I didn’t think I’d be rich but I am cringing at my Facebook ‘memories’ and pretty sure everyone was laughing at me behind my back.

OP posts:

Years ago I think these party events would have been fun.
Lots of people getting together and buying decent stuff at a time when there wasn't much choice available and a lot of women didn't drive and had kids in tow. So a party would be a nice evening out.
Nowadays most of the stuff is expensive and not very good.
I went to a pampered chef one at my friends insistance.
I didn't buy anything, I don't cook!
My friend did and the thing cracked and broke within the first month! It was very expensive too.

IncrediblySadToo · 24/02/2019 17:11

I don’t do FB etc so I don’t get pissed off by the mlm shite very often, but a friend of a friend invited my friend around for a coffee and said if I was free to go too. Turned up and it was a Forever Living sales pitch. Grrrrrrr. No bloody 🍰either!

Post an apology on FB for being a twat & move on 💐

After buying one abroad over a decade ago, I did Thermomix for 2 years. Did reasonably well but eventually gave up as just got sick of "selling" and driving to demos. It is MLM essentially but its also the most amazing gadget that I've ever owned - even my hubby who is the most sceptical person I know uses it daily. Just adding this for balance ! However in fairness there is no way I'd ever want to sell any of the skincare mlms and only sold Thermomix as I knew it was a good & solid product - what was annoying though was the constant push to recruit but I'm guessing that's how they make their money.

notsurewhatshappening · 24/02/2019 18:04

Is thermomix really worth the money though? How is it better than my trusty €14.99 stick blender that's lasted me for 12 years? (Genuine question- sorry if that sounds rude).

TartanTrousers · 24/02/2019 18:32

Surprisingly it was mentioned within the first few minutes so luckily I didn’t have to sit through the spiel.

I quickly ended the call though.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 24/02/2019 18:42

I have no idea what a thermomix is so I just googled. £964 for what is just a fancy blender. I have a hand blender that cost a fiver and a bullet type blender that cost less than £40 both I have been using for years.
Who in their right mind is going to pay that sort of money without a high pressure sell?

SoyDora · 24/02/2019 18:44

£964?!!

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 24/02/2019 18:46

thermomix.vorwerk.co.uk/pricey £964 but you get a free cook book

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 24/02/2019 18:47

£964? For real?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 24/02/2019 18:58

Yep stupid money and I was getting pissed off with my MLM bot trying to sell me £20 hair treatments.

AgentCooper · 24/02/2019 20:03

@GunpowderGelatine I felt really hurt when someone tried to sell me Arbonne for DS’s eczema. I knew her through a baby group and at the start of each group we all talked about what kind of a week we’d had. She knew how bad it was. I honestly felt like replying (she pitched via WhatsApp) why don’t you come round at 6am one morning, when i’ve been up all night and in the two hours i’ve managed to get me and DS both sleeping he’s managed to get his wee paws loose and scratch himself silly. Yep, come and see me crying, holding my 4 month old who is covered in blood and screaming and see if you have the balls to try and sell your shite to my face. I’ve never considered her anything close to a friend since.

Cunts the lot of them.

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 20:20

@AgentCooper Sad there's definitely a huge element of preying on women and mothers in particular - but this miracle treatment otherwise you're a bad mum Angry

I can relate with the itchy nights, the blood on the babygro etc it's utterly heartbreaking and I was willing to try anything. Turns out Child's Farm lotion (recommend by national eczema society) a low steroid cream and barrier cream all over works a treat on mine. Takes 30 minutes each child per night to apply but worth it when you think that it's otherwise hours and hours of itching

Jencottage · 24/02/2019 20:22

That's true - it's a great big whack of money. I've used mine for years but I've given up selling them as you do start eyeing everyone up that you meet with as a "potential" and all the driving to demos and push to recruit got tiring. But what I use mine for, I make my own oat and nut milks as we are non dairy, so no preservatives and saves a bit. I make porridge in the morning, it chops a salad and mixes the dressing in like three seconds, I make lemonade in it, it can dry roast and grind spices and makes the most amazing curry. It steams food, can knead doughs and cake mixtures. Basically it's a complete kitchen in a tiny wee machine and in a lot of European countries (I discovered mine in the early 2000s in Germany) most households have one. So yes, a lot of money and I wouldn't buy one if I was only going to blend with it, it won't mend split ends, doesn't cure cancer, but makes everything taste amazing with practically no effort and my 8 yr old can make a risotto in it.

