To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

Countrygirl, did your horse not try and mug you for the Icecream cone???

When I was a kid we often used to stop at the local pub and one of the mums used to jump off and get us drinks whilst we held the horses outside. Occasionally a horse would poop in the carpark😂. Mind you those were the days when the countryside was occupied by country folk rather than people moving in expecting it to be just like the city but green. No one minded horses in the pub car park or dogs in the pub then. In fact no one really minded the odd ferret in the pocket or down a jumper either. To my knowledge no one died from anything caught off an animal.

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 24/02/2019 19:27

I've never met Vicky and I already don't like her.
She sounds like one of those people who will tell you you're worse than hitler if you don't like dogs.
But hitler was reportedly an animal lover! Hmm
Tbh I don't really like dogs although Labradors I don't mind.
At least the cafe is giving you the heads up so you can make the choice before you enter.
I really wouldn't want to have dogs around me in a cafe, the last thing I want is some stinky mutt and it's equally stinky owner putting me off my food and sniffing about.
To the poster who mentioned Cafe Nero, I'd not go in there anymore as they're expensive anyway but thanks for the warning.
I personally don't even like the idea of people bringing dogs on buses either.
Excited= uncontrollable!
"Dogs are so super nice than humans"- tell that to someone that's had their kid mauled by one or someone whose been bitten by one.
Vicky does sound like a nightmare dog owner herself.
I'd personally walk out of a pub or cafe if someone with a dog came in. I think we're getting too dog friendly in this country compared to 30 years ago as back then people would respect a place that said 'no dogs allowed' but now dog owners will kick off if they see such a sign. Hmm

hoxtonbabe · 24/02/2019 19:27

I always wonder about this as nearly all the cafes in my area is dog friendly to the point they all have in house cats or dogs that swan about the shop happy as Larry however when I was looking at getting my license to make/sell cakes I couldn’t have animals on the premises, and from what I gathered when applying for a licence be it in a shop or home unless it is a guide dog they shouldn’t legally be in any shop that sells food . I could be wrong as this was a couple years back I was looking into this for my business, but these things change all the time, but personally if I saw that message I would be thankful she’s giving me the heads up so I know not to go there.

Gone4Good · 24/02/2019 19:28

But dogs like pitbulls are meant to be guard dogs so should be at home guarding the house while you're out

Pit bulls were not bred to be guard dogs. They were bred to kill other dogs in a pit. I live in the U.S. were they are legal, although many people want them outlawed, including me. The dog shelters here are full of them. They have killed many humans, including children and babies, other dogs, cats, in fact all other animals including horses. They don't just bite, they pull off flesh and swallow it. Human body parts have been found in their stomachs. Well meaning naive people have treated their pit bulls as equal family members after 8 years or more these 'pets' have killed another family members - often times a baby human.

I love dogs as much as Vicky, but won't eat anywhere here where dogs are allowed because of the pit bull epidemic.

Deadbudgie · 24/02/2019 19:30

Noteven one of the reasons we visit Devon at least once a month. Even costa and Starbucks are dog friendly and taxis are not problem with a dog. If only they would open up the Torbay/south hams beaches to dogs more in the summer rather than pushing them onto a very small stretch of sand so dogs are forced to be on top of each other

Lillyringlet · 24/02/2019 19:35

It clearly sounds like a pissed off owner whose had to face one too many people freaking out about dogs being about.

When you have had to deal with customers freaking out, you'll understand why she would have put out an intentionally pro-dog sign.

It sounds like a damage control to stop non dog people coming in and a way to get attention/free publicity from people talking about it.

It is hard sometimes to know which places are out aren't dog friendly so my guess is this was intended to be over the top.

Could it be done in a way less aggressive, yes but would that get them so much attention, nope.

I'm not a fan of aggressive but I know how this will have come out of pure frustration. Sounds like she has a dog she brings in to the cafe and people have complained.

A dog issue arose at a shop in Brighton. Manager brought in their dog who was behind a barrier in the window. Mum and two daughters come in. Daughters stroke and day hello to the dog. Next day manager is called up and told that they had a complaint about the dog jumping up and scaring /hurting the daughters. Despite cctv footage proving this lady was lying as the dog just stayed lying down and they girls went to it but she was clearly nervous and keeping her distance, she put on a complaint in a way to get the dog removed from the store.

Again, dog was in the window, behind a barrier and the window display had been created to include the dog, it was obvious that the shop was dog friendly.

Yes some dog owners can be crazy but so can anti dog people.

I grew up with dogs and love them but you have an awful behaved dog who almost knocks my toddler into a ditch being "friendly" or letting them run around a kids park off the lead trying to bite little kids or other dogs and making her terrified of dogs for months... Yea I'm going to go mad.

