To ask why my teen keeps setting off the supermarket alarm?

CanILeavenowplease · 24/02/2019 16:09

Can no longer take my teen in the supermarket - any supermarket - where there is an alarm system on the door as he sets it off! We have tried various combinations - no phone, phone, no belt, belt, money in his pockets, no money in his pockets etc but the alarm goes off 9/10. We have suffered the embarrassment of searches and my teen is fed up.

Any ideas?

This happens to me too! Pretty much every shop I go in to I set off the alarm. I can't work out why it happens either.

RebootYourEngine · 24/02/2019 16:58

Please come back and let us know how you get on with the t shirt.

Lovemusic33 · 24/02/2019 16:59

Magnetic clothes tags are quite small now, so small that I had one attached to new underwear I was wearing which set of the alarm in Asda 🤣

CandyPuff · 24/02/2019 17:00

This was happening to DD. It was her Victoria Secret spray....the barcode or summat

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 24/02/2019 17:02

I had this for a while and it turned out to be a security tag left on some make up in my handbag.

bruffin · 24/02/2019 17:08

i used to have this when i went to Tesco after swimming. There was a metal tag under a jar of scrub in my swim bag

DishingOutDone · 24/02/2019 17:13

If you google it there's loads of people with similar issues including one who found a tag stuck inside a new wallet. Unless this has been happening since he was in his pram I'd say he has an item with a hidden tag.

soulrider · 24/02/2019 17:19

I had a decathlon sweatshirt that was the cause of this. It just had what looked like a longer than usual label on, but that's where the tag was. I should have realised sooner as there was a big diagram of a pair of scissors on it.

BangingOn · 24/02/2019 17:24

This happened to me for months. In the end I begged a security guard to work out why and by process of elimination we realised it was my wallet. There was a tiny security tag hidden inside one of the compartments. He said the shop I bought it from has probably changed systems which is why it didn’t sound when I bought it.

pobsgirl · 24/02/2019 17:25

Keys? I worked in a store that often had the alarms set off by magnetised keys, I'd swipe them over the box at the till and they'd be fine.

ADayAlwaysHasToEnd · 24/02/2019 17:32

The one that always sets alarms off for me is Mac lipsticks, but I have no clue why

BlimeyCalmDown · 24/02/2019 17:36

I had a bar code sticker on my mascara that kept setting them off, a helpful security guard identified/fixed it.

CanILeavenowplease · 24/02/2019 17:36

So....he has a number of T-shirt’s I bought at Everything5pounds for him for Xmas. He has been wearing them non stop. He doesn’t think it’s happened when he’s been in his school uniform. So have cut out the thickened tags and I guess we’ll see!

Bank card cause mine to go off couple of times

NataliaOsipova · 24/02/2019 17:40

I once bought a handbag with a security tag in the inside pocket that nobody spotted and this happened to me for weeks! I feel for you - it’s very embarrassing!

Minxmumma · 24/02/2019 17:44

My twins pram used to set off alarms everywhere. Turned out it was something in the wheels - am assuming a magnet as you could easily pop them on and off.

ThreeLittleBirdz · 24/02/2019 17:45

This happens to me every time I go into the local supermarket. I'm a wheelchair user so I'm beginning to wonder if it's something related to that. I've tried to narrow it down to everything it could possibly be; switching coats, bags etc and it just won't add up. Fortunately, the security man recognises us and is aware of the situation but it really is embarrassing Blush

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/02/2019 17:50

Quick suggestion: take one of the shirts, or one of the tags, with you to a shop where the alarm has been set off, and check that really was what did it?

murasaki · 24/02/2019 17:55

I constantly had this - one time a security guard said 'have you got mascara in your bag' - yes -turned out I'd broken the security strip but not taken it all off, and that was the thing . He waved it in and out of the door to show me. v odd.

emilybrontescorsett · 24/02/2019 18:24

Yes this used to happen to me, I never did find out what it was.
One security guard suggested it could be my make up in my bag, but there wasn't any visible tag on anything.

Macaroonmayhem · 24/02/2019 18:28

The chip in my ski pass (which I keep in my purse) sets some of them off.

HoraceCope · 24/02/2019 18:30

These alarms are a bit of a waste of time then

Deb13b · 24/02/2019 18:33

Years ago I was setting alarms off all over. Finally found out my new bag had a strip sewn inside it that was setting them off. Had to cut into the lining to find it.

StoneofDestiny · 24/02/2019 18:35

Yes the alarms are a waste of time quite often - I’ve set off alarms in Zara from tags left on in Debenhams - twice. They didn’t set off Debenhams alarms
