AIBU to ask you to explain missing ironing board

Hi,

This may seem trivial to some but it has totally freaked me out to the extent I am spending the night with friends. Please help me see reason!

Yesterday, I had a meeting which required a more formal outfit that was nice and crisp. I have an ironing board which is rarely used but ha ALWAYS been placed in the coat cupboard in my corridor by the front door. However, when I went to retrieve it yesterday it was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I am disturbed as I can come up with no logical explanation as to why it was missing. The last time I used it was 3 ish weeks ago.

  • I live on my own in C. London
  • My visitors arrive on foot, tube etc
  • I would notice if they walked off with the ironing board- it is 100% not in the flat.
  • Why steal a rarely used ironing board
-I live in a secure building with the concierge (until 7 pm)

AIBU to ask you to please explain this. I'm really unnerved. Am I crazy? What would your natural reaction to this be?

Buy another ironing board. The first one will then turn up to spite you.

silvercuckoo · 21/02/2019 07:16

You are not on any type of medication, are you? If you have ruled out all places where it could have been placed / misplaced, and malicious intent can be safely ruled out, I'd probably see a doctor. A cousin's illness also started with some weird things she could not explain (like moved furniture and other "poltergeist" activity), sadly she is no longer with us because of a brain tumor.

wafflyversatile · 21/02/2019 07:28

What is the pattern on the cover? Could you have put it in the other way round so it is dark against dark?

Take photos and post them up for us to look.

If it really isn't there there are only 4 possibilities. someone with a key has removed it. Someone without a key has removed it. You have removed it and forgotten or you sleepwalked it away. Speak to the letting agent. See if they've allowed someone in.

Mousetolioness · 21/02/2019 07:35

I reckon it's your brain tricking you. You have an aversion to ironing, to such a degree, that although you think you want to iron that garment, your subconscious is over-ruling everything else. And your friends have the same issue or are incredibly kind and not wanting to point out it's there in plain sight!

yearinyearout · 21/02/2019 07:49

Englishrose what was the upshot of the candle thread? I never made it to the end!!

MRex · 21/02/2019 08:01

@isthismylifenow - those sleeping pills sound fantastic, where can I get some for DH? (Looks forward to epic overnight tidy session.)

RestingBitchFaced · 21/02/2019 08:11

You will be even more freaked out when you walk into a room and it's there in plain sight where you have already looked for it

MRex · 21/02/2019 08:13

I have new theories:

  1. The concierge did it in the hall with a key. The concierge needed an ironing board, he took it from your flat (call it 5) but returned it to flat 7 by mistake. Flat 7's occupant has started a thread on netmums about how an extra ironing board can just turn up.
  2. It's slipped between the 2 hall cupboards. There's a stupid chipboard divider thing between the hall cupboards. It's not secured at the bottom, so the ironing board slipped through and is stuck behind the wall.
  3. Your immediate neighbour is an opportunistic stalker. The cupboard is directly next to the neighbour's cupboard. The neighbour removed the dividing wall one day to put in place an access door that can only be opened from their side. The ironing board fell into his flat, but because it's the same model as he has (which he'd left next between the fridge and the wall like everyone else) he simply hasn't noticed yet that he now has two ironing boards.
Strugglingonagain · 21/02/2019 08:18

Argh I need this to be resolved, I too am over invested and rtft hoping it had been resolved.

Any news OP? Are you ok?

TheRealHousewife · 21/02/2019 08:23

marvellousnightforamooncup · 21/02/2019 08:25

It's in Narnia. Is there snow in your wardrobe?

Elephantina · 21/02/2019 08:26

OMG. Where the fuck is the fucking ironing board, I can't bear it.

PumpkinPie2016 · 21/02/2019 09:20

Had it turned up OP? I'd be freaked out too and assuming that someone has entered your flat without your knowledgeSad

Begs the question why someone would steal an ironing board though?! Wtf?

I would definitely change the locks/code though!

Do let us know when you find out!

DanielRicciardosSmile · 21/02/2019 09:33

@yearinyearout the friend found the candle in her house and realised that, despite allegedly never having bought the chocolates, she had wrapped them up by mistake. I reckon the whole thing was made up.

calpop · 21/02/2019 09:33

I lived in a small one bedroom flat once and the day before I was flying on holiday I discovered my passport was missing from the bedside table drawer where it always was. After much searching I phoned up the letting agent to ask if they had been round as I assumed they would have a key.... Oh yes they said, we sent someone round to do a viewing last week. Turned out the landlord had put the flat on the market the month before, no one had bothered to tell us. Someone had booked a viewing, the lettings agent had been delayed on a previous viewing and the idiot in the estate agent on the high street had given the man the key to let himself in unaccompanied for a look round. He presumably opened the drawer and swiped the passport. This was a one bedroom flat in London, at the time, worth £30,000 so presumably no background checks done and the lettings agent was utterly incompetent. (Flat was in Clapham Junction so poky one bed flat now worth a staggering 800k, wish I'd bought it).

My point is, renting is shit. There is no way the flat will be secure as you expect it to be. The landlord will have a key, or multiple keys. The letting agency will have multiple keys - will have been given one and made a couple of copies. These will have tags with the address on. Any one associated with one or either could have let themselves in, for whatever reason. Why they'd take the ironing board I have no idea....

MollysLips · 21/02/2019 09:58

Did the ironing board come with the flat?

I think it's fallen down behind (most likely) or inside (less likely, but maybe) the tv box in the cupboard.

barefaced · 21/02/2019 10:04

Get a camera ASAP. Someone might return it (I suspect the concierge), or may have let themselves in to use it and burnt it so took it away to stop you noticing. Is the iron clean?

DailyBaileys · 21/02/2019 10:08

Even my dreams need to get out more...

Grin 😂 👍

MrsKCastle · 21/02/2019 10:09

Have you got a carbon monoxide detector OP?

If you have really checked everywhere and it absolutely isn't in the flat, I can see two possibilities:

  1. Someone has been in the flat without your knowledge or permission- think through everyone who has keys/the keycode or any kind of link to the flat e.g. letting company.

  2. You have moved the ironing board yourself but don't remember doing it. As a pp mentioned, some illnesses can be linked to people doing strange things and not remembering. Carbon monoxide poisoning can have the same effect.

HedgehogGirl · 21/02/2019 10:14

You iron by the front door. The board was up. You folded it up to get past on your way out and put it outside the front door instead of in the cupboard...? Then someone nicked it from outside the front door and noone has been in your flat and you can sleep safety.

RebootYourEngine · 21/02/2019 10:14

I need to know to that the ironing board is found safe and well.

QuirkyQuark · 21/02/2019 10:34

I need to know where it's found.

I couldn't find my coffee machine recently, searched all the kitchen cupboards, nothing. Went back the next day and it was there, it had always been there hiding in plain sight, I just hadn't noticed it the day before.

InkyToesies · 21/02/2019 10:40

Are all / some of the flats keyed alike?

ohmydaysagain · 21/02/2019 10:51

Is it in the empty tv box?
