To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 20:35

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

Are you gonna box up the Supersoaker or take it as carry on?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 18/02/2019 21:40

You’ll be hard pushed to package a bassinet and the chassis in such a way that the pram will be adequately protected, but small enough that the airline will still accept it in the hold.

For example, the EasyJet restrictions-

Each passenger that pays to check a bag can bring a maximum of 20 kg with dimensions up to 275 cm (length + width + height)

You might need a rethink here.

BoringPerson · 18/02/2019 21:41

We were expats when our four kids were small and we did a lot of air travel. I'd second all the posters who are saying that the pushchair might get trashed. I soon learnt after getting two pushchairs/prams trashed. (I did get the cost refunded by the airlines each time though. 👍🏻👍🏻)

Otherwise I think it's an idea to parcel up the pram and consider paying extra for it if needed.

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 21:41

@WhatTheNightBrings trust me, if there was an alternative airline that flew out of an airport near my home in UK, I would not be flying easyJet! Alas, an additional 3 hours onto my already 2 hour drive wouldn't be logical.

For what it's worth, going commando is wonderful... fur coats not so much Grin

There are some people focusing on the vanity aspect solely.
Yes... you.
I am not well off enough to purchase a second stroller that I like enough to leave there and would rather not buy a cheaper one/second hand one simply due to personal preference.
Prioritising style vanity over practically.

Oh and lots of people have said there would be a charge for boxing the pram, if they would even let you. You really need to contact your chosen airline considering they all have different policies.

bluetheskyis · 18/02/2019 21:42

I’d also say it’s worth the money ( 2nd hand there are tons available) of getting a travel cot and stroller to leave at the GPs along with other bits and bobs. You’ll use them.

PuntasticUsername · 18/02/2019 21:42

"I admit I like nice things and am fortunate than I can work hard enough to buy the things I like hmm each to there own"

OP, you said you were Spanish so perhaps it's a second language thing, but this is a shitty thing to say on a forum full of people who all work just as hard as you do - or harder - but will never have that kind of money to spend on a pram.

You could of course charter your own private jet to take you? Perhaps Kate or Meghan will loan you theirs??

You can get strollers that go in carry on bags so they fit in the hold compartment and therefore considered carry on item. Maybe that is an option. I have a famildoo but not sure if it's suitable from birth but there must be others like it that are?

I have never heard of anyone boxing up a pram apart from those people that live in Beverly hills and fly first class

Killerqueen2244 · 18/02/2019 21:45

Hang on, you’ve paid a grand for a pram but won’t pay £30 for a second hand one off eBay/Facebook.....but will pay for the cost of having extra luggage (your packed up pram) with you?!!

Fuuuuuuuuuuuckin’ hell you need to give your head a wobble don’t you?!

Glitterbugle · 18/02/2019 21:45

We bought a travel bag and filled it with lots and lots of bubble wrap to protect the buggy. Everyone else just chucked there’s in but we had the Bugaboo (when she was tiny) and wanted to use it.

As soon as she was old enough we bought a McClaren Techno

Medicaltextbook · 18/02/2019 21:45

I have no children but I can read and see all the experience here.

You will have a baby to show off, never mind a push chair. If your friends or family are so shallow they will judge you more fool them. If you want to be vain with a potentially scratched or broken expensive product go ahead.

Purpleartichoke · 18/02/2019 21:46

I have checked a large box. The fee is shockingly high. It will be cheaper to buy a travel pram, even without having to pay the fee twice for the return.

Notasunnybunny · 18/02/2019 21:48

I have no experience of the egg, ours is buggaboo and the bag is deffinately enough protection, the buggy gets completely dismantled, wheels off etc. It all fits very snuggly. Have a look on you tube for instruction videos. It might help you decide. I wouldn’t send it down unpacked. I can understand wanting to take your ‘best’ buggie. Dd felt safe in hers and on holiday it gets used as a stand in travel cot, when she was very little she didn’t even sleep in the hotel cots, I just used the buggie as a Moses basket,

LittleRen · 18/02/2019 21:49

You’re being a bit precious. I have taken numberous expensive pushchairs on flights - if you are checking it then buy a flight bag. Personally I recommend taking it to the gate, it’s hardly going to be damaged then.

I took a bugaboo to New York and also to Rhodes... checked in a flight bag (amazon) and they were fine. Unless it’s a flimsy little thing it’s unlikely to be damaged... my god my bugaboo gets more abuse on a daily basis from my 3 year old hanging off it than it did being checked into a hold.

It will be fine.

itsbritneybiatches · 18/02/2019 21:49

Love a good OP "am I unreasonable?"

Everyone on the thread "yes"
OP "I'm not I'm not"

Your prom will get trashed. It will prob cost you more to transport each way than to just buy a cheap one from Argos.

TheVanguardSix · 18/02/2019 21:50

Bubble wrap it and shove it in a travel bag. Bish bash bosh.

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 21:50

@Glitterbugle thank you, padding the travel bag is an option I hadn't considered. I will definitely look into this further Smile

llangennith · 18/02/2019 21:51

Airlines will take a buggy for free (goodwill) but not if it's packed up. You'll have to pay the cost of excess baggage if you pack your buggy.

Buy a cheap secondhand one.

LittleRen · 18/02/2019 21:51

And seems like I am in the minority with having no damaged buggy... I have checked them on Lufthansa, BA, Ryanair and Thomas cook!!!

MidniteScribbler · 18/02/2019 21:51

First baby I'm guessing.

Here's a tip for you OP. No one, and I genuinely mean NO ONE, gives a shit about what sort of pram you are pushing your kid around in.

BeBaBoBa · 18/02/2019 21:51

We travelled a lot from when DD was tiny. I can’t fault the Mothercare Nanu. It’s suitable from birth and about £50. It lays flat and DD slept fine in it. I too have a fancy-pants pram for day to day use but I’m also not an idiot. I’ve seen bagage handlers kick prams down chutes onto the tarmac and want my nice pram to stay nice!

GorkyMcPorky · 18/02/2019 21:52

Just take the pram OP. Box it up and pay the extra if you want. Who cares? Just don't come whinging on here when if it gets damaged.

Oh and I worked plenty hard enough before I had my DC (still do). Judge all you like about these feckless lazy parents who can only afford second hand prams Hmm

Soontobe60 · 18/02/2019 21:54

I'm actually amazed that you're focussed on showing off your very expensive pram and yet you chose to fly with a budget airline. What will the rellies in Spain think of you?

TheLette · 18/02/2019 21:55

If you want a nice looking travel pram and not a cheap looking one, get a Babyzen Yo-yo. Looks slick, nice to drive and handy for other purposes too (like nursery and car journeys).

I agree with other posters - don't take your nice buggy on the plane.

Actually, the reason we have the Yoyo is that our original travel buggy (a perfectly good Silver Cross umbrella type buggy) got destroyed by an airline (Iberia, in fact) so we got the Yoyo instead. It folds up small enough that it can be taken on as hand luggage. A great piece of kit - we use it much more regularly than we expected.
