The people of Swindon: do they regret voting for Brexit?

With the closure of Honda - closing their Swindon plant, with the loss of 3,500 jobs, which the firm has attributed to Brexit, I wonder if the people of Swindon are having regrets since they were from the leave camp.

Reminds me of those who voted for Trump knowing his policies were targeted at them but felt they somehow were exempt. Like the Mexican man and his US wife voting for Trump then crying on the news he had been deported/couldn't get back in when he was out of the country.

I'm finding it really difficult sympathising with those who voted to leave by not looking at their own circumstances, but rather, other people. Majority of the people I have heard from who voted leave (from fb, and so on) they only cared about immigration. They thought leaving meant a 'clear up' taking hardly into account their own future and that of their children.

I'm sorry to the people in Swindon, but they did it to themselves.

And before people say "there wasn't enough information" there was enough to determine that we did not know what the 'deal' was.

I can't link article for Honda but it's everywhere on news sites.

*@MadgeMidgerson

I guess like all the Americans who misunderstood what trump was selling

Like fuck they did, they heard the dog whistle and thought our ship has come in!
I’m not quite as angry as you as I’m Black but was born in UK and suffered incredibly growing up in a racist small town.
I’m astounded by some of the idiots who voted leave.
I’ll never forget an interview the day after the vote with some expat pensioners in Spain who were asked by the journalist if they were now worried about pensions healthcare etc you could literally see the sudden reality of what they’d voted for hitting home🤦🏾‍♀️

Thanks for your hateful personal comments aimed at me @ContinuityError for purely talking about how many 100s of 1000s of people have lost their jobs over the years, so i don't know why these people think they're so special...

I hope you feel better for venting your spleen at me. Can't be easy to be so angry.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 18/02/2019 22:45

PMSL at @Ghanagirl

ContinuityError · 18/02/2019 22:50

@redandyellowandpinkandgreen99

I don’t need to vent any spleen - you’ve done a great job all by yourself - do hope it’s made you feel better. Hmm

You’re not the only ones to have been made redundant, it’s happened to us too.

We just don’t wish it upon others and take glee in it.

nauticant · 18/02/2019 22:50

This woman was interviewed on the radio and sounded more informed than just about anyone I've heard talking about this today:

@Caucasianchalkcircles
I’m sorry but that’s untrue lots of uneducated and unemployed people voted blaming the recent migration from Eastern Europe for taking their jobs.
Same thing that was said about those recruited from the colonies to rebuild post war Britain plus work in the nhs and London transport.

Gth1234 · 18/02/2019 23:04

Trades unionists and their leaders should realise they shoulder most of the blame for their atrocious work practices in the 50 and 60's

That's why we have no decent UK car industry, but most of our competitors nations do, and therefore they owe the UK less loyalty as a result.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 18/02/2019 23:04

@ContinuityError I am not taking 'glee' in anything. You can't just make stuff up to suit your (flimsy) argument.

I am merely saying that many people are made redundant constantly, but don't make such a hoo-har about it or act like they are are more important than others.

They just get on with it. These car plant people have been spoiled for decades with super high wages, and now they will have to come back down to earth and join the millions of others on minimum pay.

No GLEE here, just cold hard facts hunnie!

Ghanagirl · 18/02/2019 23:04

@redandyellowandpinkandgreen99
At what exactly?

Gth1234 · 18/02/2019 23:04

£I’m sorry but that’s untrue lots of uneducated and unemployed people voted blaming the recent migration from Eastern Europe for taking their jobs.

and its all true.

dreichuplands · 18/02/2019 23:04

As a country we should be aiming to have more people in decent paying jobs like the ones in Swindon, not pulling every job down to the lowest level possible.
I want to see more engineering jobs not more zero contract minimum wage ones. Why would anybody want differently?

Ghanagirl · 18/02/2019 23:06

@redandyellowandpinkandgreen99
So you’re angry then “PMSL”, have you been drinking?

ContinuityError · 18/02/2019 23:08

Welcome to the real world 'car plant' people.

Yeah, that sounds like glee to me.

HTH hun

Ghanagirl · 18/02/2019 23:09

@Gth1234
Sorry which parts true not being rude but can’t understand if you agree with me or think that hard working immigrants are the issue.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 18/02/2019 23:10

They just get on with it. These car plant people have been spoiled for decades with super high wages, and now they will have to come back down to earth and join the millions of others on minimum pay.

Your ignorance is truly astounding!

Gth1234 · 18/02/2019 23:12

You see, what you need to do is vote conservative, not labour.

Encourage low tax, not high tax, so the real wealth creators like dyson, and the chemical lad don't feel they have to move out to avoid punitive tax rates.

If making money is so easy, why don't the labour party run a few businesses, instead of complaining about those that do. Take the co-op. That's how labour run businesses, I shop there occasionally, but their offering is very poor compared to most supermarket chains that strive for profit in a competitive market.

PinkiOcelot · 18/02/2019 23:15

Wow there’s some horrible, nasty people on this thread. Go give yourselves a pat on the back.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 18/02/2019 23:15

Some people do not like the truth do they?

Nothing ignorant about posting facts These people WILL be coming down to earth soon, because very few jobs pay as well as they have been paid.

No need for personal attacks because you don't like what people say.

Skirmisher · 18/02/2019 23:17

'You see, what you need to do is vote conservative, not labour.

Encourage low tax, not high tax, so the real wealth creators like dyson, and the chemical lad don't feel they have to move out to avoid punitive tax rates.'

Oh haven't you heard? The Tories' new motto is 'Fuck Business'.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen99 · 18/02/2019 23:17

@Ghanagirl 😂😂😂

Ghanagirl · 18/02/2019 23:19

@Gth1234
I get it you think immigrants are the problem, I think unfortunately you’ll find out that Britain is reliant on them.

TheSwindonian · 18/02/2019 23:19

I am merely saying that many people are made redundant constantly, but don't make such a hoo-har about it or act like they are are more important than others.

Are they making a 'hoo-har' about it? Given that the Honda workforce were entirely unaware of the announcement until Sky news broke the story, and that very many of them were actually in work at the time, any reasonable person might conclude that any 'hoo-har' has been manufactured by news outlets and social media, shocked at the scale of the job losses and the lack of forewarning. But don't let facts get in the way of your (flimsy) argument.

ContinuityError · 18/02/2019 23:22

When people say unpleasant things about likely upcoming redundancies it should absolutely be called out.

I’m not sure what “truth” you’re trying to expose, other than skilled people earn a higher wage than the minimum wage for unskilled people?