Sign worked though. Mumsnet has it as a popular thread with loads asking now where it is and she will stop non dog types going on and complaining.

whataboutbob · 24/02/2019 19:37

As a non dog owner I’m always thankful for a dog free beach. Owners don’t always see when their dog poos because they’re not watching them 24 /7, dog poo on a beach is not a good look.

Shinesweetfreedom · 24/02/2019 19:37

I would love to go to a cafe like this.I would be in heaven.Have not got a dog but look longingly at anyone who does hoping they will let me pat theirs.

givemesteel · 24/02/2019 19:40

Even if I did own a dog I wouldn't go to vickys cafe, I wouldn't want to be somewhere where badly behaved dogs are allowed by their shit owners to get away with anything and know Vicky will be there to defend them if they've knocked a table over, bitten someone or pissed on the floor.

Port1ajazz · 24/02/2019 19:41

Gunpowdergelitin , if you don't like dogs don't visit the cafe ! Cafe Nero allows dogs and we have met many lovely dogs ! I'd love to visit a cat cafe !

Port1ajazz · 24/02/2019 19:46

Givemesteel , what a crude comment ! No one forces you to use this sort of place so what's your problem !

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 19:48

It's not a local cafe but it's somewhere we go once a year on a short break so that's why I follow the cafe. Have never seen a dog in there but won't be going now due to batshit owner as well as dogs.

I wish someone would open a cat cafe round here. Stupid DH and his allergies. NDN has 4 cats and I love an excuse to go round and cuddle them whilst they give me a "fuck off" look

*Hard to find a cafe or in pub in Devon that won't allow dogs(

I was in a Devon pub last night which had the sensible policy of no dogs in the restaurant part but they are welcome in the bar.

Anyone want to open a guinea pig cafe :)

macblank · 24/02/2019 19:57

Op.

How, if you're THAT scared if dogs, do you walk down the street? No, I'm serious.

The cafe politely told you, that it is a dig welcoming place, and if.you don't like it, move on.

They are correct also, in that dogs are allowed where food is served... Just not where it is cooked!

Vynalbob · 24/02/2019 20:01

I like the sound of it.
Well signposted so no problem

Sorry

BejamNostalgia · 24/02/2019 20:03

gone4, it’s awful isn’t it? I think it’s cruel to breed dogs for a life like that.

OJZJ · 24/02/2019 20:10

13 years of owning a dog and all I wanted was a dog friendly cafe like they have all over in Paris, I used to have to sit outside in the cold if I wanted a coffee or pop her into a dog pram and cover it like a sleeping baby when she was too old to walk far or sit outside in inclement weather (cavalier so small enough just)
I would have killed for the luxury of dog friendly gluten free, child and PP free cafes .... I can't abide child friendly cafes with screaming brats and performance parents in esp if I have half an hour to my self with a book (I only took my son when he was asleep and left if he woke up "spoiling for rumble") my son is still only six but we go to quieter places and heaven forbid chat to each other as he also cannot cope with noise pollution from other kids wanting to tear around screaching- that's what playgrounds, woods etc are for..

MiniMum97 · 24/02/2019 20:13

Vicky sounds horrible. I would be flat to read that that message though as I wouldn't want to frequent somewhere run by someone as unpleasant as that by accident. Lucky escape!

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 20:13

How, if you're THAT scared if dogs, do you walk down the street? No, I'm serious

I have the good fortune of
A) expecting dogs to be on the street and
B) the ability to move around, cross the road etc.

Not quite the same when penned in in a small cafe and TBH anywhere selling food for humans I wouldn't expect to see dogs inside

I'm not terrified of dogs to the point of running screaming. Some are fine, I may even say hello (but never more than that). Big bounding dogs set me on edge though. Someone upthread mentioned how only "pretty dogs like collies" are acceptable and non-scary Confused I've known 3 people to have been seriously bitten by dogs and all 3 of those dogs were collies, there my least favourite breed

YABU

Their cafe their rules.

I, as a dog owner, oftenleave my dog in the car after a walknas to not upset other diners in cafes/pubs. I would absolutely welcome such an unequivocal message to all.customeds make good clear that this particular establishment is dog friendly and therefore to expect dogs and not give other customers or the owners.any groefover their presence

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 20:15

I don't understand about "child friendly cafes" - children are not another species, they are human, why wouldn't a cafe be child friendly (unless it served alcohol, in which case it's a bar really). I can't even cope with people who seriously compare people's dogs to people's actual children

sighrollseyes · 24/02/2019 20:16

Don't go in there then...

The80sweregreat · 24/02/2019 20:17

I agree that most of these celeb chefs are happy for people to spend £££s in their overpriced restaurants, but order the odd take out for a treat or because people cba to cook that one night and it's all wrong!
