To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

But hey, as long as a dog can go to Dobbies, that’s what’s important.

I'm glad you can recognise that fact Yabbers

So many less enlightened people seem to get resentful.

OftenHangry · 23/02/2019 14:22

You know most of food and drink establishments had a dog inside at one time or another? You can't ban guide dogs

Roussette · 23/02/2019 14:22

Yet so many dog owners don't understand that their dogs? Are just like small children. They need instruction, they need to be trained - for their safety as well as ours/others - and they also get very bored, very quickly

I so agree with this. If you have a dog train it! We have a very nice couple NDNs, we get on really well BUT they have a hooligan dog. A brown lab. They didn't train it because 'they didn't want to squash its spirit' and by god does it show.

If I am out walking and I bump into NDN, I have to talk to her stood a minimum of 6 foot away because dog will pull away from lead and jump up on me. When we go round to their house for drinks, dog has to be locked away because it will take shoes off your feet and NDN keeps saying 'just ignore her, don't look at her'. I'm sorry but she has just taken my shoe and is chewing it!. Worst thing was it jumped up at an elderly neighbour last summer and dogs claws hurt his arm quite badly, had to go to A&E and he had the bandages on for ages. I can't talk to my lovely NDN about her dog because it's too annoying.

OftenHangry · 23/02/2019 14:23

Glad my "dashdung" was well received 😂

allnewredfairy · 23/02/2019 14:48

Vicky is clearly bonkers Grin I would be far happier in a dog friendly cafe and if there were child free cafes I would be even happier.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 23/02/2019 14:49

Clearly they are trying to apeal to crazy dog ladies.

contrary13 · 23/02/2019 14:52

"They didn't train it because 'they didn't want to squash its spirit' and by god does it show."

Ah, but it's a brown lab... surely it's attractiveness renders training it obsolete, because it simply cannot be a guard dog Wink Grin

The stick possessive retriever I mentioned earlier? This is what it's owners did. He is their child - which, I do "get", because my dogs are a part of my family, too. But I leave them in the house sometimes and go off and do human friendly activities without them (like shopping). They won't leave their vicious grumpy dog by himself at all and haven't in the 3 years or so that they've had him. When they want to go shopping? They have to wait until they're both available, and then the husband waits in the car with the dog whilst the wife whizzes round the shelves... Hmm Shock When they said this, someone could quite literally have knocked me over with the stick their grumpy dog (who is also not trusted off-lead on walks whatsoever) was slavering over. My own dogs very sensibly won't go near him. The last time we saw him, my little dog positioned herself on my feet between him and I, and everytime the retriever shifted his head to look at us, she heaved herself backwards. They won't train him, because they don't want to - and I quote - "take away his personality", which... WTF?! Personally, I think that they're being somewhat cruel to it, but they think the sun shines out of his arse (well, the wife definitely does) and they're genuinely lovely people, so... I know it's just misguided on their part as opposed to deliberate nastiness towards their surrogate baby.

Hangry - I didn't even realise you'd written "dashdung" until after... but I knew precisely what breed you were talking about! Grin

Roussette · 23/02/2019 14:59

I agree contrary... taking away the personality or squashing the spirit = a horrible dog who people do their best to avoid.

It's been a long time since I've had a dog but if you have 2 friends round and have to lock the dog in a bedroom because it goes crazy and is really badly behaved, there is something wrong ! Last time I was round and sat on a barstool so not easily accessible, it jumped up and grabbed a chicken skewer out my hand! That can't be right... I did get a bit pissed off when NDN said... if you don't look at her she won't do these things.... errrmmmm I wasn't, I was concentrating on my meal actually...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/02/2019 15:05

Oh! Thanks fort all the nice comments. We've just come back from work. He spent an hour travelling in the car, 40 minutes sat in it, waiting for me; 20 minutes in a pet shop (they weren't sure which biscuit he liked best so they spoiled his lunch - they've known him since he was 8 weeks old.)

Then we did some obedience training - he yawned, his head does a flip top thing and a burly bloke asked, in a small voice "Does he bite?" I said "Yes, of course he does. How else would he eat his tea?" Said burly bloke asked if he could pet him and then got himself cuddled and wiggled on for about 10 minutes.

Then we came home, went out to the local dog walking spot where he chased an older dog around for his allotted 20 minutes and is now having a long drink. Had we had a cafe nearby we would have gone there so we all, dogs and humans, could have carried on our coversation and had a drink!

Luna ? I didn't say many people had mistaken him for a pitbull, just that many people ask daft questions about him biting or being a string, mean dog! You're the only person who has asked if he is a pitbull!

My usual response is as above. Most people are aware enough to smile and pet him and quickly realise that he is absolutely fine!

Of course, that's cos I train him. Not perfectly as I too don't want to squash the character out of him. But it will be squashed out enough to make him safe, controllable and acceptable to anyone not scared of dogs!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 16:49

They won't leave their vicious grumpy dog by himself at all and haven't in the 3 years or so that they've had him.

