To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 20:35

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

Pram snobbery...heard it all now...same as designer snobbery...all fur and no knickers brigade.....Confused

TheDarkPassenger · 06/08/2019 09:10

I know this is a zombie but I was sincerely hoping it was gunna be one of those threads where the op replies to herself saying ‘don’t do it I took my egg (??) on holiday in feb and it got smashed up.. buy a cheap stroller’

VenusTiger · 06/08/2019 09:28

Cheap pram. Chances are, it’ll get wrecked on beach or rubbly paths anyway.

leasedaudi · 06/08/2019 10:03

I've also been wondering whether the egg is ready to travel 🤔

Glad it's not just me - I have just googled to find this thread.

Sling. The easiest and most comfortable, and comforting option for you and the baby. I was surprised just how convenient the sling was and it made everyday life in all weathers just so easy. We also conslept, another unexpected option that felt natural to us.

So disappointed the OP hasn't

WishingILivedOnAnIsland · 10/08/2019 14:14

Oops hit post too soon.

*disappointed that OP hasn't returned to tell us how it worked out!

Ex husbands family have holiday house in Spain, went many many times over the 12 years we were together. Had a Maclaren and a Mamas and Papas buggy trashed by airlines in that time. The M&P one so badly (bent frame) I was unable to open it at all once we got there...
I'd buy something you dont care about and take that...

Whymustyoubringinthebirds · 10/08/2019 14:22

Gutted this wasn't an update from the OP!

I took a Stokke Xplory to St Lucia in 2007 in a travel bag. Got out there fine, but broken on way home Stokke repaired for free. Airline compensated me for loss of use, which I never would have believed. But was a nice airline. And it was the one off holiday of a lifetime paid for with an inheritance that was for 'a treat' not essentials. Im not in the habit of flying to the Caribbean! I took it because of the way it could be used as a high chair, and also an impromptu bed for DS who was just only 1 at the time.

A couple of years later my daughter got a trip to the US through a sick children's charity and as her brother still needed a pram and I was travelling as a single parent I didnt take the Stokke again, I searched for a robust but still very user friendly buggy (think was a quinny buzz) that I then bought 2nd hand on ebay.

Gutted that I got to nearly the end before realising it was a Zombie thread. Angry
Really don’t see the OP coming back to this one. Grin

I even googled Egg prams and was most amused by the fact that,

The Eggstroller has been designed in the UK with the style conscious parent in mind.

Not with the baby in mind Hmm

Update:
DS is now 6 weeks old and has had a fab first trip to Spain. I ended up buying another egg pram to take to Spain and have left it there for future use (with my DS, any future children and potential nieces/nephews). Personally, it was worth it for me to fork out the extra money to buy another one and the bonus was I got to buy another colour so have black diamond for England and country green for Spain Grin

I didn't box it up, in fact, I didn't put anything on it (I forgot the clear plastic bags and tape that I was going to take to cover the carrycot in case it got wet). I took it to the steps of the plane, DH collapsed it and put it on the luggage trailer and then we received it on the carousel at the other end. The car seat we put through at check in as the plane was delayed an hour so saved lugging it round the airport. The key part here is IT DIDN'T GET DAMAGED AT ALL! Yippee! Thanks easyJet Wink

Some comments on here from some users were really patronising and nasty, particularly as a first time mum seeking advice/experience. I unfollowed the thread after my previous comment.

To those who were being particularly catty, for what it's worth, DS is an absolute dream. He's ebf, sleeps 8 hours a night with one feed usually about 4/5am. I've only eaten my meal cold on 2 occasions as DS seems pretty happy chilling in his pram or bouncer whilst I eat (due to strategically timed feeds before my food is ready or arrives at a restaurant). He was an angel on the plane, he slept most of the journey.

In a nutshell, we took a risk with the pram on the plane and got lucky and I'm glad I didn't have to use a pram I didn't like.

6 weeks, eh OP? Wow, you've really nailed being a parent for a month and a half Hmm

SenoraSurf · 22/09/2019 17:38

@Cuppa12345 even if I posted this in 30 years time, the likes of you would moan that I hadn't been parenting long enough... can't please them all.

I hope you got a lot of admiring comments on your pram, OP - you went to a lot of effort and expense to get a few passing 'oh, that's a nice pram's!

mum2jakie · 22/09/2019 17:41

Great update! Glad it all worked out for you and congratulations on your little boy too. Hope he continues to be chilled for you.

sepsisandAKI · 22/09/2019 17:43

That update has to be a wind up Confused

LisaSimpsonsbff · 22/09/2019 17:44

Great that you were able to leave it there so your family is able to make lots of precious memory with their grandpram

moggymorn · 22/09/2019 17:46

Just me who thinks egg prams are hideous? Grin

Cuppa12345 · 22/09/2019 17:59

Regardless of whether that's true or not, 6 weeks is extremely early to be quite so smug about having parenting s:orted, don't you think?
