Momo - To delete YouTube for all

DC watch a mix of documentaries, gaming and family challenge videos on YouTube. The eldest uses it to practice singing between lessons.
Momo has terrified me, my youngest DC8 is very sensitive so I really want to try and protect them.
Eldest DC has known about momo for a while and is a bit hardier but feel like it wouldn't be fair to 'allow' one and not the other.
What have you decided to do about momo?

@khawk89 was that an official Peppa Pig channel video?

givemesteel · 26/02/2019 22:04

I'm an adult and I would find that popping up scary, but I have a very low threshold for finding stuff scary (I used to find ghost busters scary as a child... Not now I might add! But even low level horror films terrify me). My child has unfortunately inherited my anxious tendencies and it that momo image would terrify her.

I don't know whether this is going to pop up in the middle of peppa pig or not, but I'll just use iplayer or Netflix from now on.

It's not about it bring supervised or unsupervised, even if it's on there a couple of seconds before you switch it off they've still seen it and it's horrible.

aLilNonnyMouse · 26/02/2019 22:32

For those saying "someone should watch videos before them being put up on YouTube" it's literally impossible 300 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. That's 18,000 hours uploaded an hour. They'd have to have 18,000 people working around the clock watching videos just to keep up.

khawk89 · 26/02/2019 22:51

No not peppa pig official it seems. Just a channel named peppa pig. The link is invalid now a week later however so I'm guessing it's been removed. I'll be sticking to the official channel if at all from now on but I hadn't realised I wasn't on the official one.

AlliKaneErikson · 27/02/2019 00:32

I can’t believe that so many adults (mostly parents, but not all) keep sharing things about it on facebook etc. All they are doing is increasing the hype which in turn encourages people to try to come up with this type of thing. The sooner people stop talking about it the quicker it will go away.

Rubadublin · 27/02/2019 00:40

Is kids YouTube and the KidsTube app the same thing?

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 06:53

I doubt it rubadub
The nature of apps is that there are often many with similar names, some much better than others, that do similar things. There are several kids YouTube apps that I have found. Never a good idea to assume that any app is effective or official without checking.

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 06:58

The takeaway message from this thread is that many parents need to be more on the ball regarding youtube and apps in general.

*don't ever let your kids have autoplay switched on
*check out which channels your child is watching, google the YouTuber and make sure you're happy with their content
*do not allow kids to watch cartoons from random channels, look for the official channels
*check the subscriber numbers on channels your children like to watch. If they have a lot of subscribers they will probably be fine, as they won't post content that loses subscribers/demonetises videos. If they have a small number of subscribers they could be any type of weirdo
*if your child has a YouTube account check the 'suggested videos' page. Sometimes weird videos sneak in there.

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 06:59

*keep your child's account signed in on your phone too so you can check it out regularly and look at the search history

Kathulu · 27/02/2019 08:50

If you want to keep the kids occupied and are too daft to figure out how You Tube etc work, a now tv kids subscription is £4 a month - for hundreds of programmes, no ads, no worries.

If you worry that your kids will see something online potentially dangerous or worrying to them and you think they wouldn't tell you then that's your failure as a parent to have open and ongoing discussions about online responsibilities and safety.

keepforgettingmyusername · 27/02/2019 09:08

@Mmmhmmm not totally unsupervised I imagine, but it's not hard to picture a young person watching YouTube on a tablet at the kitchen table whilst mum cooks dinner. Even if you sit beside them with your finger poised to stop a video you still can't make your child unsee things if something creepy pops up suddenly.

Deadringer · 27/02/2019 09:23

Funny enough my DD and I were talking about this yesterday. She is an immature 10 and has limited access to the internet but one her friends told her about it. He told her that it can 'get you' through your device. We googled the image so she will know what it is if it pops up. I told her there are nasty people who use the internet to bully and hurt other people. Forewarned is forearmed imo.

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 10:51

@trancepants

Let your kids watch Youtube or don't.

There are more options than that, the world isn't so black and white. Extra suggestions have even been mentioned in the first page of this thread

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 10:58

@spinningsister that is terrifying to see that channel all dressed up as a cutesy egg surprise video : I urge everyone to report these channels!! www.youtube.com/reportabuse

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 11:04

It has momo in the video title. Hmm

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 11:28

what's your point sorry?

Are you able to restrict videos based on a keyword?

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 11:30

The point is that it's not a 'secret pop up' or a 'creepy hack' it's literally just a video featuring the image of momo and if you don't want to see an image of momo you shouldn't be watching a video with momo in the title Hmm

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 11:30

What harm do you think that video would cause your kid? Seriously?

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 11:37

Calling it terrifying and dressed up as egg opening when it literally has the name in the title. So not dressed up at all.

I question if it was terrifying too tbh. It looked to me like they were presenting it as a baddie that they were trying to zap away or whatever.

Not anything remotely like the "turn your oven on" that lying little pork pie eaters are claiming to have seen.

Ellapaella · 27/02/2019 11:40

Well we've had an email from the school today about this. In the email it states that it pops up in what's app, Facebook and you tube and kids you tube. So is this information that's being sent out to parents incorrect? Asking those who seem to know as it says here this video does pop up in seemingly innocent videos.

Momo - To delete YouTube for all
PBo83 · 27/02/2019 11:44

It's the parents that are making this a 'thing'. I have seen dozens of parents on Facebook share posts about Momo (never their own experiences always some random stranger whose kids are 'traumatised'). Much like in this thread though, the evidence is very much lacking.

This panic is CAUSING the problem (if there is one) as there will be loads of 'copycats' setting up 'momo' profiles or creating momo videos because of all the hype it's attracted.

Just monitor your children's phones/tablets/history as, I believe, we should be doing anyway and it's a complete non-issues. Stop fanning the flames.

BertieBotts · 27/02/2019 11:47

Yes. That graphic is based on the same hearsay and rumours.

NotANotMan · 27/02/2019 11:49

Parents, schools and seemingly even police have lost control of their critical faculties over this Hmm

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 11:51

Ella, yes it is 100% incorrect.

SnoringSnorlax · 27/02/2019 11:51

@Meandmetoo

You're getting confused and you've clearly not read the thread properly as the real events are all clearly laid out right here. One too many pork pies perhaps?

Children have died in real life due to Momo, but they've come from messages, coercing the child into doing things. This isn't something "made up", but the videos are there to further peddle the terror and stoke the rumours.

If you don' think it would be scary for a 5 year old to watch in amongst all the context of these playground rumours and the real news about the suicide in Argentina, I wouldn't like to see what you let your kids watch!
