Name changed as outing.

We have saved so hard for this new bathroom. We have reconfigured it and had everything new. Stripped to bare brick.

I really don't like it :-(

We still want to put a shelf up behind the toilet with some nice things on, and a towel storer where 3 towels will be rolled up at once in there.

Please be honest. Be as brutal as needed. I want to change the paint I think but no idea what to. We need to get a blind. What else can I do to make this the dream bathroom I envisaged Blush

Just returned to add my vote on the side of those that like the floor.

While the right shade of grey (or any of a variety of strong colours) would work on the walls, I think I would try white first.

I don't think you need more tiles, what you have makes perfect sense.

Agree with a blind and other decorations to finish it off.

I think the only existing thing that needs changing is the paint colour.

80sMum · 21/02/2019 09:20

I think you would be wise to replace the shower screen with shower doors, to fully enclose the shower cubicle. Your shower tray is too shallow to reliably prevent overflow.

My mother has a similar shower arrangement to yours, with the same type of shallow tray and open ended screen, except her shower enclosure is larger (1400x900). The shower overflowed when first used. We had to reduce the water pressure to the shower to the absolute minimum.

Do those advocating tiling the whole room not have children?! Or not remember what they were like?

Children splash. The floor gets wet and slippery. Cracked heads. And tiles all over the walls make it look as if you are just about to perform an autopsy.

I have the height of naffness - a corner bath. However, it has been brilliant for dcs as it is shallowish and I could do bath time without killing my back. And the large surround means that water doesn't flow over the sides.

DinaCaliente · 21/02/2019 09:46

Get some smart colour changing lighting in there, something like Phillips Hue bulbs in the spots.

Then you can have different looks any time you want.

SlipperOrchid · 21/02/2019 09:52

I have fully tiled bathrooms and have young children. There really isn’t enough room to run around and slip in them.

I grew up in the 70s/80s when Lino on both kitchen and bathroom floors was commonplace. Undoubtedly more a cost factor than a style or safety one.

Any falls incurred have been on kitchen tiles, never the bathrooms.

LuckyMarmiteLover · 21/02/2019 10:15

@Swizzlefizzlefoo - the wall tiles are these:

And the floor tiles are LVT from Harvey Maria:

Alsohuman · 21/02/2019 10:21

Do not tile the walls. Just don’t. Especially if you think you might want to sell your house in the lifetime of this bathroom. There’s a circle of hell reserved for people who fully tile bathrooms.

PalmTree101 · 21/02/2019 10:24

There’s a circle of hell reserved for people who fully tile bathrooms.

That bathroom is too big IMO for fully tiled, but in small bathrooms it makes much more sense and makes the room feel bigger.

DifferentWorldNow · 21/02/2019 10:35

I think it's because you've tried to mix warm and cool colours and they are jarring at the moment.

The floor is warm, though could probably go with cool too, the walls are warm and the tiles and bathroom suite are cool.

I'm not sure if you try to mix it up more it might work as you'd be diluting and merging warms and cool together? So maybe by the cold bath and sink some warm towels, stripes would be perfect with warm and cool together! Plants tend to be cool which would be good against the warm wall, I would try a blind with cools and warm together if such a thing exists, then a cool rug or bath mat and cool pictures on the warm walls.

Or just change the tiles! Or wall colour. And stick to one temperature tone .

Atthebottomofthegarden · 21/02/2019 10:36

Repaint the magnolia and add a blind, a plant and a picture and you’ll be away. I think I’d go grey (as dark as you dare!) on the walls which will work with the tiles and make the white your accent colour. Duck egg or white would also work.
Personally I’m quite happy with either roman or roller blinds, and I’m not so keen on shutters or wooden blinds. But that’s very personal. I think roman blinds would work well with the half tiled wall. I’d go for a grey pattern I think, but you can decide if it wants more colour than that after the repaint.

SlipperOrchid · 21/02/2019 10:46

Alsohuman.

