To be so happy for Olivia Coleman?

I don't give 2 shiney shits about the Oscars, who wins, what they wear. It's just not something I've ever had an interest in.

Having said that I saw Olivia Coleman won best Lead Actress and watched the accompanying video.

I'm so pleased for her. It obviously means a lot to her and she is one of Britain's greatest actresses who has really done a great slog to get where she is and I've enjoyed so many of her shows and films.

Congratulations Olivia.

Sophie won an oscar!

Heybreya · 25/02/2019 10:19

Agree! Love her and so well deserved.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/02/2019 10:20

She’s brilliant. So pleased for her.

Also bizarrely pleased that Renee Zellwegger looks like herself again!

Can you imagine blowing a raspberry and flicking the vs onstage? There's no class anymore.

The80sweregreat · 25/02/2019 10:23

If She does play the whole ' i was poor once' spiel too much, it will start to grate then people will realise that she wasn't that hard up really and she will go from national treasure to the one we all dislike within a year! however, she was very good in Broadchurch. Not seen the film so cant comment on her performance.

My beef with all this is the annual backslapping for folk that are doing a job they love and getting lots of money for! i know a lot are grateful, but not much of it washes with me to be honest. I'm too much of a cynic these days to get excited about any of them getting their awards.

Oysterbabe · 25/02/2019 10:23

She's wonderful, I'm so happy for her.

JaneR0chester · 25/02/2019 10:27

I met Olivia Colman very briefly once and she was super friendly (social situation but she didn't have to be). She came across just as she subsequently does on chat shows and the like - friendly, a little nervous and to my mind, very genuine.

I'm thrilled for her, she's been fantastic in so many things.

MsTSwift · 25/02/2019 10:31

Love that she seems like a normal mum she looks like any of us at the school gate we really enjoyed the favourite

RadElla · 25/02/2019 10:34

I liked her in The Night Manager too, but her role in the Favourite was fantastic. Actually, the 3 female leads were all great - the film is provocative and also passes the Bechdel test a few times! Much more interesting than your regular period feature.
Congrats to Olivia Colman!

I don’t know who she is. I don’t know who GlennClose is either though.

I really don't think she was trying to claim a background of poverty with that one line! She doesn't say she was poor just that she worked as a cleaner. Acting success often seems such lottery and there must have been times when lots of successful actors thought it was never going to happen for them.

TanteRose · 25/02/2019 10:38

She was sooo good in Fleabag!

LaurieMarlow · 25/02/2019 10:41

I thought having temporary jobs was pretty much par for the course for actors.

She ‘made it’ relatively late for an actress. Of course she’s cleaned/waited tables/etc.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/02/2019 10:43

Love her as an actress and she seems lovely from what ive seen of her in interviews

Although my favourite is her performance in Rev...especially the 5 a side football episode

She was at a charity event in Winchester Christmas 2017 and my friend was extremely chuffed to be sitting next to her Grin

Yeah same here

We certainly dont have the money to support dd completely when she goes to london to seek her acting fortune next year

She appreciates that she may have to do all sorts of jobs to keep herself going

Have you been living under a rock, donaldtrump??? Grin

Myusernameismud · 25/02/2019 10:49

I was privately educated and have been a single parent on benefits, as well as a cleaner and a very low paid early years assistant. Private education doesn't guarantee privilege.

I love OC, I thought she should have been the new Dr Who instead of Jodie Whittaker (who I can't warm to at all)

Zoeputthatdown · 25/02/2019 10:51

Well done Olivia! From PC Doris Thatcher to Queen Anne. Grin

derxa · 25/02/2019 10:52

I really don't think she was trying to claim a background of poverty with that one line! Probably not.

JuneFromBethesda · 25/02/2019 10:54

I loved her speech, it made me laugh. I’m glad she won.

MaggieAndHopey · 25/02/2019 10:57

I assumed the line about working as a cleaner was a reference to the many years she spend trying to make it as an actor whilst having to support herself with other jobs. She's talked about it before in interviews - looking down the back of the sofa for a few pennies so she and her husband could buy something for dinner etc. It's a staple element of the 'struggling actor' story.

Funny how people like to put the boot in when someone's done well. She deserves her Oscar - but like her, and some others here, I was gutted Glenn Close didn't win, she was utterly compelling in The Wife.

AornisHades · 25/02/2019 10:58

She's done roles in so many programmes I've enjoyed and she reminds me of a good friend of mine so I think it's lovely she's won such a big accolade.
She's gearing up to succeed Judi Dench as the female acting National Treasure :)

NotSorry · 25/02/2019 11:00

not really, no - thought the film was overrated

Antonin · 25/02/2019 11:01

Another admirer of OC pleased for her but who also feels for GC.
Off track, does the Wife have a satisfactory ending (no spoilers). Just don’t want to invest in films which have a sad/bad ending.
Thanks
