To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 20:35

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

@Boom45 thank you for understanding. I will have a sling with me too so worst case I could follow suit and not take a pram at all- it'll depend on the airline response probably.
I have tried to get my DH to agree to ear piercings if we have a Dd but he is not budging at all! I still find it weird not seeing babies with pierced ears hereGrin

@SenoraSurf you realise the money you have spent on a few carriers to try could have probably paid for a stroller...

Lululemonade · 18/02/2019 22:42

We were living overseas and my dd would only nap would in the carrycot so we had a bugaboo travel bag (bought second hand). The bag was enormous and well padded and I filled it up with nappies, play mat for the floor etc etc and were were lucky that it was all ok. As soon as she was a bit bigger we got a yoyo for travelling which I still use now as it is so good.

ILoveBray · 18/02/2019 22:51

I think the baggage handlers will probably treat it as a bit of a challenge. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a mangled lump of metal back, based on what I've seen of the way they treat baggage.

When I fly I only take items I can afford to replace, and it sounds like you don't have enough money to buy a new one.

I'll keep an eye out for your next thread 'AIBU to sue airline for wrecked £1000 pram?' Grin

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 22:53

@Lazypuppy it's not the money Confused, if I wanted a second one I could go out and buy one I've already said I acknowledge I am fortunate enough to be in the position to do this. I cannot justify spending again as it's not necessary when I could just pay to have my one checked in (properly protected). Its not worth spending the money it would cost for a second stroller that I would like enough to use for the sake of 1 trip (as I previously mentioned we generally drive but on this occasion are flying as the trip would be too long with dc so young and my sister is not driving out on this occasion either).

OP is your sister travelling this time - can she take the pram in her car?

anonymouse · 18/02/2019 22:56

Friend of mine highly recommends the Stokke pram pack. Said it fit her bugaboo and sleepyhead plus other small bits.

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 22:56

@DownRightAmazing unfortunately not, we're going during my mat leave (not in school holidays) and her children are now school aged. This would never normally be an issue as me and DH work in term time jobs too so can also only go in holidays (excluding mat leave Grin).

@anonymouse I have just googled and it have fantastic features! Will be doing some research on that, thank you!

I took a bugaboo and carrycot for my 5 week old on a flight in a bugaboo carry bag 10 years ago and everything that the bag didn’t cover was trashed.

I took a boxed car seat with easy jet last year and checked it in (pushing my cheap lie flat pushchair) and the airline treated it as a free piece of baby allowance/equipment and didn’t charge me to check it into the hold.

BlitheringIdiots · 18/02/2019 23:00

£1k on a pram? Blimey

BoringPerson · 18/02/2019 23:02

Not sure why the OP is getting roasted over having a fancy pram. If she can afford it and if she loves it then why shouldn’t she enjoy using it. I’m also not sure why people are annoyed by the OP saying she has worked hard for her money. She was just talking about herself, she wasn’t commenting on whether or not other people work hard for their money 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fancy prams were never my thing but it’s not exactly an unusual thing for people to enjoy.

I took DS abroad when he was 8 months old, I took his MacLaren buggy as we were flying with Ryan Air, we were allowed to keep DS in his buggy until we got to the steps of the plane & got it back on the carousel at baggage reclaim. There is no way I would have taken my expensive big travel system on a flight. DS was perfectly happy in his buggy during our stay, I put a cosy toes on the buggy to make it more comfortable, it laid practically flat & he slept comfortably in it when we went out during the early evening before we returned to our apartment & put him to bed in the travel cot provided by the owner. I took a travel cot separate mattress & travel cot bedding with us & his own blankets.

BlitheringIdiots · 18/02/2019 23:03

We had a lie flat mclaren stroller for things like this. Was £35 new. It was so great to fold it up and sling in airplane hold/car boot/train etc. You are being a bit vain about not getting a second pram you 'don't really like'. It's a pram. Purpose of pushing baby round. Not a fashion shoot

BlitheringIdiots · 18/02/2019 23:04

And we fitted a fold up travel cot in suitcase as well as a portable stair gate for one holiday.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 18/02/2019 23:04

We bought a maclaren techno xt. It comes with a massive uv hood and it lays flat.
I bought a sheepskin to go in it and our 9 week old had a lovely time in it in Greece.
We also bought a pushchair bag to keep it safe.
We bought it 6 years ago and it has survived 5 years worth of flying.

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 23:04

@BoringPerson amen. Thank you!

Op what route do you take when you drive? You can sail in to Bilbao / Santander ... that cuts it down

BikeRunSki · 18/02/2019 23:16

Leave the baby at home.
Buy the pram it’s own seat. I’m sure your family in Spain are dying to meet it.

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 23:19

@BloodyBosch we do that in the bad winters to avoid the mountain roads but we still have a 9 hour journey across Spain on the other side unfortunately

This looks perfect ,!

BloodyBosch · 18/02/2019 23:23

@senorasurf I think I still prefer that to flying! We do the same sort of distance but usually break it up with a hotel half way down.

Growuppeople · 18/02/2019 23:24

It’s a pram, maybe get a cheaper one for travelling (btw the egg is ugly)

Actually crying tears of laughter at this GrinGrinGrin

Thequaffle · 18/02/2019 23:27

OP it’s up to you if you want to take your nice buggy. Will the packaging you want to use protect it from being damaged when it’s thrown around? How about when big luggage’s are thrown on top of it?

If I were you I would get a cheaper one or take a sling. The package might protect it from scratches but not impact damage. The baggage handlers do not handle with care!
