AIBU to ask you to explain missing ironing board

Hi,

This may seem trivial to some but it has totally freaked me out to the extent I am spending the night with friends. Please help me see reason!

Yesterday, I had a meeting which required a more formal outfit that was nice and crisp. I have an ironing board which is rarely used but ha ALWAYS been placed in the coat cupboard in my corridor by the front door. However, when I went to retrieve it yesterday it was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I am disturbed as I can come up with no logical explanation as to why it was missing. The last time I used it was 3 ish weeks ago.

  • I live on my own in C. London
  • My visitors arrive on foot, tube etc
  • I would notice if they walked off with the ironing board- it is 100% not in the flat.
  • Why steal a rarely used ironing board
-I live in a secure building with the concierge (until 7 pm)

AIBU to ask you to please explain this. I'm really unnerved. Am I crazy? What would your natural reaction to this be?

If you're really concerned that someone might have entered your flat, get a door alarm and a motion camera that will alert you to any movement when you're out or at work.

Anothertempusername thanks for the lolz - "like a sinister Where's Wally" !!

Betsy86 · 20/02/2019 21:39

I have no logical suggestions that haven’t already been said... but i really need to know the outcome of this!

chocolateworshipper · 20/02/2019 21:39

Was it made in an EU country? Could it have been deported due to Brexit?

Passing4Human · 20/02/2019 21:39

I'd check with the letting agent to make sure that no one has had cause to need access to the flat for any maintenance reasons or anything at all. I know they're supposed to tell you, but be worth double checking.

Averysmallcasserole · 20/02/2019 21:40

Definitely fallen into a space you don’t know exists. Or has eloped with the Lancashire ironing board

reenchantmentofeverydaylife · 20/02/2019 21:40

Likewise Jebuschristchocolatebar - the Mary Poppins bag theory, another great chuckler!

onemorego2019 · 20/02/2019 21:41

Is it your own ironing board or did it come with the flat/furnishings?

If it did I would suggest your land lord or someone connected to him has entered the flat and taken it. I know you say they don't know the code but there is always a master key/code for such things.

rslsys · 20/02/2019 21:42

When you put it back in the cupboard, did you accidently put it outside the front door by mistake? From where Management have removed it.

1Raconteur · 20/02/2019 21:44

When you had someone stay over, whilst you were in the shower, they placed it outside your door, when you saw them out, they didn't have it, soon as you shut door, they were free to lift it and walk off with it. Given the info I would suspect the letting agent or landlord has been round and lifted it. Or at a real push, previous tenant and locks never changed.

theworldistoosmall · 20/02/2019 21:46

If you're concerned someone has entered the place, change the lock barrels. Cheap and easy to do. Just keep the barrels and keys somewhere safe so you can change them when you move out (and make a note on your phone where you've put them)

BlueGlasses · 20/02/2019 21:53

Do you have a cleaner?

DobbinsVeil · 20/02/2019 21:56

Surely the bike in the cupboard would be a more attractive bet than the ironing board? *And it's easier to act nonchalant with a stolen bike than a stolen ironing board

*I don't have any actual thieving experience

HugoBearsMummy · 20/02/2019 22:02

Sorry I'm placemarking too Grin

anniehm · 20/02/2019 22:04

Whenever I loose things it's usually in plain sight! Has it got something drying over it? Behind a door is another favourite "lost" place. Fallen behind a cupboard?

JessieMcJessie · 20/02/2019 22:16

Is it yours or the landlord’s? If it’s the landlord’s it will be on the check in inventory and you’ll have to pay for it when you move out. Maybe the landlord is in league with the concierge to commit some sort of complex inventory-related fraud....
When you last used it, can you picture yourself folding it up and putting it away.

Oh and if the cupboard only has a bike and a box in it, where do you keep the vacuum cleaner? Or has that gone awol too? 😀

HeronLanyon · 20/02/2019 22:20

frogzthat read like Dr Seuss !

RhiWrites · 20/02/2019 22:20

Down the side of a chest of drawers? In the warderobe? I lost one a couple of weeks ago and found it in the first place.

Mine is a small table top one though. Maybe you should get one of them OP? Besides buying a new ironing board will summon the old one out of the void.

CanuckBC · 20/02/2019 22:21

No idea where it could be. Blending into something? Under the bed or in your closet in your room?

It’s definitely odd for just the ironing board to be gone. There is probably a simple answer to this. I want to go look!

HeronLanyon · 20/02/2019 22:24

Has anyone stayed, ironed and broken it without telling you ?
Is it lying flat on the floor under your bed for some reason (hiding from you)?
Is it flat against the back of that cupboard and somehow invisible because of that ?
This is really odd. I too live central London flat. I can see my ironing board and not letting it out of my sight for a bit.
Have you had an electrician or similar who had to move it to do something and left it ousidenthe door by mistake. Did you leave it outside your door for some reason?
Do you sleep walk ??

Stickmanslittleleaf · 20/02/2019 22:34

Touch the top of your head. Is it there? I've put my spare glasses on to search for my normal glasses and not found them until I looked in the mirror to put my face on, I'd walked past plenty of mirrors in my hunt (with and without my spares on) and not noticed until I actually stood and looked. Even then it took a minute or so, I think I'd had one eye lined before I realised.
Look for something else and you'll find it.

Valentinesschmalentines · 20/02/2019 22:35

OP please let us know the outcome if there is one. I hope you go back tomorrow and find it and feel silly (only because that’s the most comforting result!) but do let us know.

IndieTara · 20/02/2019 22:36

Really need to know the outcome!

Glitterblue · 20/02/2019 22:52

I want to go and look for it!

AlanThePig · 20/02/2019 23:00

Any good surf near you? 😂
