 25/02/2019 20:40

I've bought a sparkly wedding/eternity band AND IT ARRIVES TOMORROW. Seriously I can't cope.

OP posts:
Fluffyears · 25/02/2019 22:55

Ooh the band sounds fab!!! Are you getting them engraved?

hiphopapotamuses · 26/02/2019 14:39

It's here it's here! All sparkly as I don't have an engagement ring and the actual wedding is so cheap to hell with the cost of the wedding ring!

Delighted for you all OP, wear your beautiful dress and your beautiful ring and have an incredible day!

longearedbat · 26/02/2019 15:22

My oh of 24 years are I getting married next week - just us and two friends as witnesses. I haven't told anyone in my family (none of whom live nearby anyway, and a lot are also dead). I was just having a laugh to myself as I have bought a new outfit (trousers, boots, tunic/dress type top. I don't wear skirts or dresses) and it is mostly black! The colour didn't occur to me when I bought it, but I like it and it's hopefully a bit slimming...I was laughing because this must be the only brides outfit that will do for a funeral as well. We are just going out for a lovely champagne lunch with our 2 friends/witnesses afterwards, where much champagne will probably be drunk.
