AIBU to ask you to explain missing ironing board

Hi,

This may seem trivial to some but it has totally freaked me out to the extent I am spending the night with friends. Please help me see reason!

Yesterday, I had a meeting which required a more formal outfit that was nice and crisp. I have an ironing board which is rarely used but ha ALWAYS been placed in the coat cupboard in my corridor by the front door. However, when I went to retrieve it yesterday it was NOWHERE TO BE SEEN. I am disturbed as I can come up with no logical explanation as to why it was missing. The last time I used it was 3 ish weeks ago.

  • I live on my own in C. London
  • My visitors arrive on foot, tube etc
  • I would notice if they walked off with the ironing board- it is 100% not in the flat.
  • Why steal a rarely used ironing board
-I live in a secure building with the concierge (until 7 pm)

AIBU to ask you to please explain this. I'm really unnerved. Am I crazy? What would your natural reaction to this be?

Only possible explanation is that you are in the wrong flat.

Or bored / lonely / odd OP who changes her name and starts a thread in hope of pricking people’s interest and keeping them engaged for the (non-existing) mystery.

Not the first and won’t be the last

Redwinestillfine · 22/02/2019 11:52

You probably just put it somewhere unusual and can't remember. I put the butter away in a cupboard last week. It took me ages to find it. Thought I was going mad!

GiveMeFiveMinutes · 22/02/2019 12:38

I am way too over invested in this thread.

Could you do a walk through video of your flat and post it? We could all look for any hidden places it might be.

LittleSF · 22/02/2019 13:35

@steppemum the OP said that the iron was on the empty bookshelf in the hall where she left it. This is the most intriguing thread ever...

Letthemysterybe · 22/02/2019 13:57

I read about a thing called something like ‘object blindness’ or similar. Basically when we search for something we have a picture of it in our head, and if the object is not facing the same way/in another position , we can be completely blind to it even if it is right in front of us. So when you are looking for something you need to consciously picture it in your head in your minds eye in various orientations. So close you eyes op and picture the ironing board lying down on its side etc etc etc

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/02/2019 15:36

I have just seen an ironing board.

Propped up against a tree just off the North Circular.
(Or could be just leaning there to wait for a break in the traffic so it can cross)

WildFlower2019 · 22/02/2019 15:50

I wish I lived nearby so I could help you look.

MTBMummy · 22/02/2019 16:33

Have you checked under your beds? Did a friend borrow it when staying over to iron something of theirs and then put it away in the wrong place like a wardrobe in the bedroom?

BrinkPink · 22/02/2019 17:00

It's had enough of London and is hitching to Scotland.

Toooldtocareanymore · 22/02/2019 17:02

I so want to come round and have a look, I popped back to this posting to see if it had showed up, and interrogate your neighbours, and concierge about whether anyone was let in , I assume you don't have a cleaner- it was probably asked but I haven't read the middle 10 pages or so.

Used to have a lecturer at college who had a story he told about object blindness, it went abridged version, he had bookcase in his office behind desk, every book was cherished/ needed for work, there was a place for every book, a colleague wanted to borrow one he agreed so long as it was returned safely, this was normal they often shared resources in department, be one or other in borrowing something most days, subsequently he needed book it wasn't there so he asked colleague, who said I returned it saw you put on shelf, he didn't recall but went back searched shelves not there, asked the secretary from outside office she said to him it wasn't outside, she looked around office and colleagues office, he systematically took every book down checked them and returned to place the book was missing ..he asked colleague again he searched too couldn't find it, he said he always harboured resentment for this book that was never returned, he got another copy but it wasn't the same , it had different cover and anyway he resented having to replace it, he checked at home, in briefcases, asked students who had access to his room, not that he could think of any reason they would borrow it -it was an obscure topic , anyway some time passed during which the books on shelves often used , he said certainly weekly if not daily, the secretary was leaving job, she came into his office one day said I swapped chairs with you ages ago when my back was bad do you want your chair back he hadn't noticed swap but said yes they swapped chairs , it was higher up, he sat at desk and immediately saw the missing book on shelf- he said it was not replaced by anyone as shelves full, he was emphatic it was his change of perspective meant he saw it differently

Cbuss1982 · 22/02/2019 17:42

This happened to me- lost my keys- house and car keys three weeks ago!! They must be in my house as I drove home!! No sign still!! So stressful!!

Bagpuss5 · 22/02/2019 17:43

Some emergency came up or some very serious news and you did something with the ironing board when stressed and anxious and it is wiped from your mind.
Also where is the iron?

SaturdayNext · 22/02/2019 18:02

You put it outside when your mind was on something else and someone thought it was rubbish and took it away.

Or it's under your bed/by the fridge/by or in a cupboard/behind the door.

headinhands · 22/02/2019 18:09

*@Cbuss1982 look in the lock of a different, unused door. Lost mine few weeks ago. Found them rammed in the patio door hidden behind a curtain

Springwalk · 22/02/2019 18:16

Has anything else gone missing?
I would get CCTV

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/02/2019 18:17

I have 2 ironing boards (and never use either) - you are welcome to one of them OP!

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 22/02/2019 18:18

Your flat is possibly the new headquarters of U.N.C.L.E.
OP, are you involved in international espionage? Grin

Cbuss1982 · 22/02/2019 18:21

@headinhands nope checked and only a back door and front door!! In neither!! Thanks though

thatwhichwecallarose · 22/02/2019 18:32

“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth“

You yourself have eliminated anyone you have invited in and taking it or anyone getting themselves in (two codes, concierge not seen anyone etc.). So by all deduction you have done something with it and can’t remember what. Ironing boards don’t just walk themselves out.

dragonsfire · 22/02/2019 18:45

OMG this is crazy!

I really hope you find it for your own sanity - also I think would be fine to knock on the neighbours doors and ask if saw an ironing board in the hallway?

It’s good reason to introduce yourself to!

SabineUndine · 22/02/2019 18:56

Hey, I once had a completely random potato peeler appear from nowhere. I live on my own and nobody who visited had left it. It had clearly fallen into my knife drawer through a wormhole in the space-time continuum.

SecondRow · 22/02/2019 19:06

You say your ex no longer has a key? Do you use a physical key as well as the two pass codes?

What if he came round to collect his bike, found the ironing board standing in front of the bike and absent-mindedly went off with it instead?

Mummyto2munchkins · 22/02/2019 19:30

I've lost the bottom parts to the cot bed. Just gone to set it up for DC2, nowhere to be seen!
Hope the ironing board is found soon! (and I hope it brings wine for the stress!)

sprot · 22/02/2019 19:55

Oh no after 15 pages still no sign of the ib

JuniperBeer · 22/02/2019 20:09

Behind the fridge?!
