Egremont Russets by far the best followed by Braeburn followed by Granny Smiths.

Pink Lady are the best eating apple. The best baking and crumble apples are the Jonathan seedling (heritage species) apples from my parents' orchard in rural Victoria, Oz.

Worcesters eaten off the tree have a hint of strawberries about them. Herrings Pippin taste as if they've been sprinkled with cinnamon. Brownlees Russet have that lovely russet taste, and deep pink blossom - a really pretty tree.

Quinces, as PP have said, are also great - but aren't apples...

We had a quince tree in our old house, first autumn we were there DH came back in from the garden looking green and said '"don't eat anything from that pear tree, they're really nasty pears"
