AIBU to ask if it is normal to call to say you are in front of a McDonalds?

My husband really likes us cell phone and he calls people all of the time, calls me all of the time, looks at funny pictures, plays cell phone games and so on...

So he phoned me to tell me he was in front of a McDonalds and he was going to go in. AIBU to think this is odd?

AIBU to ask you if you think there is some deeper sense like he might be sad, stressed, afraid or do people just do this nowadays and is it just normal and I suck at being a millennial because I don’t do this.
(He told me he wasn’t afraid or sad).

I was asking her what kind of issues HER dh had because she said her dh has issues.

I realise that I just find it very odd that you locked onto that one post when most of the posts have said its perfectly normal. It looks to me like you want validation that his behaviour is linked to issues, rather than being a normal part of a relationship hence why you asked what issues that posters DH had.

AryaStarkWolf · 19/02/2019 11:19

Me and my DH call eachother multiple times a day to tell eachother stupid shit, wouldn't have it any other way tbh and we aren't even millennials :p

purplelass · 19/02/2019 11:19

My exH used to be like this - he'd email me constantly when I was at work and if I didn't reply within 20 mins he'd chase me up to see why not. He was way too needy and self centred and I felt like I never had real time to myself.

My DP now rarely messages me unless it's to arrange something, maybe a few times a week, but when he does it's nice coz I know he's thinking of me.

Sounds to me like you & DH's needs for contact are a bit mismatched? Better to speak to him about it before it becomes too big an issue I'd say...

glamorousgrandmother · 19/02/2019 11:20

I am a Baby Boomer and don't think his behaviour is odd at all. I do things like this sometimes.

ScrumpyCrack · 19/02/2019 11:21

You sound like a misery, OP.

Redglitter · 19/02/2019 11:22

He often phones because of reasons I do not understand, for example to ask which kind of yoghurt I want or to tell me he is in a traffic jam

I cant see why thats hard to understand. They sound like perfectly reasonable reasons to call.

glamorousgrandmother · 19/02/2019 11:22

I also WhatsApp photos to DH or family and friends if I see something interesting or funny. Would you find that odd?

Flyingfish2019 · 19/02/2019 11:24

@Headsdown... well, tbh I actually hate it and told him several times not too, but he continued... so I wonder if it is because:

  1. He might feel stressed, nervous, anxious and needs it. In that case it was okay and i ha to live with it
  2. It is because he is normal and I am not. In that case I had to live with it
  3. He is being a bit disrespectful of my wishes

Does anyone think we might have AdBot Trolls these days? Who post weird threads just to get the ad banners up?

Between this bizarre thread and the batshit engagement ring thread I’ve been flooded with McDonald’s and shiny jewellery ads.

And now I want McDonald’s and shiny jewellery.

Flyingfish2019 · 19/02/2019 11:25

@glamorousgrandmother Do you Call them to tell them you have whatsaaped them a photo after that?

Think you could be on to something ScrumpyCrack

glamorousgrandmother · 19/02/2019 11:29

No the WhatsApp photos and comment would stand alone. Tbh I prefer texting or other kind of messaging to actually talking but I do communicate with people frequently using my phone.

Flyingfish2019 · 19/02/2019 11:29

No, no, I am a dm journalist wanting to write an article about this. Troll hunting here is really a bit over the top.

I understand you op. I don't understand pointless phone calls.
DH rings at dinner time everyday because he's in the car bored and then gets annoyed because I put him on speaker phone or don't answer.
My in laws are the same. They'll come to visit us then randomly ring SIL/BIL or take a call from them mid conversation.
Completely pointless calls about a carpet being delivered, DN ate a grape, ASDA had no blue milk, we're on the way to blah','we've just stopped at services on the way to blah' we're stuck in traffic', 'we've just reached blah', 'we're coming home from blah, we'll call in when we're back'.
Then there's the constant what's apps, it's cold, it's hot, DN is here, DN is there, new socks, it's snowing, DN in the snow/sun/rain, first haircut, fifth haircut, DN with PIL DN with DN...These are people who visit each other every day they can just speak to each other in person.

AlaskanOilBaron · 19/02/2019 11:30

My husband and I speak quite a lot during the day, this would be normal for us.

Also, both of us would be upset if the other went to MdDs and didn't offer to fetch some for the other! Obvs.

I've got Eurostar and some comedically expensive tea (£20 for 100 g which is probably a few teabags worth).

Whycantistaymotivated · 19/02/2019 11:31

OH does this. A lot. He gets bored if by himself/doesn't have anyone to talk to so if I'm available to talk he will call me. Bit annoying if I'm just sitting down to watch something (very rare quiet moment) I'll chat for a few mins but will say I'm just about to....blah blah and say I'll speak to him later. No issue.

He just likes to talk

glamorousgrandmother · 19/02/2019 11:32

I had an advert in Polish a minute ago. I'm not Polish although I do have Polish friends on Facebook.

Flyingfish2019 · 19/02/2019 11:33

@Notso I am so happy somebody gets me. Exactly that kind of calls, like “I am in front of ... and going in“, “I am driving to ... call you when I am there“... why no just calls me ONCE like when you are there?

OP posts:
M4J4 · 19/02/2019 11:42

I get you too OP. 4 or 5 times a day would annoy me.

U think you just need to answer the phone a lot less, maybe twice a day to start with. Would you prefer him to text you?

CoolJule43 · 19/02/2019 11:45

Hi OP,
Another one here who has no comprehension of why so many people make such inane calls and constantly call and text family.

What the heck do people have to talk about when they are at home together if they have called each other so many times during the day?

I wouldn't dream of contacting DH during g the day unless an emergency as he should be working. Maybe this contributes to lower production in this country?

On the one hand I feel mobile phones are good because they increase communication but OTOH is it communication when it is so trivial?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 19/02/2019 11:47

Even odder that you start a bonkers thread about it.

MrsChollySawcutt · 19/02/2019 11:48

You have answered your own question - he asked you if you or the kids wanted anything as he was going in.

I think that's called being considerate and not normally seen as anything negative..

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 19/02/2019 11:52

The oddest thing about this thread is calling it a cell phone. Who does that in the UK? Confused

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/02/2019 11:54

Judging by the people on my train he is completely normal. They all call their partner/mum to discuss what station they're at, and what biscuit they had at work. Then at the end of the call they say "see you in 5 minutes then" and I just think...did that call really need to be made?

I think some people see their free call minutes as a challenge to be met.
