to think that I have started to watch the worst film ever made?

It's called Fences.
It's essentially a monologue from Denzel Washington.

Perhaps it's supposed to be a study on social injustices at the time, but I have endured 40 minutes of it and literally can't take one more second!

Please don't tell me that this is some sort of award winning film and that I'm a bit thick or something?

I'd heard the title before which is why I thought it would be good. 40 minutes in, and literally nothing has happened. Except yer man ranting on and fucking on and fucking on.

I love Denzel usually, and his acting is good, but fuck me, the writing is pure and utter unadulterated shite!

@peachgreen

You picked up on only the last line of my OP. Not the 5 or so sentences before that. What axe have you to grind here?

OP posts:
Dohee · 21/02/2019 12:07

I could have stuck IMO at the end of every sentence, but that didn't need to be stated, as I am individual writing as an individual and that's obvious from the forum we are on.

I hope my Denzel has gone back to do my preferred genre! I can't lose him to art *sobs

OP posts:
Dohee · 21/02/2019 12:10

He is a fabulous actor though and carrying off that decidedly boring character was no mean feat.

Has anyone seen the last episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? Titus stars in a film that I'm pretty sure is a poss take of Fences and is essentially him doing a monologue including the earnestly spoken lines I want an award, I really want an award...

Charliesdarling · 21/02/2019 12:14

The Favourite. by far the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen. In view of the accolades it is getting no doubt I will be told I'm wrong but..it rather puts me in mind of a book I read when young. "The Emperors New Clothes"

Nephilim1964 · 21/02/2019 12:17

At least you've saved me a few quid Charliesdarling Wink

PerpendicularVincent · 21/02/2019 12:17

Amortentia I totally agree. The Greatest Showman was plotless shite, I was torn between shooting the TV or myself to make it stop.

Myusernameismud · 21/02/2019 12:18

Has anyone seen Mother! with Jennifer Lawrence? Pile of utter shit, and really weird. I'm not normally a fan of the films that win all the awards, but Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was lovely. Sad, but a great watch.

I have a Rachel from friends approach to movies. I'll say my favourite film is Brokeback Mountain if asked. But it's actually Practical Magic.....

BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 12:18

Greatest Showman is definitely the most overrated film of my entire lifetime

KeyboardCat · 21/02/2019 12:31

(Though how anyone can not love The Big Lebowski I don't understand, it's SO GOOD.)

Just because you think it's good doesn't make it good...

See what I did there?

StroppyWoman · 21/02/2019 12:32

Roma was bloody magnificent.
I cried for ages after it finished. Very slow, took its time to build but all the more powerful in the end because of it. I loved those women so much by the end of the film.

But then, I really liked Shape of Water (I absolutely love Sally Hawkins), I love musicals (Moulin Rouge, Greatest Showman) for escapism and fun, I think Inception isn't nearly as good as Memento.
Crazy Stupid Love is one of my favourite romcoms, I thought Gravity was great on the big screen but pointless on a DVD, and THe Big Lebowski is hilarious (You're out of your depth, Donny)

So my taste is clearly at odds with much of the thread.

The Guardian, Highlander 2 and Crash (the one about the sex in car crashes) are probably the worst films I've seen.

I think 2001 is boring, don't enjoy The Godfather and I hate Apocalypse Now (they kill a cow live on screen. for "atmosphere' EWWWWW. So much testosterone in one film) so I am also an uncultured swine according to Every Film Bloke Ever. Wink
Oh, and True Lies - such gutwrenching misogyny mascarading as a fun film. Hate it.

junebirthdaygirl · 21/02/2019 12:36

Oh l love that movie as l could listen to Denzel all day.
Even when to see him in lceman cometh on Broadway when in New York. I just love his voice.

peachgreen · 21/02/2019 12:37

@KeyboardCat I was being tongue in cheek - sorry, should have added a winky face!

peachgreen · 21/02/2019 12:42

@Dohee No axe to grind, honestly! (And apologies for quoting you out of context in that previous discussion, it was just as an example.) I'm honestly not trying to be a dick, I just think unilaterally dismissing something as "shite" is unreasonable - and after all, you DID ask if you were BU to say you were "watching the worst film ever made" - I thought you were being unreasonable and said so! Wink

@BartonHollow I don't think they're the same sentiment at all. But fair enough if you think that's just me being pedantic.

peachgreen · 21/02/2019 12:43

@Myusernameismud I bloody love Practical Magic.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/02/2019 12:48

You've clearly never seen the Matt Damon/Casey Affleck 'masterpiece' Gerry.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 21/02/2019 12:48

It's strange that you think it's not realistic because he didn't beat his family up, plenty of people are fucked up and abuse their wives and kids and make their lives hell without lifting a finger. You can be scared of a person even if they've never hit you.
You don't seem to understand that.

I thought the film was ok I certainly wouldn't call it shite but it wasn't what I thought it would be.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 21/02/2019 12:50

@Myusernameismud I loved Three Billboards Outside Missouri!

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 21/02/2019 12:53

Outside Ebbing Missouri..

Myusernameismud · 21/02/2019 12:54

@peachgreen it's my go-to film whenever I'm feeling a bit shite. And it always makes me cry. I paid actual money to download the soundtrack too, that Stevie Nicks version of Crystal is my favourite ever song.

Dohee · 21/02/2019 12:54

That's the thing though, she didn't appear scared at times when she should have been. The bit I'm thinking about is when she's hanging out the washing (yes to anyone reading, it is that boring) and she just shakes her head and chuckles on her way in. In reality, that wouldn't have happened as a woman scared wouldn't have disagreed or criticised him - she might have thought it, but she wouldn't have said it out loud. So it was pure shite.

OP posts:
BartonHollow · 21/02/2019 12:56

@StroppyWoman

We really do seem to have quite similar taste, but Roma left me absolutely cold and I couldn't have cared less about them

But it goes to show how film can polarise

@Myusernameismud

Love Billboards and Practical Magic funny how you mentioned the Rachel From Friends thing I always think that too!

I say my favourite film is Shawshank
My actual favourite film is Secretary

Dohee · 21/02/2019 12:59

Ok, I feel I should qualify what I mean by 'pure shite' here. Pure shite means that it's unresearched, unrealistic and the audience will never feel for the character as the character(s) don't ring true. There is something that wouldn't happen in real life. It's a movie that tries to be a true reflection of society, but it's a movie that lacks the basic understanding of abusive relationships.
The acting, particularly by Denzel is superb, but the movie is pure shite and the script is pure shite.
I hope I've managed to expand on my original critique a little further! Grin

OP posts:
StroppyWoman · 21/02/2019 13:03

Barton - Did you get to the end? I admit I didn't care much for a lot but by the end I was a total convert.
Bloody blokes! The family father and the shite boyfriend. And oh god, the hospital. But the beach at the end - I was in bits.

I get it won't appeal to everyone - it's niche at best!