That is just silly - and very unkind to the dog.

What if one of them ends up in hospital - will the other not be able to visit because ether dog will get upset if he's left? Or will they visit, and the dog will be a terrified wreck because he has never spent time alone in an empty house and is scared witless?

I have to admit that there is usually someone in the house with our four canine juvenile delinquents, but they are left on their own at times, too (usually when we come back there is one on the windowsill, waiting, and when they see the car s/he jumps down to tell the others and they all come to the window, wagging like mad).

FuckItFriday · 23/02/2019 16:51

I can't stand all this dog friendly crap.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 16:53

Of course, that's cos I train him. Not perfectly as I too don't want to squash the character out of him. But it will be squashed out enough to make him safe, controllable and acceptable to anyone not scared of dogs!

Quite right! Kind, consistent training will produce a happy dog who is welcome (almost) anywhere- same with children. teaching them how to behave isn't "breaking their spirit" or "squashing their personality" - it is teaching them to be well-mannered members of society and helping them have lots of friends.

mydogisthebest · 23/02/2019 17:06

I would not say I prefer dogs over all people but I certainly prefer them over a lot of people.

windydoggy · 23/02/2019 17:10

This thread has made me laugh lots , some people have some very odd thoughts .
@CuriousaboutSamphire Your boy is beautiful 😁it did make me laugh so much that anyone could think it was a pitball !
English bull terriers look so very individual due to head shape that only someone that was a little bit daft could possibly think it was anything else .
Would love to take my boy to a dog cafe but he's only good with small dogs not ones bigger than him so think I will give it a miss unless they start the small dog cafe .

LunafortJest · 23/02/2019 19:35

Or, Windydoggy, only someone who isn't an expert on breeds of dogs, like you and Curious so smugly assume. If one doesn't know they don't know. There is no 'daft' (what a stupid word) question only a daft answer. But your post is another that proves how smug, condescending and nasty some dog owners can be.

Btw, I've googled pics of them both (interesting that 'bull' is part of both their names and they both originate in England - pit bull terrier, English bull terrier, yeah..... so hard for the names to be confused.....) and I still maintain they look quite similar. And both breeds also have the square jaws. But I will know in future not to ask any questions about dog breeds on here because I will just get some hostile, condescending smartarse retort. Even after I state it is a genuine question. Sorry I asked!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 19:56

There is no 'daft' (what a stupid word) question only a daft answer.

I've taught university students. Contrary to popular belief, there is such a thing as a stupid/daft question.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 20:00

Luna - the head shape of an english bull terrier is very distinctive. I doubt that there is any other breed wit a similar head and jaw shape.

There isn't the remotest similarity between English bulls and pit bulls - if you think there is you either need your eyes testing or you haven't got very good images to compare. Pit bulls and staffordshire bulls are superficially similar - I can understand anyone not familiar with dogs getting those breeds confused.

windydoggy · 23/02/2019 20:21

@LunafortJest wind you neck in will you ...
I'm not smug or an expert on dogs but an English bull terrier is certainly one dog that looks nothing like any others , if you can't see that your either daft or blind .
I have a staffie and if you said to me is that a pitball ? I would say no but would understand why you thought that as they look similar .
Maybe google dog breeds in images to educate yourself .

ghostyslovesheets · 23/02/2019 20:24

@SoSaidTheHorse - sorry missed your post - it's the Café on Bold Street in Liverpool

Tavannach · 23/02/2019 20:25

It's a clear enough notice and I'd be happy to avoid that cafe.

LunafortJest · 23/02/2019 20:44

@windydoggy
"wind you neck in will you"
" if you can't see that your either daft or blind"
"Maybe google dog breeds in images to educate yourself"

And you say you aren't smug (or condescending). Truly, you are. As I said, I did Google images and they look similar to me, except the English bull terrier had a longer nose than the pit bull terrier. But they looked similar in face and body.

Maybe instead of being hostile to an honest question you could consider winding your own neck in and calming down.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/02/2019 20:48

Bullies don't have a square jaw though. They have a very slim jaw. The picture I put up shows his wide forehead and slim jaw, doesn't it?

It is Staffordshire Bull Terriers that look pitbullish. That would be a very understandable mistake to make.

Maybe, instead of accusing people who are trying to correct your misunderstanding of being arrogant you could ponder your own reasons for not being able to take on board new information.

I too was a lecturer send there really are lots of daft questions...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/02/2019 20:50

My apologies... Not arrogant, smug.

Though I will cheerfully admit to some smuggery, cos he is gorgeous Smile

windydoggy · 23/02/2019 20:51

@LunafortJest no problem all totally calm here .
When you googled English bull terriers did you not notice the Roman nose on them ? Trust me no other dog has this .
It may have bull in the name but only an idiot could confuse a English bull terrier to a pitball .
Not sure why you are on a dog thread .

windydoggy · 23/02/2019 20:52

@CuriousaboutSamphire be as smug as you like he's gorgeous ❤️
