Momo - To delete YouTube for all

carrywatermelons · 25/02/2019 08:53

DC watch a mix of documentaries, gaming and family challenge videos on YouTube. The eldest uses it to practice singing between lessons.
Momo has terrified me, my youngest DC8 is very sensitive so I really want to try and protect them.
Eldest DC has known about momo for a while and is a bit hardier but feel like it wouldn't be fair to 'allow' one and not the other.
What have you decided to do about momo?

Now, now @slashlover you can't be coming on here posting stuff like that. Youtube are obviously in on the hack, Momo has got to them too. They're pretending they know nothing about it or momo is gonna kill them all in their sleep.
This is definitely true because I saw a Facebook post that my friend shared who said her cousins husbands brothers ex girl friends son hasn't slept in 18 months because of the video his mate told him about which is definitely 100% true and he's seen it for himself via a cropped screenshot that was sent to him. Plus he works for Google so he would definitely know. Even though he's 8.

Momo aside, giving children unrestricted and unsupervised access to the internet is so, so dangerous. If the issue highlights that & gets parents to rethink online safety then at least something positive will come from it.

AhhhHereItGoes · 27/02/2019 20:34

Exactly.

Supervision is what will help with many internet based issues: cyber bullying, scary content, accidenyly clicking on explicit content, internet addiction, grooming from strangers online. Of course it's not fool proof but a good way to go.

I'm 29 and I was not supervised at all from 10 onwards online. I saw a lot, did a lot. I don't blame my parents as they were computer illiterate (Mum is barely out of that stage now, they are late 50s).

But I know I will stay up to date with technology to best protect my girls.

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 22:08
Don’t know where my post went but my 16 year old found this on normal YouTube hours ago. Took him 10 minutiae find 4 different uploads

I had him delete kids you tube from his brothers fire tablets and he doesn’t think it the real kids YouTube and we can’t get rid of it so watch out for that

slashlover · 27/02/2019 22:17

I'm assuming your 16 year old searched for it deliberately? You can search for swearing on youtube. You can search for news stories on youtube. There are videos which show a guy who committed suicide on TV.

Big difference between that and it suddenly popping up in kids videos.

Codywolf · 27/02/2019 22:28

Just had a chat with 9 yrs dd and explained it a japanese statue in a museum and someone animated it to scare kids she said that kids had heard of it but not see it for themselves

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 23:08

He says Elsa gate, prime take advantage of the YouTube algorithm all the time

People uploading the momo stuff are also uploading normal child content

Tbf no one is going to convince you that it’s out there. Me and my 16 year old like I said before don’t thinl the suicide thing is real but you are stupid if you think the video and the pop u from fake accounts aren't there

Believe what you want but he’s shown me the uploads and the totally normal uploads that they’ve put on before, eg piano playing for kids

Everyone’s getting so crazy about it that it’s gling to turn up more and more , 4 uploads in the last 8 hours and it’s probably more . Stop being nieve

I’m also finding it quite amusing that people wanted links to YouTube but couldn’t find any and now you have links it’s like oh but you searched it. Well people have been trying to do that on this thread for days. My 16 year old found loads in very little time because it’s a creepy pasta the same as the Charlie Charlie thing children do now

Like my 16 year old says , it’s going to get hits. It would have been the same if we had internet in the days of the headless horseman and bloody mary

FangTasticBeast · 27/02/2019 23:13

And like I said earlier, my 6 year old had the picture pop up during a sponge bob video on kids YouTube. Wasn’t bothered by it , just turned it off because it was weird. He’s autistic and didn’t mention it when it happened, I was sat there apparently and it was that quick but he said it had chicken legs so I k ow he isn’t lying. Just delete YouTube . Simple

sagradafamiliar · 27/02/2019 23:19

I don't think you understand, Fang.

slashlover · 27/02/2019 23:32

He says Elsa gate, prime take advantage of the YouTube algorithm all the time

Elsagate was a thing, it did not involve popups.

People uploading the momo stuff are also uploading normal child content

I have yet to see proof

Tbf no one is going to convince you that it’s out there. Me and my 16 year old like I said before don’t thinl the suicide thing is real but you are stupid if you think the video and the pop u from fake accounts aren't there

Proof?

Believe what you want but he’s shown me the uploads and the totally normal uploads that they’ve put on before, eg piano playing for kids

Go into your history and post links to those videos.

Everyone’s getting so crazy about it that it’s gling to turn up more and more , 4 uploads in the last 8 hours and it’s probably more . Stop being nieve

Do you mean the clearly marked momo video you posted?

