I would say pink lady if they weren't so expensive.
Galas are the worst.

Granny Smith are the worst Envy

Oysterbabe · 22/02/2019 16:16

I love braeburns and granny smiths. Golden delicious are the worst, soft and tasteless.

PlasticPatty · 22/02/2019 16:16

Depends where you source them. M+S Braeburns are soft and nasty. Asda Braeburns are crisp and tasty. Golden Delicious are ok if you catch them before they're fully ripened.

Gazelda · 22/02/2019 16:27

I agree OP. Nice crunch, lovely juicy sweetness with a bit of sharpness thrown in. Good size too, so you get plenty of fruit before chucking out the core.

ajandjjmum · 22/02/2019 16:30

Braeburns are brill!

howabout · 22/02/2019 16:36

I agree depends on source, country of origin, size and time of year.

Got really good small Coxs from Tesco in my fruitbowl atm which were under £1 for 6. Paid 50p for a treat Mac Red from Morrisons which I refused to share with DC a couple of weeks back. The disappointment was beyond belief when it was sour and the skin tasted chemically.

AdaColeman · 22/02/2019 16:37

YABU
Egremont Russet or Winter Pearmain are the only ones worth eating.

windydoggy · 22/02/2019 16:38

Your all so wrong ... Discovery is definitely the best , so there.
My Nan had one in her garden with beautiful apples , very red on outside but white on inside .
Best apples ever

MongerTruffle · 22/02/2019 16:39

Honeycrisp apples are amazing.

TansyTree · 22/02/2019 16:40

Cox

scaryteacher · 22/02/2019 16:42

Egremont Russets are the best, Jazz and Kanzi are good, Pink Ladies, as long as they are not French, love a cox and a Lord Lambourne, but am currently hoovering up Magic Star, which is a new Belgian variety...great crunch and texture and not too sweet.

scaryteacher · 22/02/2019 16:43

ada Haven't seen a Winter Permain for years, but buy russets and bring them back to Belgium just for me to eat with a good hunk of a decent cheddar.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 22/02/2019 16:44

Anyone who thinks Golden Delicious are the best should be on a register Agreed.

Braeburns are a great every day apple. However I still hanker after some old heritage apple flavours I had once at an RHS garden where they were giving samples out - unfortunately without names but some of those were brilliant Some mank, it must be said, and a lot of maggots and bruises which is why the mass produced Braeburns have to win on a day to day basis.

silvercuckoo · 22/02/2019 16:47

Egremont Russet or Winter Pearmain are the only ones worth eating.
Oh yes. I tried a lot of different varieties at the harvest festival a couple years ago, short-listed exactly these two to plant in the garden as well.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 22/02/2019 16:47

Yanbu but they have to be kept in the fridge so they’re super cold and crisp.

Golden Delicious apples taste like primary school. Yuck.

Barbie222 · 22/02/2019 16:48

Yes I'm with you. Braeburn all the way. They also hold their shape well when cooker so I put a couple in with the Bramleys for pies and crumbles.

XmasPostmanBos · 22/02/2019 16:51

My Granny used to have a wonderful Coxes tree in her garden, much nicer than anything you buy in the shops.

itssquidstella · 22/02/2019 16:52

Pink ladies are lovely. Coxes are all fluffy and lack crunch :(

SpringForEver · 22/02/2019 17:01

Cox are crunchy if they are stored properly. Prefer Cox to any other but will get Braeburn if there is no other option.

Gala are mushy, and so are Pink Lady which are too sweet. I absolutely hate Russets, horribly brown furry things.

Golden Delicious are watery and have no taste. Granny Smiths are (should be) crunchy and tart but should also not be so old they have turned yellow. Actually no decent apple should be yellow, and I include Golden Delicious in that.

Supermarket apples are stored for so long they lose all their flavour and crunch.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/02/2019 17:09

There are over 400 apple varieties and I haven't tried them all, so I don't know which is "best". I like Cornish Aromatic. And Keswick Codlin for baking.

sackrifice · 22/02/2019 17:14

Pitmaston Pineapple are the best I've ever tasted.

Galas all the way....I've just grown some from seed so I'm smug knowing I'll have my own gala orchard in 5 years time haha 🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏

You might want to dial down the smugness as apples grown from pips are going to be crab apples. What you need is a grafted gala apple so that you know what variety you are getting.

Cadsuane · 22/02/2019 17:16

If I have an apple I want the tartness of a Granny Smith. Im not a fan or red apples but would tolerate a Pink Lady.
If you are a fan of Pink Lady keep your eyes open for Crisps Pink (we have got them in Aldi at times). From what I understand their beat apples will be Pink Ladies but these tend to be a bit smaller but just as tasty and are cheaper.

Isleepinahedgefund · 22/02/2019 17:18

I quite like a Jazz, although usually stick to Gala. My favourite ever was a massive big English apple I don't know the name of but only see at farmers markets in the autumn.

ibblebibbledibble · 22/02/2019 17:18

Yanbu
Braeburns are by far the superior apple.

Boyskeepswinging · 22/02/2019 17:20

Spartan is my favourite. Just the right mix of sweet/sharp and a lovely crunch. Mmmm ... Only downfall is they are only in season for a short time at the local market and I've never found them in supermarkets.
