Name changed as outing.

We have saved so hard for this new bathroom. We have reconfigured it and had everything new. Stripped to bare brick.

I really don't like it :-(

We still want to put a shelf up behind the toilet with some nice things on, and a towel storer where 3 towels will be rolled up at once in there.

Please be honest. Be as brutal as needed. I want to change the paint I think but no idea what to. We need to get a blind. What else can I do to make this the dream bathroom I envisaged Blush

I think it looks good, OP, you just need finishing touches. I would....

  • put a large, colourful picture on the wall (If you do this you really don’t need to paint the walls another colour)
  • put up wooden blinds which match the colour of your floor
  • put a luxurious bath mat on the floor (I love my big fluffy one from Ikea) and matching towels on the towel rail.
  • personally, I think you could have had a more interesting mirror (but this is just personal taste - I prefer the look of mirrors with a decent rim!)

In no time you’ll find your bathroom more cosy. It is a lovely bathroom!

bigsister951 · 22/02/2019 17:48

God I bet you wished you haven’t asked!

Lookingforadvice123 · 22/02/2019 17:52

It's lovely, I don't like the cream walls so just paint it a new colour!

SoVogue · 22/02/2019 18:13

I haven't RTFT but it's a lovely bathroom just a bit bare!

I'd paint the walls a warm cream, pop some colourful pictures on the walls and a big plant in the corner, a fluffy bath mat and some candles and diffusers will make it feel gorgeous!

Bagpuss5 · 22/02/2019 18:19

The floor is quite dark, I would put a nice, bright and arty striped cotton rug on the floor. I would also put a hook/hooks on the wall - so handy for clothes when you are undressing or for a nice matching towel.
Once you have a pretty blind it will give a big splash of colour on that wall.

zippey · 22/02/2019 18:22

It’s nice. But if I was being critical, I prefer the toilet and sink to be next to each other. Shower also could be a bit bigger.

SpeakUpXXWomen · 22/02/2019 19:31

You want potted palms or trees either side of that bath, hang them from the ceiling 70s style if you can't be arsed with floor cleaning hassle Grin

Elianna · 22/02/2019 20:05

Op grey would look fab, it will give your bathroom a more contemporary look. I have attached some file pics

What is the obsession with dreary greys that look cold and dark?

It won't go with your very warm wood floor OP

TatianaLarina · 22/02/2019 20:18

Grey generally looks like a lunatic asylum unless you have very expensive finishes.

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2019 20:21

I adore my very very dark grey bathroom everything else white. All shampoos and things look great and have a truly great rug. Prints look great on gray. You just need to get lighting right or inagreemit can look a bit grim!! Low light. Goodnlight over mirror. Reading light for bath etc.

Smotheroffive · 22/02/2019 20:24

Yes, I was thinking hospitals! and also like grey cement unfinished walls. Very depressing.

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 22/02/2019 20:31

I think it's beautiful, for me though the floor is too dark, I would have gone floor to ceiling tiles and put some pictures or something on the walls

ForgivenessIsDivine · 22/02/2019 20:32

I can't believe there are over 800 posts!! Mostly people telling the OP her floor, bathroom layout, tiles and window are somehow 'wrong'. NONE OF THESE THINGS CAN BE EASILY CHANGED; SHE HAS SPENT * YEARS SAVING TO GET THIS DONE!!

There are lots of great suggestions about colour and accessories though!!

Smotheroffive · 22/02/2019 20:35

I suggested continuing the tiling around from the bath, as did others, because that doesn't mean altering anything else. Of course, yes, some.accessorising. most also said its lovely.

HeronLanyon · 22/02/2019 21:08

forgiveness I think those are in a real minority ?? There’s been so much envy and support for op having what I never knew existed ‘new bathroom wobble’. It just needs new paint and to be moved into !!

Toolonguntilthenextholiday · 22/02/2019 22:45

It’s the design - an accumulation of free standing furniture that does not really come together as a ‘room‘. The units as such and the floor are all nice.

expat101 · 23/02/2019 03:17

I mentioned before that I wasn't a fan of the white/cream combo, but today in one of the mags I was flicking through, a bedroom had been painted that colour and had a duck egg ''blue'' bedspread. It really made it very nice. I just think you need to add the decorative touches.

MonsterKidz · 23/02/2019 03:23

Do you still need advice OP?

I’m not sure if everything has been covered!

llizzie · 23/02/2019 04:13

Why not wait a bit to decide on colours, etc. You might want something completely different in the summer, or you may see a set of towels and mats that you like. Better to live with plain for a few months rather than make a mistake you have to live with. It is really all a matter of cost and what you can afford. If you intend to have tiles, make sure you have all the fittings you want, like soap/shampoo dispensers on the wall that will save having bottles falling off the shelves.

At least you have not invested in a loo with pointed edges to dig in the backs of knees when performing. I just cannot understand why anyone would install pointed things in bathrooms, especially as most bathrooms are so small if you fainted or fell down you would hit a corner before the floor. Some baths and washbasins are very dangerous, but you have been sensible in that respect. Another hate of mine (and last year I was house hunting) are the deep baths that have become fashionable, at a time when the world is concerned about climate change and blaming it on people who use too much energy. Immagine the cost of heating the water to fill up a deep bath when half the world has no access to drinking water. I wonder how many of the children on strike last week against climate change have deep baths and centrally heated homes?

llizzie · 23/02/2019 04:17

Grey is awful anywhere. It has been proven to have a depressing effect on people, which is probably why someone on Gumtree is trying to sell their kitchen at half price! I cannot think of a worse colour. No one can be happy for long in a world without colour - even in the smallest room.

If you’re partial to blue, you’re in luck: According to Zillow, blue rooms substantially increase the value of your home. Blue bathrooms top the list, adding up to “$5,400 more than expected to the sale price.” With so many shades to choose from, which blue gives you the most bang for your buck? Zillow’s report says that light blue bathrooms are best, although any blue seems to work.

Here’s a roundup of 25 inspiring blue bathroom ideas and tips to beautify your space and increase your home’s value.

LadyB49 · 23/02/2019 04:49

I'd suggest you do what I did to my new bathroom.
Li me green roller blind from Dunelm sale £6.
Hand towels and face flannels in lime green and yellow rolled up in a basket.
Lime green bucket holding pieces of driftwood that I gathered from the beach.

A big yellow fake flower mine's 12" diameter propped up on top of the wall cabinet. A branch of artificial daisies, white with yellow centres and green leaves over the mirror.
It all looks sharp and fresh. My walls are white as they are tiled. One wall is charcoal cladding. Floor is charcoal tiles.
Choose toiletries to colour coordinate.

My splashes of colour cost next to nothing.

Imperfectsusan · 23/02/2019 07:34

The plants in the window are nice but need to be much bigger to have an impact. I think a combination of pictures, a blind, bigger plants, towel and rug accessories , and toiletries will do the trick. The room is just undressed at the moment.

ProseccoSupernova · 23/02/2019 07:49

I’ve not read the full 33 pages but agree with some of the early comments.. all it needs is the wall painted bright white rather than magnolia, which is clashing with the tiles. Then add some colourful accessories. This is the simplest and cheapest option to fix it. All the fittings look great.