I’m also finding it quite amusing that people wanted links to YouTube but couldn’t find any and now you have links it’s like oh but you searched it. Well people have been trying to do that on this thread for days. My 16 year old found loads in very little time because it’s a creepy pasta the same as the Charlie Charlie thing children do now

Your link was to a clearly labelled Momo video. You did not link to a kids video with Momo added in. You did not link to a video showing a popup. The video was also uploaded today AS A DIRECT RESULT TO THE HOAX. Slenderman was creepy pasta, creepy pasta has been a thing for years. Creepy pasta in not in kids videos.

Like my 16 year old says , it’s going to get hits. It would have been the same if we had internet in the days of the headless horseman and bloody mary

Getting hits is not the same as it popping up in kids videos.

slashlover · 27/02/2019 23:54

PhillyD video calling it a hoax.

user1511042793 · 28/02/2019 00:00

Mine will
Continue to watch. There is always something. Can’t get excited.

FangTasticBeast · 28/02/2019 00:03

This is the 16 year old whose involved in all this nonsense. I found the video after I was shown something similar by my mum. As a kid with a large internet presence, I’ve known about Momo for months way before this whole issue was raised.
Maybe some of this has been lost due to translation, but my point about normal kids youtubers creating content surrounding Momo is in fact correct. I never meant the whole peppa pig/ fortnite stuff that has come up in the media, but in regular every day content.
For a while now, there has been a problem with content creators taking advantage of children’s curiosity. They hop on any trend that they come by. One of the more recent trends is a “3AM challenge” where they will call a character or do a certain thing at 3 in the morning. Now these are obviously fake to adults, but not to children. Creators have (and I have seen my brothers watch this) spoken about Momo and shown images of Momo to their child audience. Now this is very different to it popping up in seemingly innocent episodes of children’s tv shows, but nevertheless it is a problem that children are being exposed to such a disturbing image and the idea surrounding it.
Now the video my mum linked was directly due to the “hoax” but it proves it’s growing presence in the YouTube algorithm. Children will hear of Momo from other youtubers or other children and naturally want to know more. That’s just how it is, it’s how it was for the Charlie Charlie challenge and that’s the way it is now with 3AM stories and whatever strange happenings there is going on.
Now obviously some of this was lost in translation, it’s almost impossible for us to find these hoax videos even if they do exist, but my point is not to prove they exist, but to prove that Momo is present and active in YouTube’s algorithm and is definitely something that needs to be monitored.
It’s like the Butterfly effect, which ironically is why these videos even exist. Because of the seven degrees of separation malarkey.

slashlover · 28/02/2019 00:23

The 3am challenge is a different thing though, people monitoring their kids viewing would stop it pretty quickly. That content is not a 'my kids was watching a random video and it suddenly appeared'. Altjough you literally said it popped up on a Sponge bob video your child was watching. You said it appears on piano playing videos. You still have not provided proof.

I'm going to assume the video your mum found was searched for in the same way your sons was?

If I came on here and said that my sister's friend's son was watching kids youtube and hardcore porn appeared then people would demand proof. There is no momo proof - not here, not on Facebook and not on twitter.

sagradafamiliar · 28/02/2019 00:25

It's just a character that looks likemeonamorning a bit creepy though. There are much worse, highly distressing, real life event videos to be found on YouTube.

RockinHippy · 28/02/2019 02:37

It's 90% hoax

RockinHippy · 28/02/2019 02:49

Unless you mean this of course 🤷🏼‍♀️😆

downcasteyes · 28/02/2019 09:21

You can tell it's a story spread by adults, to be honest, because it keys into some extremely generic tropes from horror films. So many people are absolutely desirous of believing stories like this: they WANT to be scared, and they don't care if their fear damages children and generates unnecessary anxiety. People need to grow the fuck up.

teyem · 28/02/2019 10:08

Agreed downcast. It also acts as a tool with which to rap parents over the knuckles for their sub-par parenting practices.

There are several posts on here that say that it doesn't matter if mono is real or not because it has the desired outcome of making parents restict their children's internet usage.

But charities are saying that this adult-led media hysteria has the effect of ramping up the discourse on self harm which leads to more children self harming.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/02/2019 12:36

My DD talked about Momo this morning as the school brought it up in assembly facepalm
So I reiterated to her that's it's a scare story blown out of proportion but they have been taught cyber safety in school and that's what she needs to remember.
A friend of mine is too precious about her DD9 to let her walk 5 mins to school on her own or go on sleepovers, but she's happy for her to surf the internet, youtube, TikTok or whatever for hours unsupervised Hmm
