AIBU to ask you to explain missing ironing board

Hi,

This may seem trivial to some but it has totally freaked me out to the extent I am spending the night with friends. Please help me see reason!

Yesterday, I had a meeting which required a more formal outfit that was nice and crisp. I have an ironing board which is rarely used but ha ALWAYS been placed in the coat cupboard in my corridor by the front door. However, when I went to retrieve it yesterday it was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I am disturbed as I can come up with no logical explanation as to why it was missing. The last time I used it was 3 ish weeks ago.

  • I live on my own in C. London
  • My visitors arrive on foot, tube etc
  • I would notice if they walked off with the ironing board- it is 100% not in the flat.
  • Why steal a rarely used ironing board
-I live in a secure building with the concierge (until 7 pm)

AIBU to ask you to please explain this. I'm really unnerved. Am I crazy? What would your natural reaction to this be?

Behind the bookcase?

PhilomenaButterfly · 22/02/2019 09:03

An acquaintance had a household ghost called Georgie. If she ever lost anything, she'd say, "Put it back Georgie," and it would be there the next morning. Usually keys and things though, I don't know if he could have managed an ironing board.

Bagpuss5 · 22/02/2019 09:05

Has someone suggested that it is with the iron.

Purrrplexed · 22/02/2019 09:07

I don't have much furniture so literally every big piece has been moved.

This thread is so stressful

I never knew I was capable of caring so much about the ironing board of a total stranger

hippoherostandinghere · 22/02/2019 09:14

Can you take a photo of the cupboard and post it? That would really help us all understand a bit better.

BuildingBackUp · 22/02/2019 09:14

Op we had the same a few months ago.

Rarely used ironing board that I’d had out about a week earlier and always kept in one cupboard... and then vanished.

It didn’t overly bother me as there are 5 of us here so more margin for someone ‘loosing’ it. But I also ‘knew’ 100% it wasn’t here and it was a constant niggle.

I found it about 4 months later. It was on top of the kitchen wall cupboards, lying flat, completely invisible from everywhere unless you stood on the kitchen counter.

We still don’t know how it got there...obviously couldn’t have been the dc as it’s too high, I have no memory of it and dh swears it wasn’t him Confused

I know it’s more likely that either dh or I put it there than someone sneaking in to hide it though Grin

I would say yours is probably still there, hiding in plain sight. It’s the most likely explanation! Wink

Please keep us posted, however lame the outcome might turn out to be!
Am still laughing about a PP's back half of her caravan being stolen but not by the disgruntled manager who came to work by bus!

Purrrplexed · 22/02/2019 09:23

There is no animosity between ex and me. Highly doubt he's involved especially given he no longer has a key.

I will take a photo of the cupboard and post later.

Goodness me, this is intriguing ..... I should be working, can't concentrate now. Sod that deadline .....

Love your flat!!

BalloonSlayer · 22/02/2019 09:25

Can't believe I am joining in - could FWB have put it on top of the washer & dryer as an "obvious place to store it" and it fell down behind them?

homegrownmumma · 22/02/2019 09:29

Inside the wardrobe ? This is bizarre

Itsallamysterytome · 22/02/2019 09:35

Pop a light hearted ' I know this is the strangest question you will have been asked but ......... ' note through your neighbours doors.
Make it a bit like your original post.
They may be able to help you.

DobbinsVeil · 22/02/2019 10:10

Did you forget to remove it when you put your shirt on and it's still on your back?

Do you know anyone with a huge magnet that you could borrow? You could then walk around the flat a bit like a water diviner, but instead of water, ironing boards.

DobbinsVeil · 22/02/2019 10:12

Is the ironing board cover a full size selfie of you? Maybe you've mistaken it for a mirror/reflection.

steppemum · 22/02/2019 10:16

I am very struck by the posted who said - where is your iron? Has that gone too? because if so it does suggest someone has taken it to use.

fluffyhamster · 22/02/2019 10:24

Are all or several of the flats managed by the same letting agent?
Does the ironing board belong to you, or did it come with the flat?

Is it possible one of the other flats is being advertised for rental and doesn't have an ironing board, so the letting agent has come in and taken yours, so that the other flat is "fully equipped" ?

I think you can safely assume letting agents will lie about whether they have been in a property - especially if they are required by the contract to give 24 hours notice and haven't!

mentallyfacked · 22/02/2019 10:29

Place marking, am invested now.

Mine is usually hiding under a pile of clothes that I keep meaning to iron....

JessieMcJessie · 22/02/2019 10:37

She said a few pages back that the iron is on the shelf where it’s always kept.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 22/02/2019 10:46

This is seriously bugging me!

Wuddlingheights · 22/02/2019 10:49

I’m going to need to know the outcome so this is a blatant placemarker....

Supersoaker10 · 22/02/2019 11:20

First thing I did this morning was get up and check my ironing board is still there.........unfortunately it is Grin

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 22/02/2019 11:33

You need to look with your hands not your eyes (to misquote my MIL) - rub your hands along the walls of the tall cupboards, in between the fridge and whatever, and behind all the doors.

Hereward1332 · 22/02/2019 11:41

Only possible explanation is that you are in the wrong flat.
