Momo - To delete YouTube for all

DC watch a mix of documentaries, gaming and family challenge videos on YouTube. The eldest uses it to practice singing between lessons.
Momo has terrified me, my youngest DC8 is very sensitive so I really want to try and protect them.
Eldest DC has known about momo for a while and is a bit hardier but feel like it wouldn't be fair to 'allow' one and not the other.
What have you decided to do about momo?

Well myth/legend whatever, like Bloody Mary and the like

Restela · 27/02/2019 16:34

So it's not a video of it appearing up in content midway through a video? It's just the stand alone momo song?

nothinglikeadame · 27/02/2019 16:41

Not to call anyone a liar, but I still havent seen any evidence of a child innocently watching YouTube kids and Momo appearing.

People might well have a watched a parody/imitation /fake clip , but that isn't the same as it actually happening.

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:43

Yeah a stand alone thing that just came on after something else had finished. I doubt it just appears chanting

The youngest saw a picture while watching sponge bob.

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:47

I asked both mine separately today if they New what momo is. Both said they’d seen pictures on different things

Believe me or not I don’t really care 🤷‍♀️ I didn’t believe it was happening myself yesterday

Restela · 27/02/2019 16:50

Just seems strange that no one has a video, screenshot or any type of proof of it in unrelated content. All the videos I've seen of proof on fb conviently cut off the title of thr video almost like they're just recording the momo song video!

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 16:50

Oh and the youngest one said it had chicken legs which I had to google because I didn’t know if it did or not

Ellisandra · 27/02/2019 16:51

Such hysteria from some quarters.
I asked my 10yo - she said some kids were talking about it, but she wasn’t sure.
I said “well look, it’s a deliberately scary image that isn’t actually that scary, I’ll show it to you. Do you remember Killer Clowns and how that was all made up but kids freaked each other out with it? Same kind of thing.”

Showed her the image from a news story. She said “I get why it’s scary, but it’s not that bad - I bet kids do it as a Hallowe’en costume this year. Oh - will school van it as a costume like they did the clowns?”

Then told her that (no change) Internet is only when she’s in room with me - but if it did pop up to just tell me and ignore it.

Job done.

WhoWants2Know · 27/02/2019 17:00

I bet Momo also said to type your pin in backwards if you're being mugged at a cash point, and it will call the police. And to order angel shots or put a black dot on your hand if you're being abused.

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 17:01

And now I've received an email from the middle DC's school saying they're going to give a talk to the children about it as the 'momo challenge' is responsible for the suicides of 8 children. The world has gone fucking mad. Blind stupidity everywhere and now given credence by people my DD looks up to and respects.

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 17:02

The chanting song that some fool on facebook is saying popped up is actually just a recording someone has done of the puppet with a child singing the song in the background. Funnily enough the video claiming to be a pop up cuts out before the credits come on. Yesterday it was the 4th result if you searched "momo singing" (iirc)

Still no actual evidence of it asking kids to turn the oven on.

BlueEyedPersephone · 27/02/2019 17:11

Those of you say it is crap. It is not, there are lots of videos on You tube that start as one thing and turn into something else a short way in. Not just momo but simply not child suitable or Parody. My children do not watch YouTube or have access to internet unsupervised as there is not control I can use to protect them yet from this. This is my choice as an educated parent. There is plenty of other screen time with controls I can trust, prime/sky etc . These are not risks of exposure I am willing to take with my dc.

FallenSky · 27/02/2019 17:15

As an educated parent myself I know this is utter crap, not the fact that there are dodgy videos on YT (there always have been) but all this nonsense about "hacking" and "pop ups". Being as educated as I am, I allow my DC to watch YT. They have the YT kids app and only approved channels are watchable. No Momo in this house. Only Jo Jo and Bow Bow and their fucking show show.

Meandmetoo · 27/02/2019 17:19

Absolutely blue eyed. But this thread is about momo popping up telling kids to kill themselves via videos and WhatsApp.

Which is crap.

ZenNudist · 27/02/2019 17:25

Really not worth letting kids watch YouTube or YTkids. We dont let our 8 and 5yo do it. Momo or not theres too much potential for sickos splicing disturbing content into supposedly kiddie friendly videos.

People are in denial about how damaging it is. Until i read this I was not aware but you could lock down to official channels. I still don't think it's actually worthwhile letting them watch this because there's lot of vapid shite on there and plenty to watch on paid for content like Netflix.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 27/02/2019 17:35

We've had a frankly stupid email from the school's senior designated safeguarding leader about it all. It reads like it's written by someone who barely understands the term 'online'. No wonder parents are in a frenzy, if I didn't know there was very little evidence of Momo actually popping up in YouTube vids then I'd be terrified too.

AhhhHereItGoes · 27/02/2019 17:39

We have had an email about it from the school now.

OrchidInTheSun · 27/02/2019 17:46

I've just had conversations with parents who all know someone who's seen it. No one who can actually provide any evidence of course Hmm

ScarletBitch · 27/02/2019 17:49

@WellThisIsShit YouTube has been listed amongst Fortnite and Pepper Pig by schools across the country.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 27/02/2019 18:14

What is really revealing about this is how many parents let their kids access whatever content they like, and have no idea how to screen it or stop it.
Momo or not, there's some nasty shit out there and I can't believe parents happily give their children free range on the internet!

GregoryPeckingDuck · 27/02/2019 18:18

Quite frankly you are a bit late to the party. YouTube has had weirdos targeting children for a long time.

BlueEyedPersephone · 27/02/2019 18:24

Exactly and yet numerous 'educated' parents let their kids watch with no supervision. Momo real or not is not the issue, unsupervised YouTube is

slashlover · 27/02/2019 18:57

Youtube have said it's rubbish.