In big bathrooms, they don’t gain anything aesthetically from being fully tiled, the look can lend itself to being compared to a swimming pool changing room. However, small bathrooms/en-suites look FAR better fully tiled. Nice and uniform as opposed to too many colours and chipped/worn paintwork.

Alsohuman · 21/02/2019 10:53

There are alternatives to fully tiled boxes and scuffed paint. I,m irrational on this one because it’s a look I hate so much. My bathroom hasn’t got a single solitary tile in it!

3luckystars · 21/02/2019 11:24

Its all about the undertones. You know when something is not right in a room but you can't explain it.
If something in the room has red undertones, and the paint has greeny undertones, it will make both of them stand out more and clash.

I think change the paint and start there. You have no 'stuff' in there yet. Once you move your things in and arrange them, then things will improve.

ponzusoup · 21/02/2019 11:32

It's a brilliant basic fit with a great finish. Now the fun starts. I'd paint it a really dark grey , get a huge gold mirror and go for hot pink accessories and a big plant. But I do have bold taste. Have fun with it. It's a room that you don't hang out in for hours so be bold! Like the idea of wallpaper too but that is a faff. Pinterest is your friend. Good thing is it's saleable if you ever need to sell a can be made bland or funky. Indulge your inner diva!

3luckystars · 21/02/2019 11:47

Yes, I think the word is a vignette. That's what you need. It basically a bit of you in there, on a tray or shelves.

It is going to be lovely.

I'm not a fan of the colour in the wall. It's a bit meh. I'd also consider tiling round behind the toilet, up to the shower. Then maybe a different colour paint? The wall where the sink is is fine, the towel rack will brighten that up. I'm about to redo mine and this is my worst fear!!!

FanSpamTastic · 21/02/2019 12:13

Hi OP

If you want to see how it would look in different colours try the Dulux Visualiser app. You can take a photo of how it is now then see how it would look with different paint colours on the wall.

overtheirishsea · 21/02/2019 12:14

Blinds needed

LittleMissMarker · 21/02/2019 12:21

I think it will look fine once you have towels, mats and accessories. It needs either naturals, or bold colours and big patterns. Dainty patterns and old-fashioned florals will clash with that chunky industrial look.

MamaBear2181 · 21/02/2019 12:34

It’s lovely just needs a bit of personalisation and a splash of colour, def a blind for the window x

AnotherEmma · 21/02/2019 12:38

"I've woken up thinking dark faux wooden blind to match the floor, white walls, dusky pink and grey towels and accessories, a shelf, wall art, green tones thrown in somewhere."

Sounds lovely but use pink or green, not both. Maybe choose the towel colours when you've repainted and fitted the blind. Better still post a photo on here and we'll all tell you what to do Grin

melovechocolate · 21/02/2019 12:50

Nothing wrong with it at all as a blank canvas, just needs a bit of personality to elevate it. Personally I would lose the cream walls and go with a 'wow' colour like teal, get a big statement plant in a nice pot (a fern overhanging the bath perhaps). Wooden blind or shutter in the same colour as the floor. Some art to hang above the loo, maybe a vintage chair stacked with colourful towels... you get the idea! Will look lovely.

callymarch · 21/02/2019 13:01

how about this

To ask you to look at this pic of my new bathroom and tell me why I hate it!
Chocchip88 · 21/02/2019 13:10

I would paint the walls a similar colour to the tiles and add white wooden/wooden look blinds to the window. Then accessorise with candles, towels etc. Have a look on instagram 'myfirsthomebyclaire' has similar tiles and hers looks beautiful.

Canyoutellwhoiamyet · 21/02/2019 13:11

@callymarch -amazing! Seriously! How did you do that? I really want to try it with dark grey as opposed to blue.

Thanks so much for that!

@anotheremma that's my plan don't worry... paint it then report back and let the world of MN decide for me Grin

Just been and got loads of testers. Going to paint on some card and see :)
