To think this cafe needs to rethink their message to customers?

Seen this on Facebook today from a cafe -

So we are a dog friendly cafe which is completely acceptable by health and safety as long as the dogs don’t cook your food or enter the kitchen 😡 so don’t give us a hard time if you don’t like dogs because we like dogs better than humans - note don’t give Vicky a hard time over happy dogs because Vicky will always defend the dogs

Now I have a bit of a fear of dogs and wouldn't expect to see one in a cafe and I'd be a bit pissed off if I paid good money for food and drink only to be bollocked by "Vicky" if I didn't like a dog in my face Hmm AIBU to think it's not a good message to tell your paying customers that they come second to another species?

I may be alone but I've never once seen a dog in a cafe

I suspect you're alone.

Why are you so upset that a cafe welcomes dog owners, makes this information available to the public before they come in and start complaining, so that they don't need to, and therefore allows people to decide whether or not they want to patronise the establishment.

YABVeryU, and sound an absolute PITA.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 09:59

Very nice Ghosty

hardyloveit · 23/02/2019 10:01

I don't agree at all! Dogs hair everywhere. Could end up in your food or drink!

My dd2 is also allergic!

I just think it's unhygienic for a cafe or any food place to allow dogs inside - outside yes not inside

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 10:03

Samphire

What a beautiful dog - I love an English bull. They look so noble and gladiatorial. He's very handsome.

A friend of Mr Schaden used to do rescue work with them and had seven in his home that none else wanted. They were lovely (but stinky! - windy dogs, as I recall Grin )

SoSaidTheHorse · 23/02/2019 10:03

Which cat cafe is that, Ghosty? I need to go there.

SoSaidTheHorse · 23/02/2019 10:04

Your dogs are beautiful, Contrary, and your chicken is adorable too.

Roussette · 23/02/2019 10:05

I agree hardy. Unless they are like Vicki and advertise as such then all dogs and their owners can go there! I think there should be cafes that are dog friendly and cafes that are dog free. Everyone is happy then.

I just think the world's gone a bit mad. Ages ago when the DCs were little, I had a job in a cafe. Health and safety had it that we weren't allowed to have dogs in the cafe where we served tea and cakes etc. Maybe that's all changed I dunno

SoSaidTheHorse · 23/02/2019 10:07

If your DD is allergic, hardyloveit then I think that a cafe that advertises itself as being dog friendly isn't somewhere that you'd consider taking her.

I've never had a dog hair on my table or in my food in a dog friendly cafe. The dogs usually beneath the table, some distance from the food, and from me(mores the pity).

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 10:10

But dogs like pitbulls are meant to be guard dogs so should be at home guarding the house while you're out.

Don't talk shite! And he's not remotely like a pitbull.

And what about GSD's - they are a guarding breed- should they never leave the house?

And BREEDS are not dangerous in themselves - just individual dogs (you know - the same way individual people are). Pitbulls and similar breeds have a bad reputation because their appearance, strength and (ironically) sweet-tempers mean that they attract the sort of people who want a mean-looking dog that they can kick the sh*t out of and it won't turn sound and bite them - BECAUSE IT IS GOOD-NATURED!

SoSaidTheHorse · 23/02/2019 10:10

There are cafes that are dog friendly and cafes(the majority) that aren't. Although the last time we had this debate on MN there was a dog hater who didn't approve of dog friendly cafes at all and who seemed hell bent on going to a dog friendly cafe and sitting there seething rather than doing the sensible thing of going to one of her numerous cafes that don't allow dogs.

IamPickleRick · 23/02/2019 10:11

Weirdly there is a cafe near us with an equally angry owner who loves dogs. No buggies allowed in the cafe and she blocked the disabled entrance with a table so that wheelchairs can’t get in either. Her little Scottie dog is always terrorising people. We just go somewhere else tbh, her quiches aren’t that great anyway Grin

You can be dog friendly and also people friendly, it’s not one or the other. If you hate people, maybe starting a cafe wasn’t the best idea. She could have been a dog walker or opened a dog hotel!

