Momo - To delete YouTube for all

carrywatermelons · 25/02/2019 08:53

DC watch a mix of documentaries, gaming and family challenge videos on YouTube. The eldest uses it to practice singing between lessons.
Momo has terrified me, my youngest DC8 is very sensitive so I really want to try and protect them.
Eldest DC has known about momo for a while and is a bit hardier but feel like it wouldn't be fair to 'allow' one and not the other.
What have you decided to do about momo?

Children have died in real life due to Momo

No they haven't

Lamkin · 27/02/2019 11:54

I warned my 8 year old about this yesterday, after reading all the hype about it.
I thought I had phrased it in an age appropriate way, but she hasn't been within an inch of her tablet since Confused

I feel a bit sad for her now, not being able to confidently watch her favourite 'bloggers', but on the other hand, I couldn't not have told her about it.

It's a tricky one.

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 11:55

Her favourite bloggers will not be posting momo videos
Honestly

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 11:57

semantics

"they believe the teenager's "intention was to upload the video to social media as part of a challenged aimed at crediting the Momo game" for the suicide."

Lamkin · 27/02/2019 11:57

That's what I've told her, I was just covering all bases I suppose.
Kind of wish I'd not mentioned it now, i can tell that it's really bothered her without even seeing it.

calsovip · 27/02/2019 11:59

Children have died in real life due to Momo,

There isn't actually any conclusive evidence to support this.

PBo83 · 27/02/2019 12:05

Children have died in real life due to Momo

As others have said, no conclusive evidence to support this. More harm WILL be done if we continue to perpetuate this which is currently being done in two ways:

  • In the playground
  • On social media by parents sharing fake accounts of 'momo sightings'

Kid's interests are transient, something new will come along soon and the 'momo' rumours will be a thing of the past.

We need to do our bit and stop sharing this nonsense and increasing the hype as this will lead to 'copycats' perpetuating this nonsense.

Just be vigilant as to your child's online activity (as we all should be anyway) and don't add fuel to the fire.

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 12:06

I agree PBo. I've locked down YT kids to certain channels it's a great feature.

There's great instructions here : www.makeuseof.com/tag/youtube-kids-approved-channels/

calsovip · 27/02/2019 12:07

Honestly, my takeaway from this entire fiasco is that (in the case of older children especially) outright banning and fear-mongering is not the way to go and I'm quite disappointed that so many parents have decided to travel down this route.

Instead, what's important is to help develop our children's (and some adult's too tbh) critical thinking skills wrt to the things they see and hear. Chance upon something on the web? Question it. Is it solid information? Is the source reputable? Hear a rumour in Whatsapp from their mates? Question it. Is it possible? How did they come across that information?

Don't pass along everything that gets sent to you ffs. Stop for a moment and think about the whys and the hows. If you don't understand how something works? That's okay. Read up on it from a variety of reputable sources. Form your own conclusions from there.

If you propagate fear you will never learn. It's Momo today, it might be something else tomorrow. Information is your greatest defence.

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 12:08

Snoring what real events on this thread? What ARE you going on about? Confused

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 12:37

Yes Ella they're incorrect but as proven by thread, they've probably been driven to address the issue promulgated by the parents' silliness over it.

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 14:58

My daughter in law just sent me something my grandson watched on YouTube. Creepy as fuck it’s chanting momo momo Monod going to get you you will die in the morning

Fazackerley · 27/02/2019 15:05

I only knew about this as the picture was breathlessly shared on Facebook by a mum who seems th think Momo is a real person. Hmm

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 15:31

@fangtasticbeast can you link to the video please?

WhoWants2Know · 27/02/2019 15:33

A woman at work swore today that she saw a video where Momo popped up and said to turn on the oven. 🙄

Mrsemcgregor · 27/02/2019 15:53

I’ve heard if you say “Bloody Mary” 3 times in a mirror....we’ll you don’t want to know what will happen.

Seriously, how come there doesn’t seem to be a single link I can find to a YouTube video with this -hoax- popping up in it?

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:12

Not unless you can tell me how to upload videos on here

Both mine have seen pictures, one on robotic and the other on YouTube but nothing of it speaking before. I'm not sure why people are surprised though. You can upload whatever you like to youtube. People were bound to make videos of it at some point

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:12

Roblox

teyem · 27/02/2019 16:16

Momo popped up and said to turn on the oven. 🙄

That creepy little shit better not start bossing me around to put the dinner on and finish the housework.

Restela · 27/02/2019 16:16

Not unless you can tell me how to upload videos on here
Just copy and paste the link of the YouTube video.

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 16:20

Just put the link here please

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 16:21

I'm not sure why people are surprised though. You can upload whatever you like to youtube. People were bound to make videos of it at some point

Exactly

They are making videos BECAUSE of the panic surrounding this momo rumour. It's a self fulfilling prophecy

teyem · 27/02/2019 16:22

Surely it's as easy as turning off the autoplay on YouTube?

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:25

I haven’t got the link to the YouTube video, she recorded it on her phone

I’d hope YouTube would take stuff like that down pretty fast

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:28

I don’t think children have been committing suicide over it, I think it was a bit of an urban legend but now people are going to be jumping all over it posting things

The video is the picture of it stood in front of the door and a creepy kid like voice chanting . I wouldn’t be surprised if loads of stuff like that turns up over the next few weeks
