AIBU to ask you to explain missing ironing board

Hi,

This may seem trivial to some but it has totally freaked me out to the extent I am spending the night with friends. Please help me see reason!

Yesterday, I had a meeting which required a more formal outfit that was nice and crisp. I have an ironing board which is rarely used but ha ALWAYS been placed in the coat cupboard in my corridor by the front door. However, when I went to retrieve it yesterday it was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I am disturbed as I can come up with no logical explanation as to why it was missing. The last time I used it was 3 ish weeks ago.

  • I live on my own in C. London
  • My visitors arrive on foot, tube etc
  • I would notice if they walked off with the ironing board- it is 100% not in the flat.
  • Why steal a rarely used ironing board
-I live in a secure building with the concierge (until 7 pm)

AIBU to ask you to please explain this. I'm really unnerved. Am I crazy? What would your natural reaction to this be?

To me this isn’t an unusual occurrence, having things go missing.

The latest was witnessed by dds friend.

Dd went to pick up her debit card from the side of the basin and it slipped out of her hands and fell landing what they thought was under the wall hung vanity unit.

They both scoured everywhere but it had disappeared. Just to describe the bathroom. There is absolutely nothing on the floor. Dd has had to get another card.

We think our sofa is definitely a portal to an alternate universe the amount of stuff people put down on the sofa and it all just disappears.

Things randomly appear years later.

There might be a perfectly logical explanation for your ironing board but we have gone beyond logic with things in our house

Do you have to say to St Anthony what you're looking for?

I've lost an enormous knife a few months ago. I live alone! No idea where it went

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 21/02/2019 04:19

It wasn’t me Hmm...

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/02/2019 04:43

Order a new one, the moment the new one arrives in your flat the old one will reappear :D

vinegarqueen · 21/02/2019 04:50

How big is the TV box in the cupboard? Normally I wouldn't suggest it but if the board is short and the TV is enormous the board could have somehow hidden inside..?

Nah. It has clearly gone to another dimension.

jemihap · 21/02/2019 05:33

Can I ask what was the outcome of the candle/chocolates thread?

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 21/02/2019 06:11

@SneakyGremlins you would need to mention what’s missing to St Anthony in your prayer. If he finds it, you really should make an offering of a few coins at the church. There is usually a st Anthony statue in lost Catholic Churches. You can ask St Jude for help if you are stuck as well- he deals with hopeless cases and lost causes.

SneakyGremlins · 21/02/2019 06:24

@Jebuschristchocolatebar

Thankyou! Any church? We just have, well, standard churches here!

TheChineseChicken · 21/02/2019 06:26

I had a dream last night that I found the ironing board!

isthismylifenow · 21/02/2019 06:28

Got to hand it to this bunch, the most excellent suggestions for where it could be.

My contribution would be to try very hard to look for something else that may be lost, and chances are you will find the board. Just curious to know if you did find other previously lost items during the ironing board hunt?

But, on a more serious possibility.... do you by any chance taking sleeping tablets? I have two friends (neither know each other so I know this is not made up hogwash) who have done very bizzare things during the night that they had no recollection in the morning. They only knew as their partners told them. One included washing, drying, ironing and putting away their entire cupboard full of linen, another was kitchen tidying related.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 21/02/2019 06:29

@SneakyGremlins that should say most churches not lost churches!!!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/02/2019 06:29

That's all well and good, Chinesechicken, but where was it??

stayathomer · 21/02/2019 06:30

Just realised I don't think we even have an ironing board anymore, wondering when we got rid of it! Sounds like you checkd everywhere OP ( I'd have said behind a couch or door). Really hope you find it, theres a lot of us very invested and I wish to applaud some of the posters above for some of the best one liners I've seen!!

SneakyGremlins · 21/02/2019 06:31

@Jesuschristchocolatebar

Had visions of having to trek through the Amazon rainforest looking for lost churches or something Grin

everydaymum · 21/02/2019 06:32

Rather than 'up against something', is it under something, your bed, the sofa?

TheChineseChicken · 21/02/2019 06:35

@ThumbWitchesAbroad it was in the hallway leaning against a piece of furniture

StealthPolarBear · 21/02/2019 06:36

As a pp said I think you've put it outside your flat and it's been taken or tidied away. When you say you iron in the corridor do you mean the one in your flat or outside?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/02/2019 06:37

Shamelessly pretending to be part of the furniture, eh??
Pity that probably isn't the case for the OP though.
Ah well.

It's a bit big for the Borrowers to have taken as well...

StealthPolarBear · 21/02/2019 06:39

I realise this woukd probably be something you'd remember but you didn't lend it to a neighbour did you?

DearPrudence · 21/02/2019 06:46

The letting agent must have keys. Ask them. It's possible they manage more than one flat in the building and came into yours by mistake.

banivani · 21/02/2019 06:53

It’s “Holy st Anthony good little man, help me find my [thing] as quick as you can” actually. End with an amen for maximum effect.

You’re obv worried OP and there have been some good suggestions on the thread about how you can double check security etc. to rule out that aspect.

Based on what you’ve written though I’m thinking you’ve done something unusual with it and that’s why you can’t find it. You write several times that you’d never put it there or there or you always do this or that. Based on being married for 20 years to my husband and having family members with add/similar I’d wager this is where you’re going wrong. Your brain is only remembering what you normally do with the ironing board. This time you did something unusual, like put the teabags in the fridge just for a second because you had your hands full and the milk was boiling over or whatever and then you just don’t remember that this happened. I think the explanation that you popped it outside the front door for some unusual reason would be very likely for example, and then somebody either nicked it or tidied it away.

My daughter had a house key when she was little. She lost it one day and insisted it had been stolen from her desk. Could not have happened any other way. She always kept it there. There was a thief in the classroom etc. Key was found in the schoolyard under monkey bars and then she remembered that oh yeah, she kept it around her neck that day and it fell off when she was hanging upside down and when the bell rang she’d run inside.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 21/02/2019 07:01

This happens to me all the time. When you find it on its side behind the sofa or between a wardrobe and the wall, or behind a door, you will vaguely remember putting it there for some excellent reason which escapes you.

The reason I don't worry about burglars is I can also lose things without getting up from my seat. They just disappear, and turn up later.

LambChopsMcGee · 21/02/2019 07:06

I'm obviously too involved in this, OP, I dreamt about your ironing board (for reference, I found it in your cupboard, which had sliding doors and it had got wedged between them).

Even my dreams need to get out more...

Janethevirgo · 21/02/2019 07:07

Tell the true, it’s just a stealth boast so you can show us your large spacious flat Smile

OneBiscuitAtATime · 21/02/2019 07:09

Behind the bookshelf where the iron is?