DrCoconut · 23/02/2019 10:16

Bet "Vicky" refers to her dogs as her children and dresses them in twee outfits and gives them birthday parties. (No offence to people who dress their dog or celebrate its birthday btw, it's just the whole dogs are equivalent to children thing that's a bit much).

contrary13 · 23/02/2019 10:16

Thank you, SoSaid - they have their moments Grin

The chicken, however, is a complete PITA... but my son and the spaniel love her. The little dog, however, undoubtedly thinks that her name is "lunch" and cannot be left anywhere near her when she's out scratching and fertilising my roses for me... Blush

Samphire, your dog is beautiful. Wasn't 'Bullseye' from 'Oliver Twist' a bully? The couple I've known were complete and utter softies - one liked to watch TV on his owner's sofa, sprawled in an upright but lying on his back sort of position, almost as though he were copying my friend's OH.

"Do you all know what is reported as the most aggressive breed? Dashdung. And I can only confirm. Knew 2 and bloody hel, never would go near that bastards!"

Hangry - I concur. a friend's grandmother had one who was renowned for sinking its teeth into people (including the grandmother) as and when it felt like it. Which was too often for my liking, I'm afraid. But that was another surrogate child and horrendously spoiled. As you say: it's not the dogs - it's the owners Sad

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/02/2019 10:17

Lovely post contrary13

FullOfJellyBeans · 23/02/2019 10:17

@hardyloveit

lol if your DD is allergic then surely you just wouldn't go in the dog friendly cafe? I wouldn't either as my eldest is terrified of dogs and would be hysterical. I don't see why the cafe shouldn't allow dogs for those who want their dog with them though? The hair doesn't get anywhere near your food unless the dogs are walking around on the tables.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/02/2019 10:24

What’s a dashdung???

woollyheart · 23/02/2019 10:35

A charmingly named breed somewhat similar to a dachshund but more aggressive 😀

Springisallaround · 23/02/2019 10:35

I don't mind a dog-friendly cafe or pub, even though I don't have a dog.

I do mind horrible owners though who use their dogs as an excuse to be mean to customers. I know someone who owns a pub and has two quite noisy very large dogs used to guard the property (so not just soft lap dog types). They cornered someone we know when they tried to enter the pub and barked/were very aggressive and the owner didn't come and deal with them for ages, eventually pulled them off. The person wrote a complaint and the owner replied pretty much like Vicky- my dogs have good taste and if they don't like you, it's your own fault!

There's a few obnoxious people who use their love of dogs to cover up the fact they are crap with humans. Plenty of people are nice to both and can handle both. Best to avoid places where they can't.

OftenHangry · 23/02/2019 10:37

@DrinkFeckArseGirls sorry for the spelling! 😂dachshund
Spaghetti dog.

@contrary13 i think people often ignore training when they have small dogs. "It's tiny! It's not gonna kill you like the evil big dogs"

KurriKurri · 23/02/2019 10:38

Samphire - your boy is a very regal looking gentleman - i'd be happy to have him sitting next to me in a cafe.
I have absolutely no problem with dos in cafes - non dog friendly cafes are still very much the majority - so there is plenty of choicce for non do lovers.
I don't take my poodle X to our dog friendly cafe ad there is a good chance he'd try to sit on your lap and then accidentally 'faint' onto you plate and revive himself by eating your scone. But sensible dogs are no problem.

Vicky on the other hand sounds barking (ho ho) mad, use of 'fur babies' alone would make me want to make sure I don't invade her space.

KurriKurri · 23/02/2019 10:40

A Dashdung is a Dachshund that spends it's whole time running off to look for fox poo - my Mother had one.

anniehm · 23/02/2019 10:45

For those of you who dislike dogs, stick with Costa coffee who don't allow dogs - cafe Nero however let them in. Ddog's favourite hang out though is our local pub as they sell pork scratchings!

OftenHangry · 23/02/2019 10:45

@KurriKurri 😂

Yabbers · 23/02/2019 10:50

I’ve seen it, sadly round our way this whole “dog friendly” nonsense actually means there are a whole raft of places we used to go that we can’t now. And that includes public transport, large chain garden centres, large retail shopping centres. So it’s not just a case of avoiding that little boutiquey cafe.

When we’re already restricted with what we can do because of accessibility it’s really frustrating to find our favourite places are a no go.

But hey, as long as a dog can go to Dobbies, that’s what’s important.🙄
