I would say pink lady if they weren't so expensive.
Galas are the worst.

OP posts:
BudgieBird · 22/02/2019 17:26

YABU, they're good but they're not as perfect as a crisp Jazz.

Ronsters · 22/02/2019 17:27

Mac Reds are my favourite but hard to get. I like Kanzi apples (Sainsburys sell them), but they bruise easily and seem to get damaged in the shop.

I used to like Empire apples, similar to a Mac Red, but not seen these for years.

itneverrainsitpours · 22/02/2019 17:27

I love a Granny Smith!

mum11970 · 22/02/2019 17:28

Pink Lady definitely the best.

April241 · 22/02/2019 17:28

Pink lady then Jazz, nom!!!

OddestSock · 22/02/2019 17:29

@ronsters I was going to say empire apples too. I can occasionally get them at Tesco - I had a few packs last year

Ronsters · 22/02/2019 17:33

I'll keep an eye out at Tesco, thanks sock!

WatcherintheRye · 22/02/2019 17:36

Worcester Permian is the most glorious apple variety ever! Hardly see it in the shops these days, but was lucky enough to come across it again in a bag of 'seasonal' apples in Waitrose relatively recently.

DaffydownClock · 22/02/2019 17:38

Dunn's Seedling were the best ever but you never see them nowadays. I like Braeburn and Worcester Pearmains when I can get them.

AnnaMagnani · 22/02/2019 17:41

You are correct, Braeburns are the best apple.

Pink Lady and the rest are too sweet and an inferior apple.

Bittermints · 22/02/2019 17:48

British apples are best in the autumn. Cox's are wonderful then. They're less good after Christmas as if they are British they've been picked and kept in storage for a long time and if they're from NZ they've come over in a refrigerated ship weeks and weeks after being picked.

At other times of the year Granny Smith's are best. Most apples nowadays are far too sweet. I like apples that are crisp and tart, with just enough sugar to stop the mouth puckering up.

Calvinsmam · 22/02/2019 17:53

I’m going to say that pink lady are the best but they are a treat apple.
Then I agree a Braeburn.

But I think an apple at the top of its class will always beat a mediocre other type.
So a top notch golden delicious will beat an average pink lady.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/02/2019 17:54

Braeburns are all I buy but I feel I should test a few more out after this thread. Been a Braeburn eater since I left home!

Paddy1234 · 22/02/2019 17:54

Pink Lady

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/02/2019 17:55

Oh yes definitely Pink Ladies are a treat apple. Describes them perfectly. I’m not made of money!!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/02/2019 18:01

Yes , Tesco sell them, very limited season but well worth searching for.

When the checkout asked "What are these" to price them, DD (when she was little) piped up "Vampires" Grin so the name stuck.

BillywigSting · 22/02/2019 18:04

Pink lady are alright I suppose

Gala are vile

Jazz are where it's at. Sweet, crisp, juicy, not too big.

They are apple perfection. gavel

Angie169 · 22/02/2019 18:06

Braeburn are the best imo , they keep very well to . ( not that they get a chance to go soft in this house )

Jsmith99 · 22/02/2019 18:10

Cox’s are by far the best eating apple, followed by Russets.

All others are inferior in flavour.

nothingwittyhere · 22/02/2019 18:13

British Cox. The smaller the better...

Roomba · 22/02/2019 18:16

I agree OP. Though I do love a Granny Smiths too. Pink Ladies are too sweet and I can't be doing with the fluffier textured varieties. There's a community orchard near me that grows loads of unusual and old varieties that are amazing. I can't remember their names though!

22Giraffes · 22/02/2019 18:18

Pink Lady then Granny Smith.
Golden delicious are rank Envy not envy

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 22/02/2019 18:21
