To think that Martina Navratilova should NOT lose her job at the BBC and that the BBC is biased?

TeamNavratilova · 18/02/2019 23:00

On Sunday, Martina Navratilova had an article published in the Sunday Times, giving her views on the inclusion of transwomen (biological males who identify as being women) in women’s sport:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-rules-on-trans-athletes-reward-cheats-and-punish-the-innocent-klsrq6h3x?shareToken=45bc9997e063aaf79646a7f12a7363a6

The BBC subsequently decided to have a discussion item on this on 5 Live and invited Dr Nicola Williams from Fair Play for Women - fairplayforwomen.com - to speak on Martina’s side of the argument along with Rachel McKinnon (a male-bodied cyclist who identifies as a woman and now holds a cycling world title in women’s cycling).

Rachel McKinnon refused to appear on the show if Dr Williams was on so the BBC’s response was to uninvite Dr Williams and instead interview Rachel McKinnon along with another trans sportsperson who agreed with Rachel. The other side of the argument (along with all facts about the physical differences between male and female bodies which Dr Williams could have provided) was not covered and both interviewees were asked (on the BBC, by a BBC presenter) whether the BBC should fire Martina to which they both replied yes: twitter.com/fairplaywomen/status/1097417280084951040 McKinnon has continued to argue for this online.

AIBU to think that Martina should not lose her commentating job at the BBC for expressing her (considered, researched) views and that the BBC has behaved in a biased and unethical way, firstly, by only presenting one side of an argument on a discussion show and, secondly, by using the opportunity to put forward the idea that Martina should be sacked?

Beginning to think its a relief that ds1 dd and ds2 didn't want to take sociology at A level

OunceOfFlounce · 19/02/2019 10:05

I still love the BBC but its biases are familiar to many people who aren't white or middle class. Ethnic minorities and working class people often find themselves marginalised or ignored, I guess because most of the people in charge are white and middle class.

I will be really interested to see how things change now it's pissing off a substantial amount of women, from all classes and races. I hope, this time, those speaking out will get heard.

Madhairday · 19/02/2019 10:05

I've complained. I can hardly believe this was permitted with no challenge against the arguments the trans guests made. Trust the BBC less and less.

Well, the ‘visiting’ Professor of Shitology at Aston, spent many years teaching Culture, Media and Sport.

Actually I don’t feel comfortable calling it Shitology, because I have studied sociology and it is (was) a bloody brilliant subject, dealing with so much that affects women’s lives.

I want to go into every uni Sociology department, and tear down the layers of misogyny that now exist.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 10:29

And by the BBC.

People are very quick to forget things, this isn't new or shocking, the BBC covered up a peadophile ring for 30 years, they have to monopoly and power to restrict news and influence public opinion.
They've never been a nice corporation.

MissionItsPossible · 19/02/2019 10:55

Team Martina.
As per usual other sites aren't allowing comments or deleting (not just closing) threads about the subject when the posters are generally supporting Martina...

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 19/02/2019 11:52

I've complained to the BBC.

It reminds me of the time they had 2 middle aged males discussing why women were complaining about being called womxn.

Amazing to see this happening in 2019

2019StandingforWomen · 19/02/2019 11:59

Yes, why do we always have to have males discussing whether or not we should allow males into our facilities, to compete with us in sports etc.

Why can't women have agency to organise their own lives?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 19/02/2019 12:08

Yanbu

Whilst I don’t ascribe to some
Of the views held here the sports issue fucks me off majorly and massively

Can actually see why people get worried

BBC are dicks if they do this

AryaStarkWolf · 19/02/2019 12:13

They're seriously thinking about firing her for saying that its unfair to biological women to compete against biological men? This is like the Twilight Zone

2019StandingforWomen · 19/02/2019 12:16

Isn't it? Madness.

I think it is awful - she is so honest and fair and she has investigated fully and knows it would be a complete disaster to women's sports if allowed to continue.

And all the media slant from the left wing side is "TRANSPHOBIA"!!!!!

donquixotedelamancha · 19/02/2019 12:20

No. They aren't. The issue is that Butlerian Jihadis have called for her sacking, a colleague has publicly implied she should be sacked and the BBC have form for disciplining women who discuss this issue.

I think Martina is a different case. I'm not sure the BBC are stupid enough to publicly rebuke her for having an oppinion about women's sports.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 19/02/2019 12:23

I would not underestimate the BBC's stupidity. As pointed out earlier, they defended Jimmy Savile and his paedophile activities for years. Plus, they have form for throwing women under a bus. (See Jenni Murray.)

So long as they can continue to suck at the public tit with impunity they will continue to be woke social justice warriors.

(Thanks all the gods that I don't have a telly and haven't had one for years so not a penny of my money goes towards a licence to support that cesspit.)

unitoast · 19/02/2019 12:25

Remember when John McEnroe said that Serena Williams would be ranked about 700 in men's tennis, even though he acknowledged her as the best women's player ever? He got a lot of shit for that at the time, but his comments were based on biology.

Good but it's a sad state of affairs that she's only safe because of who she is and not because what she's saying makes perfect sense

This, in spades.

When the fuck is this madness going to stop?
Women being erased from public life - same shit, different means.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/02/2019 12:39

Butlerian Jihadis

Grin
DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 19/02/2019 12:39

Why can't women have agency to organise their own lives?

Because we are women and men always come first.

Does anyone else remember years ago a conference held by the UN on breastfeeding where all the delegates were men?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/02/2019 12:41

I DO!!!!, Disrespectful

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 19/02/2019 12:45

Glad I'm not the only one, Schadenfreude.

walchesterweasel · 19/02/2019 13:12

What time was the broadcast ?

donquixotedelamancha · 19/02/2019 13:16

I should point out that every time I think an organisation or person will show common sense or basic decency I get proved wrong. I would not consider myself to be a reliable prognosticator.

Still I just can't see them wading into this so cack-handedly as to overtly sack her.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/02/2019 13:18

They are currently above the law, they can do what they like right now.

HotpotLawyer · 19/02/2019 13:22

What about a thread entitled
"AIBU to think that the BBC should sack Stephen Noland and his producer Philo Holland?" (for breaking guidelines on veto-ing, and crap biased interviewing:)
or
"AIBU to think that Martina should take her services to a more highly paid TV company?"
