To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

In your situation I'd get a Babyzen Yoyo. A lovely small pushchair that can usually be taken on the plane with you as hand luggage and will be handy to save on space when travelling by car in the future. As they get older it is handy to have a smaller pram when you can't be bothered with the big bulky one.

Honestly I wouldn’t risk it, my beautiful bugaboo got absolutely trashed when I took it to Hong Kong in it’s padded travel bag 😑 literally it was bent and all sorts.

Buy a buggy that lies flat you honestly won’t regret it.

I had a big clumpy pram- bought a McLaren Techno to travel with, between Australia and UK.
4 month old slept so well in it that we never went back to using the big pram.
McLaren survived maybe 20 long haul trips being thrown in the hold with no damage, before both kids were too big for it. Best baby item we ever bought.
Comfort was so much more important than style, but I guess style is so much more to consider.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 19/02/2019 02:19

Is your baby a bit, erm, unfortunate looking? (As my dear old neighbour used to say) because why would anyone be looking at your prom?

Greyhound22 · 19/02/2019 02:34

Why do people come on here to ask a question and then not like the answer?

If you take the expensive pram it is possible it will be damaged. You can't box it you have to put it in a bag. Most people buy a cheap one to take on flights.

Also - the only people that know anything about prams are those that have given birth within the last six months as they've been looking at them. No one else in the world can tell the difference between a £50 and a 1K one.

Greyhound22 · 19/02/2019 02:38

Oh and before I get the jealousy thing thrown at me I could afford a 1K pram no problem but managed to hold on to some of my common sense through becoming a parent.

JennyWoodentop · 19/02/2019 02:38

I am not the only person who has had a stroller broken by rough handling at the airport surely?

I have looked out of the windows & seen them dropped from a great height more than once.

I bought a cheap one for travel thereafter as so many people have advised.

Oysterbabe · 19/02/2019 04:57

I see your baby isn't due until August. If you go to 42 weeks, will your baby be 3 weeks old when you travel? Not related but I think you're crazy to travel then, I couldn't think of anything worse. Even getting to the airport would be a faff as the baby can only be in a car seat for 30 minutes.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 19/02/2019 05:23

It’s not even born yet! And she’s stressing over the pram?! Is it actually a reborn doll?

MutantDisco · 19/02/2019 05:30

Neither of mine were in a buggy, at all. I used slings for the first year at least.

Booboostwo · 19/02/2019 05:54

Easyjet are almost certain to expect you to pay for the packaged buggy as a separate item and it will almost certainly be classed as excess size luggage (dimensions available on their website) which is more expensive. When you get to the airport you will need to queue to drop off regular bags and then go to the excess size bag drop off and queue again for the buggy.

Mendingfences · 19/02/2019 05:56

The Stokke prampack is good. But not entirely baggage handler proof (I doubt anything is tbh). It is also a better fit for some prams than others. I have stuck a fairly expensive double pram in the hold in a prampack and it survived but theres an element of luck to it.

lboogy · 19/02/2019 06:00

If you're so vain, then why fly easy jet? Why not fly with a more expensive airline. You know, so it's in keeping with your image 🙄

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 19/02/2019 06:16

What everyone else said. One of my uncles was a baggage handler at Heathrow, he hated prams! And never mind the chances of it getting damaged (very high), I had a pram left at the airport steps once, and they left it behind on the tarmac! It took them four days to get it to me, I had to buy a stroller in the meantime. I'd have been gutted if it was a flash one!

savageswimmer · 19/02/2019 06:21

This is probably one of those pfb things that you will look back on in 5 years and cringe at for being so sillyGrin

oneyearnobeer · 19/02/2019 06:26

We bought a maclaren techno xt. It comes with a massive uv hood and it lays flat.

Yeah- I had that for DC2 after I learned with DC1 that a Bugaboo is a massive PITA. Mine are way past that now but the Techno still lives on after I gave to my friend and it has survived probably 30+ international flights to date. A prince amongst pushchairs! Grin

TakeMe2Insanity · 19/02/2019 06:26

We always used a sling at the airport and took our bugaboo packed in a travel bag. On one particular occasion we had 1 hour to transit to our next plane and our luggage was left behind. It arrived the next day, however our pram was utterly squashed and jammed despite the padding in the travel bag. After that we bought a travel pram. Lesson learned.

Monestasi · 19/02/2019 07:26

I really don't get the expensive pram yet fly EJ comments.

Raven88 · 19/02/2019 07:31

You could pack it and put it in the hold but you would have to pay for an additional bag if it was extra. As far as I know the shape of the luggage doesn't matter and I I think it's 40 online and 50 at the gate If it's up to 23kg for every 3 kg over it's £12 also it would have to be under 32kg to go in the hold. I get why you don't want to just put it in the hold unprotected.

donajimena · 19/02/2019 07:32

This thread has cracked me up. Congratulations on your pregnancy pram OPGrin

European12345 · 19/02/2019 07:37

Id buy something like this www.kiddies-kingdom.com/bedding-essentials/33779-egg-travel-bag-black.html

I’ve got one for my 10m baby as we travel loads. One of the last times easyjet broke the zip and that meant we couldn’t use the bag anymore. Complained and we’ve got a brand new one.

European12345 · 19/02/2019 07:43

Should have said I don’t have one of those but an original branded bugaboo one for my bugaboo. I normally go through security with it and hand in by the plane and collect it at the belt.

Pippa12 · 19/02/2019 07:45

I took my buggy on with jet2, they took the wheels off it for some reason and lost them!
So that option isn’t fool proof either Grin

I don’t blame you for not wanting to take a buggy for your 5 week old baby, I’d want my ‘big pram’ too. Not sure why you are getting a roasting for this, Lots of people spend extortionate amounts on prams. I did for both my children, loved a good pram! Don’t regret it at all. Worth every single penny.

How will you get the pram to the airport when it’s boxed up with all your luggage etc?

I wonder how much it will cost!?

Have a lovely time introducing your new baby to your family!

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 19/02/2019 07:55

Even if you intend to drive in the future I still think it would be worth buying something to leave in Spain. The amount of crap you have to take away when you have kids means you'd probably be grateful for the extra boot space! And by the time you have spent money on travel cases, packing,
materials, excesss baggage on two flights etc you probably wouldn't have to top it up much to get a fancy buggy in Spain to show off your baby in. (Btw- in 5 years when you are onto DC 3 you are going to look back on this and laugh that you cared about this Grin)