Tropic is definitely an MLM. Why do you mean about avoiding MLMs?

SnagAndChips · 17/03/2019 22:06

I cringe when I see MLM posts on FB- they are always about 'living your best life ever' (rather than not bothering to live???).

Tupperware are pretty insidious. Presented as a friend's gathering and wam- 'what will you buy'. A bloody jug for 50quid? I'd rather buy a supermarket one for a fiver. Still the managers etc need to get paid.

Be relieved you have seen the light and post a heartfelt apology to all those you have harassed. MLMs are a disgrace.

Rarotonga · 17/03/2019 22:28

Sorry you've experienced this OP. You aren't the first and certainly won't be the last to be taken in by these schemes. I would never laugh at those I know who are involved, I just feel a bit sorry for them as it never ends well.

Dust yourself off and move on with your life. No point fretting over things you can't change.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/03/2019 22:43

Tropic most definitely is an MLM!

Scattyhattie · 18/03/2019 00:18

The person i know sucked into MLM, tbh I just think its sad that while buying into this get rich dream they're missing out on living a more fulfilling life as all time outside of the day job goes on mlm by attending various events, FB or to travelling to sell to someone.
I honestly think they could've earned more just getting an extra part-time job & still had more time to themselves.

I wouldn't say they're naive but are overly motivated by the money side & totally sucked into the brainwashing motivational bollocks.
Gave some rot he'd absorbed about " why work your socks off for someone else to profit? " but its not your own business as all above in MLM chain are profiting from the hardwork instead but your not getting the benefits of being an employee either.

Islas1183 · 18/03/2019 11:00

How would you know tropic is an mlm company ? Have you worked for them ?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 18/03/2019 11:06

Errr no and I'm not likely to either! But it's a fact that Tropic is MLM. It's not a matter of opinion.

GunpowderGelatine · 18/03/2019 14:28

@Islas1183 do you work for Tropic?

If so can you explain how something that is 50p in Superdrug or Primark can be sold for £8? Or how 5 piddly little powders can go for a "special offer" of almost £70? (See below images). I could buy premium products from Debenhams for half that price. It has the hallmark of MLM - no products in shops, touted "at home" by pretty much exclusively women/mums, and comes with an astronomical price tag but with the company history, proof of quality or brand loyalty to to warrant such big costs

GunpowderGelatine · 18/03/2019 14:33

This morning on the school run a Tropic "ambassador" mum called out to me how I would LOVE the new make up products - they'd launched some new stuff over the weekend and I saw the madness unfold on Facebook with grown women "jumping up and down with excitement" over eyeliner. She said how it's great because you can simply buy an empty palette and fill it with the make-up you want by buying the individual little inserts. Meaning you can buy a palette with stuff or actually want in rather than only using 2 powders out of 12. I said yeah it's great, just like what they do in Primark Grin

The founder of Tropic seems to have claimed to have this "revolutionary" idea for pick-your-own makeup and I feel sorry for the people working for Primark who already thought of it and have had it out for some time, she has essentially nicked that idea and passed it off as her own. Except hers are probably the same quality but about 14x the price

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 18/03/2019 14:52

£8 for a make up sponge GrinGrin

morningstress · 18/03/2019 14:53

@GunpowderGelatine loads of makeup brands have done that for years, MAC are very known for it (and at least their products are good!).
